The best Metallica album tone that James Hetfield actually doesn’t like
HTML-код

- And Justice For All has been criticized by Metallica themselves about sounding “thin” because they based all the mix around the guitar and drum sounds that James and Lars liked at that time. Hetfield mentioned that they were playing a lot of shows during the recording sessions and because of that his ears were exhausted he felt the need to add more high frequencies to the guitars. Even then it is such an important piece of metal history for sure and most of us agree that it is the most aggressive Metallica album sound ever!
Thanks for watching !

blackened is such a masterpiece and the intro is untouchable
I thought Battery was the best sh1t ever when I heard it, but in typical Metallica style they totally trumped it with this genius piece
It's got to be one of the best thrash riffs ever.
also is the end
@@skullkrusher4418 You should thank Jason Newsted for that
@@pepitomontoya688took me a few extra seconds to get it lol
And justice for all is actually my favorite guitar tone ever for some reason. It could also be that it's the album that made me learn guitar and I learned the majority of playing guitar through it.
Justice is THE thrash tone!
@@brock2443 what about Arise?
Me to
My favorite is Ride the Lightning tone
@@Turnage497 I love that one too, but there's just something about the precision of the and justice tone that I love. Also how perfectly the tone goes with the songs. I guess that part could be said about both. I gotta say though, ride the lightning tone has more depth and "fills the room" better. Fade to black is also one my favorite metallica songs, and i can't imaging it having a different tone. The same can be said about for whom the bell tolls.
How the fuck could James Hetfield regret this tone ?
True artists are rarely satisfied with their work.
He didn't.
@@nckhed I wonder if they're satisfied with their new album
Because it’s their best tone and everything afterwards is always compared to this. They can’t ever reuse because James voice wouldn’t match and their music is more hard rock and is why they stick with loud bassy compressed sound.
as far as actual song production goes, its not great. takes up too much space in the mix and drowns everything else out.
Their best guitar tone. Razor sharp, made the speed picking come through like a hot knife through butter. I just wish the drums matched the '89 Seattle show sound, but then again that should have turned AJFA into a neutron star and ended our whole solar system. Man was never meant to be that heavy.
Not to mention if the bass was as audible as it was seattle 89.
if the studio versions was the same as the seattle 89 show, not just our solar system would collapse, the very fabric of space time would fold in on itself in the face of something so heavy
Hardest hour of metal music ever played. Seattle 89 is ascended God tier
@@barackhusseinosama9189 that avatar and handle tho 😂
And Justice For All is my favorite album
As midless or airless ass this tone is, it’s definitely my favorite Hetfield sound
Same. Overall guitar recording tone doesn't necessarily have to be relegated to one guitar. Dream Theater's Awake probably has the most criminal, impeccable use of a Mesa Boogie and the overall guitar sound on that album was quad-tracked.
For sure. I doubt James would have given a single shit what a sound engineer told him about his tone when Metallica was recording AJFA.
As big of a disaster as the album was BEHIND the scenes, it's legendary for a reason. You know you have lightning coming out of your fingertips when your army of fans are at each other's throats sometimes over which is better; This album, or fucking *Master of Puppets.*
It’s so sick, it feels like it’s sucking the air right from your ears
If I was blindfolded I'd say this was the original, holy cow
almost, there's a couple inconsistencies from the actual recording.
The bends aren't quite right. But yeah, sounds great.
Over 30 years and this intro still gives me shivers down my spine.
I'm not gunna lie.. i was mad invested. That cut off at 1:05 really hurt.
The AJFA guitar tone is my favorite. Sure the highs and lows are EQ'd like crazy, but it's still God-like to me. That album inspired me to start playing guitar and drums.
Well done!! As a kid, this tone was the standard for "heavy", especially among the similar early 90's scooped death metal tones of the day.
Still incredibly effective in a vacuum, but perhaps iffy in a full mix &/or at stage volume imo.
Pestilence's Consuming Impulse is OP for 90's death metal tone
@S Nunez that was one of the 1st albums I had in mind actually! Love it so much
James should be regretting more about how he and Lars treated Jason during this era. Funny guy
it was simply brotherly teasing get a grip
they made the guy a milionaire and a rock superstar
hell I'd let them shit in my mouth if that was the price for a slice of that
Funny guy 🗿
@@vincent2053, isn’t he?
