Honestly I am sick of American youtubers saying you are cruel and nasty if you add fish straight away. The way you do it is perfect you have a large tank and only add a small fish. In your hands there is no chance of the fish suffering. Do people realise that breeders probably lose 50% of the fish that are bred. One fish in a store doesn't show how many didn't make it to sale. Thanks so much Ben. Great channel mate 😎
I have two new guppy fry in a newish ten that would have certainly been eaten, 'new' being old filter media, old plants, old driftwood, old rocks, old substrate, half old water. How new is new? I like to think most people are using their brains and doing their best.
@@voluntaryismistheanswer perfect way to do it. Thise fry wouldn't live otherwise.
“American RUclipsrs” 😂 just stop
@@EpicConspiracy hahaha 🤣
Im american & from what i know of fish is that u are supposed to add fish immediately to start the cycle ive done it for the past 30 some yrs with very few probs
One of the best and honest guy in this community @ben
I truly appreciated you describing every step of your process from what you use to your substrates 👍😁🐟
Yesterday I went to pick up another tank I ordered online at my local Petco because of the sale they were having (Yes I suffer MTS). I walked out with a 29 gal tall with top, HOB, and heater for about 1/2 off. So I thought I would check out the fish while I was there after watching this video of yours. I have never had very good luck with Petco for fish. I was horrified to see whole tanks full of dead fish or fish that would soon be dead. The irony was that one tank had a sign on it saying the fish were under observation while the tanks on either side were full of a dozens dead guppies and cory's. Great place to buy tanks when they are having a sale but I will not trust their fish. Hope you enjoy Tennessee and have a blessed New Year!
The best nitrifying bacteria product is Dr. Tim's One and Only. Second, in my opinion, is Tetra SafeStart. I have successfully used both, but Dr. Yim's appears to start working faster.Use one of those if the Fritz doesn't work. A lot of other products use a terrestrial form of the bacteria, which is not self-sustaining in water.
Jewels are a riverine African with an att-i-tude. Best avoided for group setups, though you can occasionally shoehorn them in with mbunas. They do best singly or in a m/f pair. They prefer different conditions than the Rift Lake cichlids as well.
I don't know much about convicts other than the fact that they breed like rabbits.
I’m sure the firemouth is happy that he is not on the Oscar’s menu anymore! 😆
🤣that Oscar was a beast
I have been using this for years! Works. The Turbo start is very good to.
Really beautiful 👍I set up my 50 used old sponges put in 2 blood parrots love the look did background in ocean blue used a big bath towel white sand. Looks like marine tank.😎
Your vids cheer my day up in these weird times here in the UK
I know this vid is old but i just got a black parrot convict hybrid. Hes pretty entertaining. High energy for his size, alot of personality. Not very aggressive compared to other cichlids
It’s amazing how different personalities can exist with one species of fish. Sounds like you got a good one.
I have used Fritz Zyme 7 to help jump start my aquariums, and it works well. I find that it you add it with some seeded media you can fully stock your tank immediately.
Seeded media is the best! I didn’t have access, so I’m going this route. My local fish store might have some.
I've used Fritz Zyme 7 with seeded media, as well as a fresh started tank.
Great results with both methods.
I used to use Seachem Stability, but now swear by Fritz Zyme 7.
This is really great to be able to follow this new journey in chapter in your life!! I'm excited to be here to see all these wonderful new tanks set up!! Happy happy New Year Ben!! Much love 🙏🙏🎉🎊🙌🌿🐟🌿💚
Enjoyed that very much... Thanks and happy new year. X
Really excited updates, It’s great to see some of the tank is up and running. Welcome to proper winters 😆
Good choices been! Exciting to see fish back in your life! I kept a school of fire mouth‘s in my very first Cichlid tank. Beware of the jewel Cichlid though. They are extremely aggressive and the only ones I’ve ever had have killed everything in my tank
Thank you. I’m glad I held off on that fish.
For the " newbies;" this video is FANTASTIC!!! THANKS, Ben.👏
Awesome to see strawberry firefish, thanks Ben
Fritz Zyme 7 is great but I always tell people to be careful from ordering it on Amazon because you can often get bottles with dead bacteria.
