I am actually really relieved that you can play animenz pieces so well with your handsize. I am learning some animenz arr. with about the same handsize as you. Now i know the size wont really affect the piece. I am btw playing on a Yamaha C3.
Wow I'm so surprised (and also relieved) that you can't reach a 10th but are still able to play the most beautiful pieces!! Really appreciate the lesson, hope your channel will grow this way👌
i have pretty much identically sized hands as you, and have always been soo annoyed with the thought that id never be able to play those beautiful tenth harmonies in the left hand. It does however force us smaller hand pianists into practicing some neat work arounds for it haha. The amount of times Ive had to transpose the top note of some chords down, roll them, or do a much more difficult jump with my right hand to aid the left hand is insane. However, it hasnt exactly stopped me from playing any of animenz’s pieces, and evidently hasnt stopped your amazing playing either.
Great lesson, Richard. I never thought your hands were so small 😂 also I didn't know about the curled finger although I did figure it out myself but I needed some clarification 😊
When I do all the fast octaves and jumps, now you see how I have very small margin for error. Always dream of reaching 10th. It used to be because of Schumann, now it’s because of Animenz.
Thanks for a great video! I’ve found similar things as you. I have pretty much the exact same sized hands (and actually, the exact same piano) as you do, so it’s gratifying and encouraging to see you master Animenz arrangements. Glad I found your channel, you play beautifully!
@@RichardYangPiano I'm really impressed you've reached a point where octaves are comfortable. I can reach around 8 inches if I stretch my absolute max, but cant imagine octaves ever not having so tension
Hello Richard, I have listened to many of your Final Fantasy and Nier covers and your video gives me hope. I do also have small hands, I can only reach an octave at the edge of the keys, if I endeavour to do it in the middle of the keys, I hit adjacent notes. I do feel dismayed by them sometimes, but even with small hands you can play so beautifully and it emboldens me. I have heard people saying that your fingers should be curled, but I have always felt it was uncomfortable, but because I am an amateur with no teacher and it seems to be the general opinion, I have endeavoured to curl nonetheless. Hearing about your preference for flattening your fingers was very instructive to me. I do have some questions, after seeing that you do have small hands, I went to see again your "Omnis Lacrima" cover for I remember that there is a fast octave passage at 35 seconds and I wanted to see if you were at the edge of the keys. However, I think you do them in the middle of the keys, was it because you can have more power or/and have more speed? But I think my real question would be, for I can only reach at the edge of the keys, would you be able to have as much speed and power at the edge of the keys? Do you think stretching could help small hands and if you do, do you think it would be instructive to make a video about it? Thank you a lot for your video!
Hey Karin, that fast octave section is one of my favorites! This is a bit different, at that speed, I didn’t really have a choice, moving to the outer edge will increase response time. So happy someone listened to my Omnis Lacrima. Personally I don’t know if or how stretching your hand can help. If your reach for an octave is like me reaching 9th, that will unfortunately limit your playing. But you can comfortably do octaves on the edge, then you should be okay. But for sure playing big chords will be more difficult for you if you have to focus on the octave part. On curling the hand, it’s really not too big of a deal, just never to the “lazy hand” shape that I showed, that’s a no no. Anyway, happy practicing.
@@RichardYangPiano Thank you a lot for your reply! I hope that someday I could reach your speed but from the edge of the keys and that it will not increase the response time too much!
Yes, but not tremolos though. It’s a good practice to do 1-4 on black keys, but I only do it when absolutely necessary for speed. 1-5 works, I stick with 1-5 usually.
Any one surprised by my hand size?
My hands are very similar 😅
Me!
@@oliviayang9403 I wonder if your hands will one day outgrow mine.
Yeah, I could reach a tenth (got wide palms) but I couldn’t play octave very fast. So I thought you got fairly big hands.
@@FingersKungfu Mine is probably borderline-sized to play his stuff. Any smaller I don’t think would work, at least not this fast.

Bigger is still better though. Just gotta roll.

Now people know playing Animenz is actually much harder for me due to my lack of reach.

Thanks a lot eh, us small-hands.
People get those detail should pay for it. Right and clearly👍
I can barely reach 1 octave and can confirm that his arrangements (inc. most difficult ones) are playable with minor adjustments.
Hi Richard. You are an inspiration for small handed pianists. Could you measure your width reach with a ruler? It would be very helpful to know
Took me this long to find a ruler. Opening up my hands, about 7.5” outer edge.

你可以先聽一下我彈Fonzi改編的:ruclips.net/video/70GB45-smf4/видео.html
