I remember when this was on TV. Her scream startled me. But she gained a new fan. Great voice. Great music.
I had heard Joanie Sommers' "Johnny Get Angry" for the first time on an oldies station and was startled by its regressive message. I secretly loved it regardless, but I assumed no woman would want to revive it during more enlightened times. When I saw k.d. lang perform it on "Saturday Night Live," I was thrilled that she used it to make a statement that was relevant despite the anachronistic nature of the song. And yes, her vocal is remarkable!
Christ, her range is amazing. The voice - flawless.
I've never heard a more beautiful female voice by a popular singer
The audience was in the presence of greatness!
I saw her in Charlotte NC during this tour and we got to meet her after the show. Not only did she talk to us (we were on the third row) during the show, she remembered us after the show and was very appreciative that we hung around to meet her afterward and nobody else did. I've been crazy about her since 1984, when I read a review of her album in RS, bought it and wore it out. Her voice is hypnotic!
One of the greatest performance artists ever! No one tells a story like kd!
OMG what timing and stage presence and amazing voice talent and superb instrument of voice. She is the whole package and real deal ...amazing.
Spectacular performer, insane voice like no other. Love her❤
I absolutely love this version of the song. KD is an amazing vocalist.
This is the video from the first time I ever saw kd lang. I was so blown away by her performance, what an artists she is. Her vocals are spectacular!
i didn't know about this rendition. at first i expected it was not that same song.
Me too - I remember seeing this performance on TV way back when. Just an amazing performance! Blown away is right...
Same. I was 11 and thought she was amazing, still do!
Yep. Damn straight.
Her high notes are hauntingly lovely and odd
The energy k.d.lang and the reclines had at this place and time OMG. I want to freeze it in time forever for the entire universe to enjoy! I want to melt into the seat where I sit. These folks are no strangers to me, however, I have never seen this particular clip before. I don't want it to ever go away.
Unbelievable what she can do to a song! Amazing singer. Love her soooo much!
Oh she is just great! I love her. She was very flamboyant in her early days. It's great to see. I saw her much more times following Constant Craving. All You Can Eat is still one of my favourite albums.
One of the best performances in history. Bravo!
WOW . . . i'm 62 and consider Her as top 10 of all time!!!
kd lang is a treasure and we don’t deserve her
KD Lang is a great singer and has such stage presence.
That last long pause was so unexpected. I'm counting the seconds of silence, then, she starts singing again, and it scares me. I don't when to expect it!
This is so powerful on so many levels. She's such a great singer and performer!
By far the most underrated singer
One of the best voices ever!
All of her stuff is incredible...but my favorite by far is Shadowland. Her performance is just incredible.

KD demonstrates the absurdity of those lyrics. Brilliant.
Quite possibly the funniest thing I've ever seen. And, man, can she sing.

Wow! Talk about a new spin on an old tune. I like it!
I have video of her performing this on SNL. Love watching her live.
Oh, you're lucky! I was wondering if there was any footage of her SNL performance of this song on RUclips. I remember that performance having such an impact on me! She's amazing. :)
I came across this late at night as a teenager in the 90s. I was not a fan. I was deep into
alternative music at the time. This performance changed my entire view of her. I was instantly in love.

Vintage k.d. lang! langsense, we all stand behind your every effort to promote k.d. to her benefit and for our faithful, loving support that helps k.d. pay the bills! Snatch and grab to our detriment and deprivation makes no sense. WE DON'T WANT NO SENSE, WE WANT langsense! WE WANT k.d. lang!
Excellent! I have never heard her version of this so was suitably impressed! Also looks like Chrissie Hynde from The Pretenders on backing vocals from her distinctive haircut!

It was an awesome performance.
What is it about kd lang that might turn people off. She can't be underated, her talent is very evident. Best female vocalist
I am a gay man and I LOVE kd Lang! I don't think it really matters. Singing/music is universal.
Ben Mink is the BEST!!!!!!!!
why is there a political discussion going on when kd lang is singing?? this is a music site and i have to say the best womon singer in the business is singing PAY ATTENTION
Jesus this is good
I think her cover of this song was meant as more of a statement. The song, in it's original form, sounds almost like a peppy endorsement of domestic violence. Or, at least, an archaic view of masculinity. "Johnny get angry, Johnny get mad...Johnny, show me that you care, really care for me." kd really brings that out with her exaggerated show of being hit (and falling to the floor).
rivergirl2 yup
I know its a very late reply.
But the original song was never about domestic violence. It was about a man being a man.Not the feminine type man,but a manly man.
Johnny is probably a wimp, who doesn't even have the courage to stop Freddie from bothering his girl. When she threatens to leave him instead of showing of her he loves her and wants her to stay by going out of his way and doing crazy romantic things,he instead stands there like a little child being scolded.
Her desire is clear, she wants her man to make her feel protected,to be her rock, someone she can count on through tough times,to show her that he will fight the whole world for her.
@@Bomthebom No. She's ridiculing the songs of the era, when it was "okay" to "show your love" by beating the crap out of you.
@@Bomthebom yes, agreed, and on point!
If KD Lang wanted to make a statement about domestic violence, while poking fun at an early 1960s teen song, she could have chosen "He Hit Me And It Felt Like A Kiss," instead.
"Johnny Get Angry" is about Joanie Sommers wanting her boyfriend to be confident, but not abusive!
@@Bomthebom what crock- it was anti a man who is sensitive and kind and not jealous because another guy cut in-it was a time when "masculine' was tough and demanding and the boss and yes getting angry at every little thng-- i was there!!!!
langsense . . . my spouse From Caster (opps . . . Castor!!! . . .
. . . trust u enjoyed my tiny little joke!!!)
THANKS FOR POSTING!!! I Know That You Know . . .
. . . She Often Performed W/O Shoes!!!! BE HAPPY!!!

That Boy's got soul!! don't u just love it when he gets all angry and rough!!
Did she really just faint onto a pink triangle? LOL!
I've been trying to locate a copy of the Bravo profile show of kd. anyone know where? i love her so much and my old vhs copy is now grainy and faded> thanks I also love her hands!!
I am really pretty sure she did this on Saturday Night Live ( a U.S. tv show.),
I can't find a clip of it.
SNL are very protective of their copyright.. any clips from that show get removed very quickly.
She did. I saw it at the time it aired, and watched on RUclips in years past. The version on SNL, if memory serves, was a little more obvious in that she's referring to to physical/domestic abuse. When she falls towards the end, you could hear some of the audience laugh. I always thought it was because they were made uncomfortable by her so clearly indicating that the character in the song had just been hit by Johnny.
That SNL show was my introduction to k.d. and it stopped me in my tracks. I was stunned, I didn't know who she was, but I knew I had to find out more. It has stuck with me all these years. And I too have searched for the clip but never found it.
Liberace is Kd Langs older sister.
In 1958 Liberace sued a London newspaper and won $25,000 for libel. They said that he was a homosexual. He said that he had to take this action to protect his reputation.
@L00kng She's singing a song that was famous in the 50's/early 60's.Made popular by Carol Deene...