I thought I missed an episode. The description says Vlog #11 but the title says #12. Great video as always! 🙌🏼
Good catch! I changed it and thank you for pointing that out👍🏻
Glad to see you back in the business. Are you planning on testing the water daily for ammonia and nitrite? Fish in cycle is very frown upon these days.
Yes. And I will be adding Zyme 7 for several days in a row
I have 220 filled with green terror chiclids and firemouth chiclids two of my favorite South America chiclids , new tanks look great
Happy New Years sir. Looking forward to see the new journey of your fish tank ( cichlid guru nyc)
The convicts are cool if you want a little cichlid that'll reproduces like crazy! haha!
I’ve heard they are rabbits 🤣

Just so you know I sent the email to your gmail account but not sure you received it. Can you check and let me know please? If it is too much trouble do not worry at all. All the best my friend.
I love Safe. It lasts forever. I’ve used the refrigerated version of zyme 700. It worked great
Going forward, get yourself Safe Ben...it's the best way to save on dechlorinator... especially for someone who will have multiple tanks. Glad to see things coming along!
Ben, be careful which Beamswork light you get... don't get a planted tank light as I once did...that light is extremely bright and will cause algae blooms within a matter of a few days.
Hello GP! Love safe, especially with larger set ups. I’ve been using this type of light for quite some time (it’s what I had on my 150 and 100 in Calif) and never had an algae issue. We’ll see.
@@BenOchart Beamswork makes several different models...I have the same 6ft light you are using and it's great...just make sure you get the same one but in 48 inches. They also make a planted tank light in the same size. Do NOT get that one, you'll regret it, lol. Easiest way to tell is by looking at the pictures of the light online. If it has 5 LEDs in each column on the light, stay away from it. You want the one that has 3 LEDs per column.
Good thinking Ben I’m in Oak Ridge Tennessee I go out to Cades Cove to collect native minnows and small fish as my test fish...
I few nights ago we went to see the Oak Ridge Boys 😀. I’m gonna have to check out that cove someday.
I am not so far and used my bait minnows to start my pond, they were happy enough not to get a hook through the back and decided to thrive.
@@BenOchart also a great place to collect nice rock and drift wood out of the river 💪🏾
Glad to see getting back into it✌🏼❤
Aren’t you supposed to used fritz turbo start 700? The turbo start has what the zyme # 7 contains, except it’s 7 times as potent, for tank start ups, and then you use zyme 7 during maintenance.
I added fish and monitored my levels of ammonia. Once they started to rise, I added Fritzyme 700. 7 hours later my tank was cycled, and has been up and running smooth for a year. Love the stuff, not cheap though
7 will get you there as well😀👍🏻
Fritz also has Turbo start, which I use to “instantly cycle” any new tanks and to keep tanks ready for fish, when moving fry from tank to tank and receiving new fish to breed, etc.
I agree with this....have used Turbo Start a few times, a little pricey but really worth it !!!
It’s gotta feel good to have fish again!!!!!!
I actually did have a sense of joy in finally having a tank again😀👍🏻
Ben, glad to see that your journey is starting again! In the spirit of always be learning, here are some thoughts and tidbits. A lot of the fish you were looking at are actually Central American and not South American (Firemouth, Convict). That's why many folks call the tanks Old World or New World, or some such derivation. That little lovely Jewel cichlid is actually a West African fish and some of them grow up to be stunning. And I agree with others who commented here that I like your approach to cycling. It works and is fine as long as you're not overcrowding from the start. Clearly you are not! Keep on sharing brother.
Its exciting to have fish again cant wait till you have a finished tank..
I love it works good❤
And easy to remove if you ever want a change 😀👍🏻
I think the biggest lesson here was not to buy just for sake of it not picky just rational attitude toward the welfare of the fish.👌 & a HNY👍
Brother Ben,
Looks like all is well, tanks are looking phenomenal. Convict cichlidsdo best with oscar, texas cichlid, geophagus, firmouth, jack Dempsey pretty much a wide variety of south and central American cichlids even with an arowana, howerton, I did grow together since they were babies. But convict cichlids are phenomenal. They have there back fins similar to flowerhorns. Unique specimens.
Congratulations and best wishes on your new tanks !
