Yay, a poetry collection! I used to write poetry when I was younger, and I have been wanting to getting back into it now that I'm older. Thanks for this video!
Dear Katie: I just stumbled upon your channel and was intrigued by it. I am an American poet and have published a fair amount of poetry, mostly in obscure periodicals. I also teach basic composition and creative writing at a community college. You strike me as an intelligent and perceptive reader, which is rather rare among your peers. You seem to actually like poetry, and don't look upon reading it as an odious task, something that must be "got through" in order to fulfill the requirements of a class. You appear to have invited poetry into your life, to such an extent that it has become a significant part of you. I have to say, Katie, that I concur with your opinion of R.H. Sin. You say, "The more I read his books, the more I started to get an off feeling, like he was telling you what you wanted to hear in order to sell books." You also go on to say that you believe there is a conscious attempt on his part to manipulate his audience, which, from what I understand, is predominantly female. This little poem of his exemplifies perfectly your statements: she has the mindset of a Queen and the heart of a warrior she is everything all at once and too much for anyone who doesn't deserve her she is you Talk about pandering to your audience! More importantly, though (and this really goes to the heart of the matter) a poem should not "tell" you anything. A true poet runs from didacticism like it was the plague (or, to update the simile: like it was corona). Do you know the poem "Ars Poetica" by Archibald MacLeish? It is, as its title suggests, a poem about the art of poetry. Here are some lines that illustrate the point I'm trying to make: A poem should be equal to: Not true. For all the history of grief An empty doorway and a maple leaf. For love The leaning grasses and two lights above the sea. A poem should not mean But be. Do you see how MacLeish's diction is as simple as Sin's, and yet he "tells" you nothing; he only alludes to something by employing concrete images? The images are themselves and something else at the same time, and that something else is left for the reader to imagine.
I’ve written 5 poetry books so far and been featured in several anthologies, but now I’m finding the more I write, the longer it takes me to write them. I’ve got Rapi Kaur’s three poetry books today. Poetry is one of my favourite subjects to study at school.
I’ve always loved poetry and was never allowed to read it in school by my English teachers so I never had the chance to read more books other than the ones in the beginning of this video and I was thinking of things that brought me happiness before I was in the dark place I’m currently in and poetry is something that really stuck out so I’m definitely going to check these books out and all these in the comments :)

I'm almost done reading Alicia Cook's "I Hope My Voice Doesn't Skip" and I would highly recommend it! In my opinion, it's even better then her "Stuff I've Been Feeling Lately".
Stuff ive been feeling lately is such a good poem book btw , it is interesting like she said. It was weird to see the same poem again but with words crossed out. but then it is interesting because it had a different meaning. I read it at my friends a few years ago and i loved it so much!
Richard Siken is hyped, but for very good reason imo. All of his stuff is longer free-form but absolutely gorgeous; pretty much any of his lines can stand powerfully on their own. I would highly, highly recommend it for anyone interested. (Also, he recently suffered a stroke and could greatly use the support, so please check him out and/or consider donating to his gofundme for care services!)
I felt the same way about The Chaos of Longing and the Amanda Lovelace books- though I will say that I picked up The Mermaid’s Voice Returns in This One and enjoyed it WAY more. I also really loved Her Volume 1 by Pierre Alex Jeanty. But one of my recent favorites was definitely YOURS! The first poetry collection that has made me cry. I also found it interesting because it reminded me of my own writing style and that was really cool to read❤️

I recently started reading r.h. sin and totally agree with all your points. His writing comes across as very pandering and bland. A lot of it feels holier than thou, too. It's like he's going "I respect women" which is great, but then he has an entire poem about how he's a better man for not cheating on a girlfriend. Like.... no? that is like the bare minimum in a relationship lol? Not to mention for a book CLEARLY aimed at younger, impressionable girls, there's a lot of virginity purity bullshit sprinkled in there. In one poem he literally says "honestly it upsets me you've been with other guys." which I think would be fine in other collections, but sprinkled alongside messages of empowerment, you're always great, some men don't deserve you, etc it comes across as really gross, honestly.
I don’t like Rupy or Amanda’s work that much, and have let that make me think I don’t like modern poetry even tho I occasionally find modern poetry that I enjoy. I’m super excited to give some of these a try.

