Better using Arduino or Esp32 board and use home wifi to make a communication. At least you pay for the wifi internet that also usable for everything else.

С подключением к интернету, через смартфон довольно большой функционал, но цена порядка 200$. Так что не стоит заниматься ерундой, тем более указанное "устройство" тоже стоит денег.
Суть в том что этот человек с техникой на ты и реально разбирается, а не просто магазинная потреблядь без увлечений и мозгов А указанное устройство за копейки собрано
