  • Let's start to make a mosaic! So you've broken up your tiles (no? See my other video) and mixed up your thin-set mortar (another video shows you how). Now you're ready to stick those tile pieces to the wall, or whatever mosaic surface you're using. I'll show you how in this short video.

    I'm doing a shower wall with broken glass pieces which is going on hardie backer. Do I need to put the thin set on the wall AND on each piece, or just on the piece and stick it straight to the cement backer? Thank you SO much, this was the most helpful video I've found so far!

    • @AllHandsArt
      @AllHandsArt  3 года назад +2

      Thanks for your kind words! I normally spread the thin-set onto the back of the piece, although some people spread it on the wall. I find I can control the amount better when I'm "buttering" the back of each piece. Good luck with your project!

    Well done. Can you tell me what thin set you used that can withstand freezing weather as well as what grout you used that can deal with freezing. Thank you,

    • @AllHandsArt
      @AllHandsArt  4 года назад +2

      I have to start with the disclaimer that I've done the majority of my work in California, where I didn't have to worry about temperatures. Having said that, most construction-grade thin-set mortars and grouts should stand up to freezing weather. (My mosaicked steps out by the sidewalk have done great through two Portland, OR winters so far. More of a concern is the type of tile (which I learned the hard way). Again, many building-grade tiles should work fine. Low-fire tiles, like the kind that kids make in school or that you might paint at a paint-your-own-pottery type of place will not withstand freezing temps. Tiles should be high-fire or at least medium-fire, meaning the clay was fired at a higher temperature which makes it more durable. Hope that helps! You might ask a local tile person to be sure about your location,

    Hi, thanks for your video. I hope your safe in these crazy COVID times x Very inspiring mosaic !! I am planning on attempting this in the uk.. do you know if the materials/methods you show appropriate for areas that have a lot of rain and freeze in winter ??

    • @AllHandsArt
      @AllHandsArt  3 года назад +2

      Oops, didn't see this question when you posted it. Yes, the methods and most materials (thin-set mortar and grout) can be used for rainy and cold weather. However, I recommend against using low-fire tile as the glazes can pop or chip off in freezing temperatures (as I've learned the hard way). Low-fire clays are what you used in elementary school art class, and some interior-grade manufactured tiles might be low-fire. If you're purchasing tiles you can either ask the manufacturer or assume that if they're intended for exterior use (esp. if sold in a cold climate), that they are high-fire and can hold up.

    • @markjacobson3036
      @markjacobson3036 4 года назад +3

      Wood is not the best surface for mosaic because it expands and contracts with moisture. However, if the mosaic will only be indoors and you seal the wood first, it can work.

    • @AllHandsArt
      @AllHandsArt  4 года назад +3

      Cinder block is a great surface for mosaic because it has "tooth" and yet is stable, i.e. it won't expand/contract with moisture. Carry on! :)

    Thanks so much for this video! Question: do you create some sort of rim along the top to keep the rain/water from getting behind the pieces? If so, what do you use?

    • @pamelaconsear89
      @pamelaconsear89 3 года назад +1

      Hi Jenny. No, I normally don't do anything special along the top other than make sure it's completely grouted on the upper outside edge of the tiles, about 1/4 or 1/2 inch (1-2 cm) beyond the tiles. If you were super worried you could maybe install flashing above it, but I'm not the best person to advise on that because I've never done it!

      Yeah, there are lots of sharp edges. I usually don't do this kind of mosaic work with kids under about 10 years old unless they are the super careful-responsible-calm type, or well supervised.

    Great video - thank you! Did you use thin set to attach the mirror pieces?

    • @pamelaconsear89
      @pamelaconsear89 3 года назад +2

      Thanks, Laurie. Great question. There is a special type of thin-set formulated for glass that I usually use for applying mirror. The brand I use is Custom, and it comes in 7 lb boxes at hardware stores for about $14. That's a lot more expensive than the normal thin-set I use, so I only use it for glass. I'm not usually super persnickety about materials (since most of my projects have been for schools with small budgets) but I have had issues with mirror pieces either popping off or sort of blackening over time, so I decided a while back that the extra care might be worth it.

      Hi Gina, I've been able to scrounge up tile discards from tile shops, contractor friends, and neighbors who've done kitchen or bath remodels. I have a video that shows how to break tile: ruclips.net/video/l4JeevaBZCA/видео.html . Also, in my online shop I sell mosaic-making kits that include broken tile: www.allhandsart.com/shop. I don't know anyplace else that sells broken tile, but I've got a good stash available!

      Check Habitat Restore for leftover tiles. check Salvation Army and other thrift stores. Check the clearance areas of the big box stores like Home Depot and Lowes as they will often have leftover boxes of tile at discount prices. You can then take care of breaking it yourself.

    How would you make a shell wall?

    • @AllHandsArt
      @AllHandsArt  4 года назад +1

      Hmm, I haven't done that myself. There IS a way to do mosaic in a one-step process: you mix up tile adhesive (I use equal parts adhesive and grout), spread it on your surface rather thickly, then press items like shells into it. On a wall, it would be important to make the mixture thick enough to not slip down, and at the same time to hold the shells in place.