Emily Brontë’s poetry is my favorite poetry I’ve ever read so far, it’s so deep and dark and beautiful, all of her poems feel so real and like genuine feelings, not just a bunch of pretty poems. Milk and honey is the worst poetry book I’ve read so far 😅
It’s really just about the reader. Some people understand and some others don’t really get it. But I recommend Emily Dickinson she’s amazing but a bit difficult to read. She should be at the library or books a million/Barnes & noble
i recommend a book called Touched With Fire by Kay Redfield Jamison. It contains a lot of classic poetry and got me into Byron, Shelley, Poe but also more modern authors such as Theodore Roethke and John Berryman
ouu imma pick up helium because I have had owned it for awhile. you're doing just fine is a book I was sent a while back and that I enjoyed as well. wild embers I really enjoyed! if your looking for more modern poetry try cyrus parker, they only have two collections out but they have both been great in my opinion. also classic sylvia plath of course.
I love how she acknowledged that rupi kaur poetry is not actually great they’re just great for people who haven’t read good poetry before. Even I like some of her work but she isn’t anything groundbreaking and most of her poems are mostly popular bcuz of the topics they deal with
Loved hearing your input on these books! I highly highly recommend Olivia Gatwood's poetry. Life of the Party is one of the most terrifying and beautiful books I've ever read.

I recently read a poetry book titled 'Blue' by Ashish Yadav. It's on Amazon. It's a pretty sad poetry book, definitely recommend it if you're into melancholic/sorrowful poems.
Out of these ones I've only read Rupi Kaur, but will definitely try something new. My all time favourite is Warsan Shire's Teaching My Mother How To Give Birth (aaand pretty much everything else she's written), it's only 37 pages but damn I don't even know what to say other than everyone needs to read it!

i highly recommend soft science by franny choi and brute by emily skaja. i once was obsessed with the modern poetry movement but find that i don’t relate to the poems anymore, and my own writing has since developed as well. it’s so interesting to see how someone’s own work can change based on the material that they read
hey! you're probably not gonna read this since this video is 1 year old, but I don't know if you have ever read Carlos Drummond de Andrade. He was a Brazilian author and he's pretty famous here. His poems are a wonder, even though some of his books are so full of metaphors it gets hard to understand what he means. He wrote several books, but I'd advise you to start with Sentimento do Mundo - "the world's feeling" in a literal translation, or Claro Enigma (clear enigma), if you like metaphor-based melancholic poetry. I hope this comment gets to you!!
We have such similar tastes in poetry! Except the Chaos of Longing which I sort of despised. I’ve also been working on Please Don’t Go for MONTHS! If you’re interested, you should check out The World’s Wife by Carol Ann Duffy and Depression and other Magic Tricks; those are two of my favs!
Don't buy any of the 2nd or third group of books she mentions until you get 20 love poems and a song of despair by Neruda. If you like this book, then you. should try Ann Sexton, William Carlos Williams, or buy one of the collections from the Poetry foundation and figure out what you like. WARNING: Bukowski might trigger many people.
I'm all for modern/ contemporary/ free verse poetry, but I dislike how people think they are literature enthusiast and intellectual if they read it. With the rise of modern poetry actual traditional is losing its merit. Now the length and ambiguity of poems is really being treated like a negative aspect. Poetry was never supposed to be basic and simple and easy to understand for the reader.
Leftover gunpowder ignited as soon as you recomended milk and honey. That woman wouldn't know poetry from a choking seagull. That book and it's flagship poem was her looking at paradise and calling it predation. Truly a soul worth ignoring.
One thing: people don't criticize contemporary (you called it "modern" which is the wrong word - "modern" refers to modernism in the 20th century) poetry, they criticize instagram poetry. There is a bit of a difference there. Most poets who are writing today are producing work that is nothing like what you're reading on instagram. Just wanted to point that out bc it felt like you generalized all contemporary poetry, which is simply not true.

Oh I love Emily Bronte! If you want poetry that feels more classic I'd recommend the Ted Kooser, Charles Bukowski, and Marie Howe books!
