Breed chat and expectations

  • Abra has only been at the farm for 3 days now. Whilst the biting/snapping/nipping is persistent and expected … she’s a Maligator! … she is also showing us all her other typical breed qualities that make her the perfect dog for some serious jobs in the world. Just a day following her progress and you see why she is a magnificent dog with a person who knows what she needs. But in the hands of someone with little experience, like where she has come from, she can get herself into a lot of trouble. This is not a dig at people, it’s about knowing more about these dogs in our lives whatever breed or personality they may be and doing what’s best for them. Abra is giving us all a little insight into a breed that has been bred for a very specific purpose. Ignoring that and trying to make her fit as a square peg in a round hole, will never work. Dogs are living creatures and have so many varying and important needs. Abra is showing us some of hers.

I love how the other dogs are enjoying being involved last training Joey sat with her until Luke said free. This time Tilly went in room and stood in doorway with her until Luke said free. Then when she sat the right way and Luke praised her all the dogs ran up and surrounded her like they were happy with her. They are such wonderful dogs.

This comment is for the newer viewers or occasional viewer, as your regular viewers and subscribers understand this already having watched Luke and the pack for months, if not years. This video showcases Luke’s really rare expertise as a professional trainer. It’s unbelievable to see how cohesive and responsive this big pack is given their varied ages, backgrounds and breeds. Luke you are a maestro having made this look easy. But it wasn’t. Big work. Big knowledge. Big effort. This video is like watching a symphony. Bravo maestro!!!

Sam does her own kind of training, with those that really do need it. She has a mothers intuition and heart. I honestly do not think that both Faith and Hope would have opened up. Or for Hope to be where she is, without her first trusting Sam.
All the other pooches, The staffy sisters, Miss Red one day when Sam and Luke took all the doggo's to the beach. Sam was standing beside the bus getting ready to leave the farm. The dogs were all pouring in. I think miss Red went into the bus and quickly came back out and I think Miss Violet as well to sit near and wait for Sam. Shadow, the former Tassie Devil, after Luke took off all her sharp edges. Shadow is the most lovable little thing now.
All the dogs, the ones that have come from terrible existences and the ones that have conditions, I love to see them going to Sam, waiting for Sam, even Rosco boy protecting Sam sitting right on her feet or by putting himself between her and what ever else is getting on his Nerves. ha ha. Maggie, Tank, Chop chop, Barney boy, even Chancey boy. Remember when Chance would run back and forth between Luke and Sam when he was starting to get things right. Any way credit, when credits Due.

I developed so much respect for the Belgian Malinois learning about their military and police work. I know full well I could never own or train one as they really are unsuitable to be anything other than serious working dogs. So I never thought I would get to watch one be trained. Imagine my joy at realising Luke was taking on Abra. I knew they were bright and responsive and love to work...but watching her focus on Luke as a PUPPY is just amazing.
The biggest thing I noticed in the first video or two was just how much effort you were putting into her, and that is the best thing about watching Luke train her: I'm watching a master at work using all his skills.
I am so glad that Luke is enjoying training her. I feel like her of all people has earnt the right to train a dog like this, and to enjoy it.
Thank you Luke and Sam so very much for the opportunity to watch.

@Carnivore Amy I had a Shiba Inu...an abused rescue. Probably the most difficult dog I have ever owned. In all the 14 years I owned her, she never trusted people and no one she didn't know could touch her. She was a challenge. She was amazingly cat like, always clean, fastidious about herself, aloof, she liked affection but only on her terms. All the other dogs were wary of her, she would bite them if they overstepped her boundaries. I absolutely adored her and was devastated when she passed away at the age of 16. But I would not own another Shiba. Not anywhere near as challenging as a Malinois, but still, not for an inexperienced dog owner

We had a Malinois/German Shepherd mix that we took on at the age of 4 years from our daughter's friend . We loved him like crazy but he was a handful. So protective of me (using a cane). My husband was doing Agility with him; which he loved. However, if I was watching, as soon as he was off lead he would jump over fencing and charge 120 feet across the area to stand in front of me - between me and the strangers around. It got to the point that I couldn't go to watch, because the dog was focused on me and not what was going on with Agility. He died at 9 years after several cancer surgeries. We miss him.

Abra is an astounding dog, and it's so exciting to watch her grow. However, for me, Sam and Luke's greatest achievements will always be their preparedness to save the lives of dogs that nobody wants. It took almost a year of love, patience, and training to give Shadow, Rosco, YoYo, Hope, Faith, Freddo, Neveah, Molly, Luna, and Chance happiness. The Farm loves semi-blind, deaf, incontinent, neurologically impaired dogs without question. Nobody wanted Chop and Tank, but they now live the best lives. Joey, a failed sheep dog, escaped euthanasia and came to the Farm. Lily lives an amazing life even though her future is not certain. Miss Violet's ginormous achievements are because of Sam and Luke, elsewhere she would be euthanised.

BTW, Labradors, Collies, and GSH are also part of the team. They travel in their own seats on the plane next to their handler! I love all of your different breed of dogs but man do I love Belgian Malinois Shephards!!!
    And she's all Black too. ❤ 🌞 🌈

She was a challenge but understood who the top dog was, we had no issues but she did not socialize with my greyhounds & they wanted nothing to do with her. I found someone who knew about the breed & she lived out her life with her family & they said she was the BEST dog they ever had but I could not have let her go with just anyone

This is going to be an amazing adventure for all the Evans, 2 and 4 legged alike. She is absolutely amazing; diving after Luke 2 days in. 😳 That focus and intensity on learning is staggering. It’s like when Joey came but on hyperspeed. The long leans onto Luke’s back and eating the splashes “a la Jeddo” was hilarious. The Pie must show this new upstart who’s boss. 😂 I’m in love with Abra’s ears. The other doggies are such good boys and girls about this new stranger taking up some of Dad’s attention. They say “keep the Maligator’s teeth AWAY please and thank you!” I have watched you teach what feels like hundreds of doggies to swim and I am just in shock at how fast she’s taken to it and DOCK DIVING?!
