We raise our hands to knock because back in the olden times, every door had a doorknocker on it. As we moved through the 20th century and now the 21st century, those fell out of favor for doorbells, but we kept the old knocking.
It is about "Biomechanics". Your arm muscles are more relaxed when doing it upward. We act according to our body's instinct. When u do it downward your biceps extends more than it usually does, & triceps contracts giving more tension to frontal deltoid esp. it drags the weight of the whole arm. Also there are issue with the forearm muscle
Its because when we knock while lifting our hand, we move our hand towards gravity and it becomes easier but if do from below, it gets harder as we will be moving our hand against the gravity
