Pink Taco is my dream amp for dirty tones, literally the sound in my head when it comes to high(ish) gain. Both of these kick ass, but so is your playing
I’ve watched this video many times, it is one of my favorites you’ve done, along with the one on the JJ Junior. I hope you can do a video on the Friedman Runt 20 sometime. I really like the sound you get out of them with your playing style.
I love your vids, always great playing and great sounds. I owned many Friedmans, few JJ100, 3 x BE100 and 2 x pt20. I loooved pink tacos big time, so simple and sounds like a proper fancy big amp. Probably my favorite from Friedman.

Nice comparison! I think I'd pick the DS over the PT. The Taco sounds a bit more compressed. The DS is a bit more 'open' sounding. But, both are super nice.

That DS (and the Runt 50) are the best buys in the entire Friedman line.... KILLER amps! Great demo Euge! My problem is that, after hearing demo's of the Bogner Helios, I can't listen to another amp (aside from maybe an early SLO 100). It ruined me! LOL

If I have time since I need to return the Friedmans soon. And I’ve already returned the small Marshalls. And comparing PT to 800 2203 wouldn’t be fair for the PT😁.
I came *very* close to ordering a Pink Taco, but found a fantastic deal on a mint MK5:25 with a full mini 1x12 stack for 500 bones less than just the Friedman head. No way I could justify it after this deal. Plus that MKIIC+ circuit though ;) Been a Boogie fanboy since I bought my MKIV direct from Boogie in 93...
Would defo confirm with 20 watts being loud enough.....! I tried my own rig yesterday with master volumes up full and input at 4 with boss jb2 driving both of them (fender amp running 20watts approx and a vox ac15) with no attenuation and literally after 5 mins I had to stop playing due to loud ringing in my ears.....!
Ok, get that 20W 800 back for a PT comparison to it! That would be great! Which do you prefer? Fantastic video - the PT and DS really complement each other well. 👍
Fantastic sounding amps . Especially the PT . I use the BE OD pedal very similar sound at an afforablle price . But yes Friedman amps are imo unbeatable !!

You really have that mini DS dialed in with the SD-1. It sounds more defined to me but would have thought Pink Taco would have been way better for this kind of sound
Euge, I actually have both and love them. DS is great classic rock while the PT can go from 800 to down right nasty. Nice review as always and outstanding riffage.

Which Friedman amp model would be the best one to get for playing classic thrash metal from bands like Iron Maiden, Slayer, Megadeth, and Judas Priest and why? There are soooo many Friedman models that makes picking the right one very difficult.

It’s been a while since I’ve played with the JJ Jr but if I recall correct they’re quite the same but Jr has a separate clean channel that breaks up nicely when pushed and the OD channel has two switchable modes: the standard BE and the JJ mode which is basically a BE but voiced to Cantrel’s preferences.
I still prefer the jcm800 over these, even the 1watt with a sd1 is better then Friedman's amps, they sort f compete with Fuchs Train II which are monster plexus with a very tight bass like a 800, wish you demo these amps with your playing here...

Yeah those re-issues are great and really solid 👌. Unlike some of the original 800s where you never really know what you’re going to get. Most of them are really good but I’ve played also with not so impressive ones 😎. At one point I had five 2203s but sold three and the kept the ones I’ve had since late 90s; The Bad Boy and The Little Brother from ’85 💪.
@@EugeValovirta230V I watched rig rundown with Zack saying there was too much inconsistency, just after this Pete Thorn talking with David Friedman in another video said he had one marshall where they found out the treble resister was for the bass knob, the amp sounded totally different and no one understood why for years until they ran oscilloscope tests and found out the wrong pot was installed lol

Both amps sound phenomenal, Dirty Shirley a bit more to my taste...Pink Taco more aggressive and probably would stand in the live mix better. Great playing as always and I totally dig the EVH!

