    Great review. Not all film cameras are meant to be tank-busters like (e.g.) the F2. I love my little EM and use it more often than my more 'pro' cameras (F2's included). As mentioned in the vid, it's light weight and, if you're not going into a war zone, perfectly adequate for most applications. Have it CLA'd every couple of years and it will reward you with a lifetime of reliable use.

    Great review. I have a lot of classic cameras and I love this one. It’s really beautiful, light and dependable. And it’s designed by an Italian car designer who designed the Ferrari 250GT, The Fiat 850 Spyder and the DeLorean!

    I had an EM in the early eighties when I was traveling around the US on my motorcycle. Most of the time I was shooting in manual (1/90) mode with 100 ASA film and using the sunny sixteen rule. Easy peasy. No batteries to think about. I’ve still got one of them.

      I was young then. I had my degree and my P.E. But the economy had gone to *&$*. No wife, no children, a few dollars in the bank, So I headed out across the country for about a year. Things that I saw on that trip no longer exist. No regrets

      @@TheDecguy That must have been quite the experience. I drove across Canada once in 2002 and I only wish I had a camera then, saw some amazing sights that are seared in my memory. Now that I think of it, I likely will do that again. Thanks for sharing 🙂👍

    Bought an EM in 1982, loved it. Just bought another off Ebay and I know I’ll love it again despite my digital and medium format cameras. Nice video by the way😍

    Thanks for the review. A friend recommended a Nikon EM to me years ago, and I was offended, because I’d heard it was considered a “girls camera.” I wound up getting a Pentax K1000, which is a good one to learn with, but I would’ve saved a lot of film early on, if I got the Nikon EM! I still have the K1000, but I did add an EM to my collection, and I love the compact size of it.

    This was my first camera, I bought it in 2004 when I was 18. Untill today the only viewfinders comparable to this one are from the FM2 and the Leica M3. I still use it today and love it, it's super fast, reliable and tiny. Great review!

    Nice review, thank you! Only one remark about the price - £250 at that time do not have the same value as they have today... It was maybe the amount of one salary or so... )) But they still keep good value of course. Thanks again!

    Great review - this was my first Nikon, bought second-hand in the late 80s. Later I bought a second when I was working as an informal journalist in the mid-1990s. Had the E series 24, 50 and 100mm lenses which covered practically everything I needed. Put some big rubber lens hoods on, and it looked the business. Crashed some good events with this set-up.

    You have an amazing Chilled voice! Love the review. I just bought a Nikon F3 body. I found out that (in Germany) it is cheaper to buy a Nikon EM with the 50mm lens than to buy the lens by itself. So now i got myself a EM -- and I love it.

    Totally chilled delivery - very pleasant🙌🏽. It’s a nicely-built (and NOT cheap-feeling) camera, with perfect ergonomics and easy and unobtrusive to take along with the digital or medium-format. Pancake 50mm is perfectly good for most situations, too - but being able to switch-out with any other Nikon AI lenses makes it truly versatile. Bulb-mode for longer exposures is fantastic. Maybe not for “gear snobs”, but as YOU imply - the results are only as good as the photographer! With this camera, the sky is literally the limit!! 😎🤜🏽🤛🏽

    I had one and I was sad when the film takeup mechanism died mid roll. But..its not like the aren't cheap to buy everywhere.
    If you ever see a 28m Macro - built by pretty much everyone, Bauer, Reikanon, Makinon, Remington, Baush & Lomb, Kalimar, Promaster--ALL those old names that rebranded cheap lenses...GET IT!! You will probably pay $5 and those are CRAZY sharp lenses. I've used them mostly on Nikon DSLRs, but of course on something like and EM it would be great. It was so good, I bought 3 more, whenever I see them, I get them! You'll know its the right one because they all have 28mm Macro on the face of the lens around the front glasss, and a scale on the side with either green, yellow, blue, orange or red obnoxious neon paint...

    awesome video, I have the same camera the battery that fits that is 2 Maxell LR 44 , that same battery fits my Pentax MX camera also ... the one thing you don't have to worry about this camera is the focussing it's up to you to focus , a lot of times when you use a newer up-to-date camera digital sometimes the focussing is off , it makes you a better photographer and it slows you down to taking a better picture , negatives are forever and digital can be deleted at any time if your PC ever crashes there gone , micro SD card ever corrupted it's ...gone baby gone

    The name is either a reaction to the galloping success of the Pentax ME, which was also a aperture priority camera.
    Nikon EM.
    That, or it’s Economy Model. :-)
    BTW The EM is designed by the same guy who designed the Nikon F3, the L35 AF and the Delorean, Giorgetto Giugiaro

    I have a Canon M50 and wanted to practice taking product shots and asked my mother about some old camera's she stored away. And she pulled out the exact same model and it's in mint condition. Definitely going to get some rolls of 35mm and make use of it. Are you using a 35mm film scanner or getting them developed?

    • @retrotechmall
      @retrotechmall  4 года назад +1

      Wow, lucky! I do develop my own film and scan them myself. Check out this episode I made on the topic: ruclips.net/video/clgz57zNcV0/видео.html

    Hi, I’m really enjoying your videos. I found you by searching for a review of the Nikon EM. Does the EM lock the exposure when you press and hold the shutter button, so you could then recompose? Thanks, Derek

    • @retrotechmall
      @retrotechmall  4 года назад +1

      Thank you. Unfortunately, no. However, it has a button that reduces the exposure by two stops when pressed for backlit conditions.

      Film Life Vlog No problem, I bought it now and I’m enjoying using it. Of course it’s also possible to turn the ISO dial as a way of compensating exposure.

      Derek Taylor Yes! That’s a trick that I used to do with my old OM-10 (aperture priority) - simple hack to get the results you want 👍🏽👍🏽😁