We all know Lars is a dick but if you choosing between Lars and Jason, the smart move is still Lars.
It was over 30 years ago, who cares
One of the greatest intros ever!
I don't understand why James doesn't like the tone, it's killer, and so recognisable.
When I was a kid, gibson korinas had me falling in love with xplorer shapes. James’ MX 250 had me DROOLING over them 🤤 and the fact that he’s one of my main inspirations is icing on the cake. I don’t think I’ve ever wanted a single guitar so badly in my life.
This riff is so hypnotic when played backwards , this is the sound i imagine when I think about the apocalypse
Man I love your collection of guitars
you absolutely nailed it, perfection
You nailed it!! Great job 😊
This was the best tone. They need more of this tone. Justice was my favorite Metallica album. Just need to up the bass on it and re release it that way.
If they ever do they better call jason again and tour with him
And of course Robert too
I just saw one of your videos on instagram and now you‘re here on my youtube recommendations
Killer sounds brotha 🤙
Killer work man
Such an incredible metal guitar tone.
I love the Justice tone. It's killer.
I get the guitar tone on this album was love or hate but the lack of any bass in the overall mix of the recording was criminal.
For some reason, with AJFA, I kinda don't miss the bass.
You'll get ur damn BASS through the subs by the kick drum and chugs man!! Love it or leavve it!
I so love this tone !
Love this sound!
Straight to the point without any uselss blabber, good job.
I try so hard to get that tone lol
all the bass all the treble none mids
Bias FX has two main And Justice For All tones
"...but in the end it doesn't even matter"? 🎵🎶 😅
Beautiful playing!! Oh, it almost made me cry. Justice is actually my favorite album. And I think I'll leave it untouched regardless what came/comes after. When I tell people it's my favourite one they all come back with the typical stuff: Master is the best one, you can't hear the bass, the tone, the length, blah blah. I don't care. It's arguably their most progressive album and that's what I love about it. And I do love the tone as well. All songs are great and masterpieces like Blackened, One, Justice, Frayed Ends of Sanity, To Live is To Die and classics like Harvester of Sorrow. My lifetime ultimate goal would be to be able to play the whole album, unfortunately I'm pretty sure that won't happen haha. Great video again, keep it up!
Blackened intro is a ticket to instant goosebumps
Man, that was fucking DOPE!
I love watching the forward into reverse
THATS HOW THEY PLAYED THAT DAMN INTRO??? it always sounded so badass, but i didnt know that shit was in reverse
And Justice For All has my all-time favorite guitar tone.
You've catched the tone! 😉👍🎸🎵🎶
It feels so right ,never stop thrashing
Justice fa is the album that got me into Metallica. This is my favourite album because of the guitar tone. It is unique and unmistakable and no other metal album sounds like it.
And Justice For All is my second favorite album. maybe first. That sound riff in Blackened... man. it's so voilent
I saw them on this tour. 1986. First time. I was 16.
The Blackened Intro is the best Intro in Metal History, i love James for his harmonic Ideas
Justice is my favorite Metallica album. It’s perfect!
One of the most epic intro ever.
Guitar tone was great. Clear and piercing but also dark and hollow, fitting the tone of the album subject matter extremely well.
The album just needed a touch more bass, not the Justice for Jason amount though, because some of that hollowness needs to be preserved.
this is great
Best intro part in metal music
gonna need the full song please
It's already a full song. Go check this song out, it's called blackened
Magical
Justice is great but IMO, their best tone is the black album. No matter what you listen to it on, it always sounds so clear and perfect, killer video dude 😎🤘🏼
With the benefit of hindsight, and having listened to it A LOT on headphones as a kid, my main issue with the Black Album is that the drums, especially the snare, are too loud in the mix.
From a pure sound POV, I think Garage, Inc is probably for me the best sounding Metallica album. Guitars are forward in the mix but not to the point of there being no rythym section and the vocals sound great too.
@@cruachan1191load and reload imo sound great. everything shines, and the double guitar takes from james and kirk give it a lot more warmth.
@@James-cr8mt Agreed, Load and Reload sound great too. Death Magnetic is far too compressed, Hardwired sounds good too though.