Is your plan to use the single fish in the new tanks as quarantine?
I look forward to the journey,
Jim
Thank you! The fish will help cycle the tank by adding waste and will show me that the tank is ready for more fish.
Ben you should do a Frontosa tank ! There are not many knowledgeable Fisk keepers with videos on the Frontosa. Most videos on RUclips are just short, and with no real explanation on how to care for them. And would look great in your new fish room.
good pick on the fire mouth i love those
You missed out on the ice storm we usually get 😉
Aquatic Critter always have Cichlids 👍
Try Fritz Turbostart next time
You should check out walmart new hang on the back filters by aqua tech. I love marineland 400 but aqua tech is really nice. I love Tennessee too we moved down year ago
For some reason I felt like I was getting new fish while watching this. Its a shame the selection wasn't that great but firemouth cichlids are actually great fish. I have one and so far he is not aggressive but he is still small so we will see. Can't wait to see what you pick up at the LFS.
The strawberry looks nice and healthy too!
These tanks are going to be great.
Thanks for coming along with me Stephen😀👍🏻
Most thorichthys species are all bark and little bite. I keep my pasionis with swordtails to give you an idea of their aggression levels.
Morning Ben
Firemouths occur in Central America and often come from very hard waters. Harder than Malawi. But like most tank raised cichlids they'll do fine in anything above a pH of 7.
I'm pretty sure you're going for a variety, but the Thorichthys fish do pretty well in a group. 6 in a 55 is doable and I think you'd really like their behavior.
You’re suggesting 6 fire mouths?
@@BenOchart Only if you'd like to try a colony. In your previous video you mentioned Severums and a GT. Maybe a chocolate. If you're getting different species I wouldn't do a colony of FMs.
I kept a dozen Thorichthys in a 125 years ago with other species. They're fantastic and provide a lot of activity. I have a video somewhere on my channel.
I looked this up on cichlidae.com, just to be sure I wasn't giving any misinformation-
Thorichthys species distribute in forest and jungle lowland (less than 450 meters over sea level) fresh water bodies in the Atlantic slope in southern Mexico (7 species), Belize (2 species), Guatemala (5 species) and northern Honduras (1 species). They inhabit ponds, swamps, lakes and slow to moderately flowing areas of rivers in their range, as well as very small creeks, sometimes no more that 10 cm deep. Water chemistry is always on the alkaline side with pH measurements around 7.5 to 8.5, hardness may greatly vary from hard to very hard. Water temperature range from 24 to 28 Celsius degrees.
@@BenOchart thorichthys species do best in groups. I have 5 pasionis with a bunch of green swordtails in a 5' 120.
And yep. Firemouths are found in waters with a ph as high as 9!
Happy newyear for jou end the familie from Belgium
Thank you and Happy New Year to you😀
Funny seeing you bundled all up after seeing you dressed for the Cali weather. What brought you to Tn?
To be closer to our oldest daughter and cost of living/quality of life 😀
Hey Ben, just a reminder to make sure you head to Cichlid Shack and grab a Phoenix Peacock. You said you wanted one in your peacock tank.
Funny you should say that. I sent a message to James a couple days ago about that fish😀👍🏻
I have a convict he is a nice looking fish but I would suggest if u get one to make him one of the last fish and same or smaller the aggression is real lol
Great choices!
I've kept convicts in a heavily planted community setting successfully. They were the only cichlids in the tank. They are beautiful lively fish along with being great parents. They will, however, breed you out of house & home if you have no outlet for the fry.
I find the best fish which can handle cichlids are rainbowfish which make great dither fish, can hold their own, are very active, and come in many species.
It's funny to see the tanned sunny California boy wearing a jacket and toboggan instead of short sleeve shirts and shorts!
🤣 so true, but I’m honestly enjoying “seasons”, something I was unfamiliar with in SoCal😀👍🏻
Cool stuff Ben 👍🏻I use Fluval Aqua plus. It works and comes in 2L bottles for my water Conditioner 👍🏻 I don’t use a bacteria boost as I always have cycled filter media these days but I used to use Fritz😀👍🏻 you would think they would have moved the Oscar 🤔 convicts are okay kept in a tank where they can be the dominant fish but I wouldn’t put them in a tank with much larger fish they will still fight with the larger fish they will nip fins and cause problems. They would be better in a species thank or with fish of similar sizes and temperaments😀👍🏻
Firemouth looks great. Happy new year. I might get some jewels next house
Someone in the comments mentioned how Jewels can be extremely aggressive, so plz look into it a bit first.