Shirley is Dirtey. I like my Shirleys dirty therefore I came to the conclusion that I prefer the dirty shirley over pink tacos. What? PT sounds great too though.
I’ve returned the small Marshalls back to store where I borrowed them but like I said on the video that PT is kinda like a modded 800 so it’s a bit more versatile but soundwise very close 😎👌.
I was wondering when these 2 mini amps would join the party! Adding in the JJ Jr. would make a good 3-way comparison. As great as these "bad boys" sound, I think I prefer the Marshall SC and SV...but I'm very much "old school". I like that the Marshall amps use EL34's, have a 20w/5w power selector and have a standby too. I'm looking forward to what you do next!
Yeah! I have no idea but I guess some EVH pickup since it came with the guitar 😎👌. For active pickups my favourites are EMG 81 or 57 for the bridge position and passive ones I really like the Duncan Custom that my LTD Phoenix has in the bridge position. They work on all types of guitars IMO 👌.
I'm looking for an amp that gets me closest to the VH I sound. What would you say is closer to that sound, Sv20 or pt20? Is there anything else I should consider short of buying a suhr sl68? which is too big, loud, and expensive for me.
As you probably know that Eddie used a Plexi on all VH albums until F.U.C.K. so that might be the amp but it has to be cranked to get that sound and since it doesn’t have a master volume it’s extremely loud so PT would be easier to ”handle” but I think pretty much any British style amp will do the job since the amps just amplify what’s ”feed” into them = the players sound. I mean nobody can sound like King Edward or anybody else than themselves and finding ones own sound is IMO much more important than trying to find someone elses sound. I mean I sound like myself no matter what gear I’m using so I just try to sound the best of me everyday 😎. But I know what you mean and I suggest to try out different amps and choose the one you like the most and the one that will help you get the sound you’re looking for.
@@EugeValovirta230V C'mon Euge. Both the sv20h and pt20 are plexi flavored and we both understand that much. I asked your opinion as I don't have the ability to play both amps, and knowing that you are also a van halen fan who has played both amps.
Man I can’t say with what amp you get closest to VH ’cos that’s not possible. I mean how could I know that? My all time favourite amp is JCM800 and with that and BOSS SD-1 I can get any sound I want. But I also now players that can’t get even close with 800 to what I got out of them. And some players can get awesome sounds and results from Mesa amps but I’ve never played a Mesa that made me ”satisfied”. Another example: John Sykes used mostly modded Marshall & Mesas and nowadays EVH III amps but I got those kinda sounds the best with my old JCM800 from 1984 by just playing like John (well actually playing like me ’cos we have a pretty similar style). I’m always quite careful to say people what they should and should not to buy ’cos what works for me might not work for them. On these videos I just try my best to show different amps and compare them so that viewers would get an idea about them. But everyone should / must always make the decisions themselves.

Great video Euge....... Friedman makes great amps, well made with great effect loops ---- He really has "something" in it for a 20 watt amp, its not just hype its the real deal.. The Taco is a bit more hot rodded with a touch more gain and the Shirley is a bit more loose and feel on the bottom end like a older Marshall.. BOTH are great amps you cannot go wrong with either amp its just your personal preference, but they are the REAL DEAL

Hi! The ones on the picture so usually it’s: Level around 4 o’clock, Tone around 1 and Gain around 8 o’clock. It depends what I’m looking for but if I boost an already overdriven amp they are around that.

Not sure. My go to amp to play anything is a good old Marshall JCM800 2203 💪.
That’s the PT-20, which is based on the JCM 800, ;which. Is the amp just about every metal band from the 80’s played.

As you probably know that Eddie used a Plexi on all VH albums until F.U.C.K. so that might be the amp but it has to be cranked to get that sound and since it doesn’t have a master volume it’s extremely loud so PT would be easier to ”handle” but I think pretty much any British style amp will do the job since the amps just amplify what’s ”feed” into them = the players sound. I mean nobody can sound like King Edward or anybody else than themselves and finding ones own sound is IMO much more important than trying to find someone elses sound. I mean I sound like myself no matter what gear I’m using so I just try to sound the best of me everyday 😎.
But I know what you mean and I suggest to try out different amps and choose the one you like the most and the one that will help you get the sound you’re looking for.

@@EugeValovirta230V C'mon Euge. Both the sv20h and pt20 are plexi flavored and we both understand that much. I asked your opinion as I don't have the ability to play both amps, and knowing that you are also a van halen fan who has played both amps.
Man I can’t say with what amp you get closest to VH ’cos that’s not possible. I mean how could I know that?
My all time favourite amp is JCM800 and with that and BOSS SD-1 I can get any sound I want.
But I also now players that can’t get even close with 800 to what I got out of them.
And some players can get awesome sounds and results from Mesa amps but I’ve never played a Mesa that made me ”satisfied”.
Another example: John Sykes used mostly modded Marshall & Mesas and nowadays EVH III amps but I got those kinda sounds the best with my old JCM800 from 1984 by just playing like John (well actually playing like me ’cos we have a pretty similar style).
I’m always quite careful to say people what they should and should not to buy ’cos what works for me might not work for them.
On these videos I just try my best to show different amps and compare them so that viewers would get an idea about them. But everyone should / must always make the decisions themselves.
Friedman BE mini just came out 30watts when are you getting it to try it out?

Great video Euge....... Friedman makes great amps, well made with great effect loops ---- He really has "something" in it for a 20 watt amp, its not just hype its the real deal.. The Taco is a bit more hot rodded with a touch more gain and the Shirley is a bit more loose and feel on the bottom end like a older Marshall.. BOTH are great amps you cannot go wrong with either amp its just your personal preference, but they are the REAL DEAL

Hi! The ones on the picture so usually it’s: Level around 4 o’clock, Tone around 1 and Gain around 8 o’clock. It depends what I’m looking for but if I boost an already overdriven amp they are around that.