Most epic intro EVER!!! Fuck Yeah!!!
AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Best guitar tone imo
I think AJFA is the most complex, progressive album they've done. Too bad they mixed the bass out, but the tunes are all great. One of the last things I bought on vinyl in the 80s before vinyl disappeared from the store racks.
Gorgeous xplorer, you should write "EET FUK" on it
The reversed blackend intro was 🔥
Personally, I don't think he's topped the original studio tone of "Sad But True", but I'm massively impressed by your performance of the reversed intro. Never seen it played as a natural composition
I wish they would use this or literally any of their other guitar tones instead of the current htsd/72 seasons tone
The guitar tone was so good I didn't notice the lack of bass.
He regreats the sound of the RTL guitar despiting being his favorite album (he is damn right!) for some reason. The black album RTL and AJFA tones are fucking badass
Probably bc of the reverb
Imo the only track where it is a bit overwhelming is Fight Fire With Fire
You can barely hear wtf James is playing
@@Sklen34 for the longest time i thought ffwf was just down picking because of how much reverb smears the tremolo picking. it provides a ton of of atmosphere but it has its drawbacks
@@defaultdan7923 I think ffwf has that amount of reverb to possibly "mask" some errors, but it's just a guess
@@defaultdan7923 But yeah, it gives a lot of atmosphere. If they done it like RTL would be perfect
Amp settings? Cause that was awesome
For me, this is the best Metallica record and tone. But, this is me… awesome video 🤟🏻😀
I really like this
best album and sound they have
Blackened is my favorite song
I'm pretty sure that everyone already knows that this particular little opening riff to Blackened actually a piece they took and played it backwards.
Are you going to get any of Kirk's KH-V's? They look really nice.
Straight up blue-balls thanks to not hearing a little bit of the main riff right at the end
Guitars sound great on on ajfa, there is just that bass case…😢
Awesome tone. We could argue which album's tone is the best. But the truth is - it would be a bit boring if all albums had the same tone, even if it's the best. This tone is awesome and distinctive, one can immediately understand it's AJFA.
Please I need to know the EXACT settings
I love this song man. C'mon 🤘🏻
I love it
BAD ASS
The only "regret" I've heard him mention is KEA. He said he wished it was beefier. This regarding to hearing Seek in hockey arenas.
How did you get this tone ?. What gear ?
How’d you achieve the tone?
COOL❤
i literally had no idea bro was playing blackened until he reversed it
Please do some kirk hammett live tones (2023)
Because I love kirk hammett
AJfA is one of my favorite albums from anyone of all time.
Justice is an awesome guitar and bass drum mix, the rest suffers, but the guitars sound huge.
Real Esp Explorer?
Seen Metallica 7 times they played Blackened all 7 times live...my all time favorite song
This tone is totally badass, nevermind the new one.
I think the justice guitar tone is sick
Love this tone, but I still think Ride is their best record.
AJFA tone is my favorite album and favorite tone
Has he heard the last couple album tones?
I'm more impressed with the fact that you have an actual ESP explorer and not an LTD. 9 times out of 10 I see people with LTD's (myself included; not judging) Refreshing to see ESP on the headstock.
AJFA the best album, the most complex, the grooviest, the best tone, best vocals, and Lars best drumming
Put any metal song with this tone it would have 10 more balls
Bizarre. One of the greatest metal guitar tones of all time was n my opinion and seems I’m not the only one who feels this way.
Is this a legit esp mx pre lawsuit? Or a copy?
this tone is fucking crushing, but it was also almost single-handedly the reason why the bass was doomed from the start (along with lars). there’s just no room for bass with the chugging that AJFA’s tone has
RTL overall, but fade to black specifically is the best a metal guitar has ever sounded.
still the greatest metal intro of all time......
If i were to play with a guitar tone for the rest of my life it would be the AJFA tone hands down
As much as i love every song on this album, if would've been better with the MoP tone/ADD BASS😭
Justice tone is fucking incredible if you ask me!! The bass didn't need to be audible with that tone lol the album is heavy af
On the mixing table: A slight boost to the mids, drop the low end a smidge. Turn up Jason in the mix. BOOM: Epic album tone.
Also use the room mics for the drums instead of just the close-in ones