@@BenOchart I actually am considering some jewels myself for my 29 in my house. But I might wait until either the little tetras die off or I move out of Michigan whichever comes first. Moving out of Michigan just might happen first
@@BenOchart I guess it depends on the fish temperament and where they were bought. Honestly, my cichlids aren't exactly jewels, but they can get mean when they want to. They only attack the sick. Otherwise mine get along as I have had mine for almost 2 years come September. Well some are almost 2 years old, some were born in my tanks through the pandemic. Some I just recently got this year as juvies that aren't but a month old at best. Kind of a cool thing
New sub ❤️
I really enjoyed this!
Thank you for the sub, it’s much appreciated 😀👍🏻
Hi! I'm starting a 5 gallon tank with eco complete as my substrate lots of live plants and I will be adding a betta i also purchased turbo start by fritz so how would that work? (Anyone can answer I'll take any help) thanks!
Frozen brine shrimp they eat rite away with garlic powder so far all tanks are good😎👍
HI BEN; GREAT START......LITTLE BY LITTLE.....YOU GETTING THERE.....SO HAPPY FOR YOU....DANNY
Thank you buddy!
@@BenOchart YOUR WELCOME....
Did the Fritz 7 work????
Yes, both tanks are thriving 😀👍🏻
Excellent selections. Firemouths are fantastic schooling cichlids. And some Geophagus as well. Imagine how much fun the jurupari would have with that sand. I quite enjoy the convicts too, but they can be aggro and breed like rodents. LFS here had a tank of mature piranhas and smack dab in the middle were a pair of convicts and their swarm of fry. LOL Are you going to keep the tanks decor free?
No, decor will be getting set over the next few weeks. Thanks for watching and commenting.
@@BenOchart No worries. I enjoy your vids.
I have 2 Jewels in with my peacocks and haps. They’re pretty tough and hold their own with larger fish all around. The convicts can be a handful. A male can morph into a female and breed almost nonstop. The firemouth has interesting personalities.
I really enjoyed this video..very informative and enjoyable looking at the fish while you described about each one..thanks for taking us along..also quick question..I'm going to be trying some fritz bacteria starter..does it need to be kept in fridge after I open it?
700 does but their 7 product doesn’t
Convicts r very aggresive from what i know especially when having fry theyre best kept in a monospecies tank cuz theyll kill any other fish
In my area I've had good luck with Tampa Bay Cichlids .
@ james adcock: Tampa Bay Area?? Want a naughty Venustus?? 8 or 9 inches long. AGGRESSIVE.
Pretty fish!
So those filters are basically power heads with mechanical and potentially chemical filtration attached? I’m starting a new display 180g with a sump that will handle just about everything when it comes to biological filtration (lots of Biohome). I am worried, however, about the mechanical filtration ability of something that just filters by overflow. I was planning on adding some power heads to keep the water moving skyward, but this type of filter seems like it would add the best of both worlds. They also seem pretty cheap too.
My thoughts exactly. There is a middle section in each of the there sponge stages that allow for things like carbon (activated charcoal)
@@BenOchart thanks! How are you liking Tennessee? My mother in law is from Dickson. The only time I went out there I felt like they were speaking a foreign language! I’m from NorCal.
Happy New Year Ben! Do you happen to know the difference between the Zyme 7 and the Turbo start? Thanks.
Happy New Year! No, I just know that the Zyme 7 was highly recommended.
Ben I need ur advice what’s the best way to get a juvi Cichlid to grow a little faster got this polystigma that want to get some size before I add him to my main tank ? And zyme 7 does what it says :) I always add it after doing a fx6 cleaning
Get some sterbai Corys Ben they will turn the sand over and go great at high temperatures with Discus...
Nice. I’ve got to look into them. Thanks for the tip!
every convict ive ever owned killed all its tank mate until i got a spawning pair then they spawned so much i couldnt give away the fry fast enough
I keep hearing this and think I will be avoiding convicts.
