I love the first solo in The Four Horsemen, he just played 1 time, and if im not wrong he created that solo (the first one). He should play that solo, its so cool.
I love it too (and yes he wrote this one instead of dave), they don't play it anymore because this solo plays out in the Sweet Home Alibama section, and for obvious reasons they don't play that riff anymore.
@@ResubidorSerial no, the sweet home Alabama part wasn't part of Dave's solos as it wasn't meant to be in the song, but they added that part after Dave departure, that's the only solo in KEA that is written fully by Kirk.
They only play the first part of the solo. And even then Kirk skips the tapping part of the solo nowadays which makes me so mad cause it's the best part of the solo imo. If you want a live performance where Kirk plays it like on the record, watch Blackened from the Seattle '89 show. They play it much faster than on the record too.
He most likely can’t play them anymore. I’ve no idea what happened to the guy but his playing has taken a severe nosedive since the 90s. And the solos he writes today are just awful. It’s hard to believe he wrote and play3 ones like this once in a lifetime…..he was never exactly Dimebag but he could certainly play well. I’ve haven’t heard him play the Fade to Black outro solo well for over 20 years…..
I wish Kirk still did this kinda stuff. Even his solos on the black album were really good. His solos are the reason I play guitar and in recent years they have been some of the Metallica solos of all time.
It's not Kirk's fault that such parts aren't played anymore. When the two bosses say we'll do a shorter version of a song, then it will happen. Blackened is not the only Song, also on Battery and some others it's the same, and it's a shame, because these parts are so damn good. I really can't understand it
I agree on that for battery. I love the are you alive part. That part in the song is amazing. I’ve heard people say they can’t play that part anymore but that makes no sense. That parts easy
The first 30 second of that solo is my favorite part of any song in that album and in general. The lick and ooooh that heavy ass riff james play under that is so brutal.
I don't know why they stopped playing the last part of the solo years ago, Is the best part of the song. I think James just started coming in too early and no one says anything..
In the studio version, when Lars does the build up to go back to the main riff, he hits an extra 8th note which in term offsets the beat, this is really difficult to pull of live because of how in sync you have to be with the rest of the band, which Lars isn't exactly known for.
My man make a video of you playing the "God that failed" solo...... .I've have always felt like that was one of the most under-appreciated solos of all time 💯💯
Great video, I don't know about the controversy of what he do or don't play but this is just a valuable up close look at the notes and mindset and then the bonus of activating the harmonizer, shutting it off and hitting the echo at the end is perfect for beginners to visualize solo's being broken down into little bites and make it fathomable to be able to play!
There's a whole list of stuff Kirk cuts when playing live, so don't bother... 🤣 But anyway... Did you ever get the feeling when seeing bands playing songs live that used to be played faithful to the original and you would love to hear them just like the record at least once? This take of yours completely quenches that kind of thirst! Right, so that's a harmonized part right before it goes crazier... Did you use a similar effect (harmonizer "pedal") in your Axe Fx?
@@gallettiguitartones Ikr? Aerosmith for example don't play Walk This Way the way they used to anymore. Surely they must have their reasons, but it's a pity, because the original is still a nice song. There are many more examples...
@Cthulhu Awaken I agree that it kinda sucks that Kirk doesn’t play some solos like on the record anymore. The Blackened solo and Fade to Black are my favs and he just doesn’t play it like on the record. He just improvises with tons of wah or cuts it short sometimes. Ride the Lightning is another solo that he doesn’t really play like on the record. However I can sort of understand why he feels the need to improvise at this point. When who’ve toured as much as these guys have for the past 40 years and played the same songs over and over again, it can kinda get repetitive, so I can see why Kirk would try different things to make them more interesting. After all they also are entertainers. When I wanna see the Blackened solo played exactly like on the record or any live performance of them better than the record, the Seattle ‘89 show is my go to. Or the Toronto ‘86 when they played every song almost 20% faster.
@@willharry6835 I agree with you at about 90%. The problems (for Kirk) come when the ideas you came up with to make the solo sound different become repetitive and obvious themselves. The Fade To Black example is really right on the money because Kirk has been boring us to death with that wah nonsense forever, totally ruining what is one of the most emotional solos ever (and I'm not even kidding, since many claim it's the best metal ballad ever made). And so on and so forth.
@@Cthulhu_Awaken I totally agree with you. Kirk is one of my favorite guitarists all time and I absolutely love his work on the first 5 Metallica albums but wtf happened to him in Metallica? I specify Metallica cause he released Portals just last year and it was pretty creative and showed that Kirk can still compose and write great leads. But most of his recent work in Metallica has just been so boring and uninspired. The example you took with Fade to Black is so on the money. I consider Fade to Black as one of the best metal solos ever and even put it up there with Tornado of Souls in terms of just the emotions that those solos make you feel. I just don't get why Kirk would think it's a good idea to drawn such a masterpiece of a solo in wah. My issue with Kirk is that he abuses the wah. Even in the Master of Puppets days he was still using the wah but he was doing so in creative ways. I've heard multiple rumors that Lars encourages Kirk to just improvise his solos nowadays. That might explain why the same Kirk that came up with Portals sounds so uninspired in Metallica.
Love your guitar man! Best feeling and sounding guitar I'd ever played. Came so close to getting the kh2 but my parents didn't follow through lol oh well

This belongs to Mustaine
So you're telling me that they straight up play Blackened without the solo?!?! I mean seriously man it's one of Metallica's best solos.

He can't anymore lol. Just the truth, he stopped practicing a long time ago and the proof is comparing these solos, to the new ones.
He's scared of playing notes that are outside of the pentatonic scale that's why he won't play it
He only plays pentatonic wankery with shitton of wah these days. This Kirk is long gone, has been for at least a decade.
He’s gotten lazy over the years. Such a shame.

This is incredibly accurate! Awesome job. Even the tone is spot on.
No it's not. 0:11 and 0:48 are either sloppily played or just flat-out WRONG.
I really missed it when he played it back in 1989
Even if Kirk doesn't, he still has a special place in our hearts as a guitar player

Even Load and Reload have some solid ones. The first few bars of the solo on Memory Remains is just so good.
Nothing tops One for me. It’s just perfect timing for a solo like that.

Not necessarily on Battery. They take half a minute for James to do his 'are you alive' bollocks.
Lars' legs get too tired
Good point. James has been very clear about who runs the band in interviews.
I agree on that for battery. I love the are you alive part. That part in the song is amazing.
I’ve heard people say they can’t play that part anymore but that makes no sense. That parts easy
kirk cant play them, thats why the new solos are so terrible and messy, so it sounds the same when he does them live
that seamless transition from power chords to that lick to the whammy dive. perfection