Hello, really love your videos. Extremely helpful. Thank you for that. I do have a question. I husband and I set up our 29 gallon fish tank brand new. We added the fritz seven Zijm first then he added the chlorinator. All within five minutes of each other. We did this on Sunday. Our tank is a little cloudy now we have no fish in currently. Also realized that the fritz seven we purchased from a local pet store already had been expired. Are we doomed? What is the best way to fix this or just let it run its course we will be heading back to the pet store to return that and of course check the dates. Thank you.
First add water treatment, then the FritzZyme. Expired bottle will not work. I suggest you do water tests to see where you’re at.
I got I’ve lights on my tanks good prices on eBay 👍
Great video Ben. My dragon blood fry and my ob fry are almost big enough to send to you. One inch so far. And my yellow blaze are breeding like crazy. If you get a chance check them out.
Thanks Terry, I will.
@@BenOchart I can’t wait for cichlids and coffee
@Ben Ochart where in Tennessee do you live?
I have a 180 gallon filled 2 weeks ago added stability for 1 week fish food daily but no ammonia or nitrate s showing up I'm thinking of getting 1 catfish to help it cycle
Good product placement.
Did you tell the store employees about the Oscar situation.
The fire mouth I bought was in the tank with the Oscar and we talked about that Oscar👍🏻
Hi. I have been struggling with cycling my tank with Koi fish. I have a 40 Gallon tank with 7 (3-5 inch) size koi.
I have a hanging 70 Gallon filtration unit. I have purchases the API Quick Start bottle but it’s worthless. I have been doing 20-30% water changes to help lower the nitrates and nitrites also. Now I have just ordered the Fritz 7 Turbo to add healthy bacteria and hope the tank does it’s cycle. I have also tried to minimize over feeding and I clean my filter media with tank water so I can keep my bacteria alive.
Any advice on my journey. Thanks
The Fritz product should do the trick. Be sure to condition the water before adding the fritz and that the bottle of fritz is not expired. Otherwise, just follow the instructions on the bottle on your fish should do fine. One point, I wouldn't mess with the filters. leave them alone during the cycling. Let the bacteria really take hold and make sure that the tank is well oxygenated since O2 is vital for beneficial bacterial.
Where did you get the plastic lids you have on your tanks??
The best price was on eBay
Hello Ben, I can’t seen to get my tank to clear up it’s a 75 gal with about 25 fish I run a fx6 and to wave makers. I just don’t under stand what I’m doing wrong. Need help
Are you using any chemical filtration like Seachem Purigen or Boyd’s ChemiPure?
@@BenOchart no sir I’m not it sounds like I should be, do you put it in the filter?
In the early stages of setting up an aquarium, if it became cloudy, I found that products like those can really help. Put them in the filter so the water touches it last before returning to the tank. Another strategy is to use a product like Seachem Clarity (liquid additive) and a Poly-fill (crib batting usually available at fabric stores or places like Walmart) or Pinky Filter Floss product in your filter.
That Oscar though lmfao
What a brut.
Those red eyed Tetras are not compatible with Bettas either. They destroyed my son's bettas tail and when I found him flesh rot/skin rot had already set in. I had to euthanize him because none of the meds worked and his body kept getting shorter and shorter.
Who knew tetras could be such jerks?
Go O's ! You from Baltimore?
Actually that's a hat from a college my youngest son went to. Their team was "The Mighty Oaks"
Only issue with that would be you don’t know what else you are adding to the tank. Other diseases would be my worry. I never purchase anything from Petco or Petsmart.
I get it. The few fish I’ve gotten from them over the years have been okay. Fingers crossed.
The jewels. Yes! Get the jewels. Forget about the convicts, they are jerks
I heard in the comments that Jewels can be overly aggressive. Thoughts?
@@BenOchart I have seen them to be the opposite at least this side of the country. Not to otherwise anywhere else.
@@BenOchart I around 45+ Red Jewels from a spawning last year. I refer to them as killers. They have killed EB Acaras, Convicts, and non-cichlids to the point that I now keep them in species only tank. I did for a while housed six Red Jewels with adult Oscars, Jack Dempseys and Convicts. I ultimately removed them do to their aggressive behavior toward the JDs and Convicts. The JD & Convicts held their own, but I just tired of the aggression.
I have 2 jewels with my peacocks and haps. They’re tough to hang in there with the larger fish all around. They typically stay at the bottom of the tank out so they stay off the radar of the open water swimmers. They can be territorial but the usual decor changes keep that under control for me.
I always thought Firemouths were Central American species.
They are
🤔 any local fish stores other than the big box stores?
Yes, but I wanted inexpensive fish for the test and the big box prices are the best.
Did you leave the other fish behind for the Oscar’s to eat?
🤣🤣🤣no
Would you be able to help me identify what African cichlids I have? Just got them from petsmart and the sign just said assorted. Suggestions on best way to figure it out? I have pics but can’t post them here. Thank you!
Join Ben O’Cichlid on Facebook. Lots of helpful fishkeepers there.
Why didn't you wash the substrate?
They both claim to be pre-washed and the Cichlid substrate is loaded with beneficial bacteria. By putting the substrate in first and having the water hit something like a plate, the sand was not disturbed and there was hardly any dust.
@@BenOchart Don't you worry though that later when you vacuum the sand you'll kick up dust particles that will be dangerous to your fish? Is this, perhaps, less of a concern in larger fish like cichlids?
The parrot fish were nice become pets😎
Hey Ben why we looking like cat burglar lol
🤣🤣🤣it was too cold for this SoCal kid
@@BenOchart I was gonna ask, when are you moving back!

Do plenty water changes and keep adding the bacteria the only way it works' fish r fish regardless of price
Found a beautiful orange male peacock at PetSmart for 12 dollars.
So you won't kill your BB in the sponge filter if you wash it with untreated tap water but you will kill the BB in the starter if you dump it in untreated water???
I’m using a system or strategy that counts on the deep substrate as the primary home of my BB.
@@BenOchart I can't seem to keep a cycle going in my 29 gallon . I follow you and take a good bit of you're advice . I have a bare bottom 29 gallon with a single long ear sunfish that I feed an earthworm every other day. Is it because my tank is so lightly stocked. I vac and change one third of the water every 2 weeks.
@@jessiehenderson44 what kind of filtration? If you have no substrate, you are going to need somewhere for the beneficial bacteria to grow like biological media.
I agree with Russell. Put a very porous rock in there like a piece of lava rock and you’ll get a more stable BB colony going. Then don’t mess with the rock, just let it grow.
@@russellbrunet3924 I'm running [too much] filtration. It's a combination of 1 tetra whisper ex 70 one side with lava rock and 1 inch sponge squares and one side cut to fit sponge 1 one topfin 20 with ctf sponge one aquatic 20-40 with lava rock and purigen and 2 60 gallon sponge filters one medium one fine with a danner ap4 airpumps both sponges are hot rodded with an airstone and I have two large pieces of rainbow rock both pieces measure around 8×10 inches and 2 inches thick.
How many trays come in pack ?
One large tray
I love the fritz products and have fishless cycled in 10 days using it and their fishless fuel combined with eco complete substrate works great 👍
What happened to saying you would stay a no ad channel?
But I’m glad to see the mixed black and white substrate!! I hope showing you my tank inspired you a bit! Hope the move went well and you and your family are staying safe!! Kind of bummed to see you added ads to the Chanel but hey I’m sure I would do the same thing, especially during a pandemic, any extra revenue I’m sure helps with the hobby and to maintain it.
There have been ads from the beginning but YT started pushing “mid roll” ads for longer videos.
Isn't that sand going to get into that style of filter and trash it from the cichlids doing what cichlids Do! 🤪😉🤗😇 Petco has better fish selection plus saltwater fish petsmart does not have! Atleast here in NJ!😉😇
Not an issue since I keep them as high as possible and the 3 stage sponges should hold everything back.
@@BenOchart I guess my 2 blood red parrot fish in their 75 gallon using black Tahitian Moon Sand didn't get the memo considering they continue to suck up sand and spit into my 2 aquaclear 110's.😉🤫 I have cut aquaclear 110 sponges that are fine but not superfine on the water inlet tube.😜 It helps but the small particle sized sand still finds its way into the motor from time to time!🙄🤫😇
