This walk-through is very well done. For someone who has never touched an X universe game before, this made me comfortable tackling the steep learning curve. This is the hand-holding I was looking for to start this adventure.
Absolutely brilliant beginners tutorial series. i use it like an encyclopaedia. my only suggestion would be to have the subject matter of the episode in the title just to make it easier to find what you're looking for rather than having to open the video to check the description. Thanks Dave for all the help.
Thank you for putting these together. I've been wanting to get into X3 since I bought it like 4 years ago and the learning curve has chased me away every time. These have got me ready to dive in and actually accomplish something! :D
Although it is titled as a walkthrough rather than a tutorial, I highly recommend this series of videos for new players wanting to learn the game as it is recorded as if it is a tutorial. I just started X3TC and I was quite lost about what to do until I started watching these. Im only up to part 5 of this video series so far, but have found them excellent. Thank you CdrDave!
Oh god thank you so much for this Dave, I have owned the game for awhile and just got to firing it up, played 5 minutes and died mysteriously but my enthusiasm has not wavered. I tried tackling X3 reunion about 3 years ago and was mentally spaced. These videos help me understand things a hell of a lot better than that 64 page PDF of a manual and I look forward to getting into this series- Its always been a fascinating one. Thanks again! Matt
Never underestimated the tutorials. Even at advanced stage, which is where I am at this moment, I still find CdrDave's tutorial videos helpful. I watch them over and over not only to get the missing part, but to get the energy, fire, will or encouragement to play the game further with new ideas from vivid imagination to explore, experiment and accomplish goals. CdrDave's tutorial videos are the best yet beating William Ferrell's tutorial videos. Five stars for CdrDave!
Thanks for making these videos. It's just what i needed to get started, since i came into x3 completely fresh. it's easy to get overwhelmed, not really sure what anything does
Dedicating the time to create in-depth video tutorials does more than a manual ever could, especially with the high quality yours have. You've done an awesome job with these videos, I remember when I first entered the X series (X2: The Threat) and how large the learning curve was. On behalf of that memory, thanks for putting these videos up for people needing to learn.
I remember when you first started this series and the videos were very very short. I'm glad I was able to help you out with processing your videos. I feel like I've contributed. :-D
oh my god THANK you for these tutorial videos. im new to the x series and jumped straight into albion prelude and was like WTF! no guidance! your tutorial videos are VERY VERY helpful
Even though the content explored in this first video is stuff that can be considering mostly boring, you explained everything very well and in a proper concise manner. I will be watching the rest. Thanks for doing these.
This is very informative, I'm also a new player of x3 and found it very hard to start off without knowing what I was going to do. (I played Eve online, the multiplayer mmo very similar game) I will continue to further watch this tutorial series to get a better grasp of the game, I thank you for spending your time and effort to teach new players such as my self the fundamentals of this very complex yet brilliant game. :D
Just to echo others comments below, thank you for this series of videos. Purchased this game as a filler until i can get a decent enough rig together to play Elite Dangerous but after half hour of getting nowhere, threw in the towel. Watching this video, as well as parts 2 and 3 has me doing small scale trading runs. Not the most efficient or lucrative trade runs but your videos have given me more than enough to get the ball rolling and learn more as i go along. The combat side can wait as have always been more about trading/smuggling (several years mining and hauling in Eve online enough to get a freighter to run a small transportation business in the game) more than combat. Again, thank you for taking the time to put these together.
I am about to start playing this game to see if it is what Elite should be. Elite is great dont get me wrong it looks amazing, the sounds are incredible, the gameplay is crisp but it gets repetitive fairly fast, they are going to be releasing extra stuff through time but right now the game kinda looses its charm after a while.
Dave, thank you very much for these videos! I've linked tons of noobies and they have nothing but positive replies. If not for your videos, they probably wouldn't be playing X3. Oh and a secret thank you for the CLS/CAG videos, I wouldn't have a clue what to do without them. You are very kind to spend your time teaching us. Many thanks for that.
Great video, very concise and informative. It's always a pleasure to see someone in a community of gamers taking the time to help out others who are new =)
CdrDave, I hope you do not mind me posting this, but I thought it might help those who may be having trouble finding the links to all of the videos in order. It's your post on the Egosoft forums (how I found out about them) listing all of the Parts with their names / what they cover: forum.egosoft.com/viewtopic.php?t=297924 If you ever have the free time, it might be a good idea to include that link in each video's description (as well as the name / what's covered in the titles). Regardless, I want to say thank you. This is my first time getting into an X game (X3AP), and without your walkthrough, I would have been lost. Yeah, there are other guides and tutorials out there, but you have done a magnificent job with your's. Great, calm, clear voice and at a perfect pace, and you go in-depth with your explanations to a perfect level - Not too complex to keep up with, but not too simplified to make us feel stupid - and even give subtle reminders of earlier points so we're not scrambling back several parts to remember what this or that was. I greatly appreciate it, thank you, and take care!
I am very glad I was directed to your tutorials. I think this might finally get me into X3 again. Even for an old timer space sim lover like me this game is quite hard to get into. I am downloading your video tutorials and will burn them to DVD.
I just purchased this game on Steam. When I first started I was extremely overwhelmed by this game however it seems you do a great job at helping new players into this universe. Thanks for this!
Excellent, thank you. I've got the whole PDF manual printed out, I've got tutorials saved to my hard-drive, but this game is as obtuse as a brick wall to me. And I'm saying that as someone who spent years playing Dwarf Fortress. Either way, this is exactly what I was looking for.
Thank you for these guides, I picked up the game in the steam sale with the warning that it was a little over whelming when you first start and they weren't wrong! But thanks to these videos I feel like I'm making a solid start that I would never have been able to make without them.
This game is hard to get into. I still remember when I got x3 for the first time 10 years ago. I was like wtf is this game.. then I got into the game and I was like WTF should I DO .. and left it after 2 hours of not understanding anything. But the curiosity got to me and tried it again few days later, spet like a week to really understand it, researched on internet websites.. then when you finally get the game is one of the best.. Kept me glued to the monitor for hours.
This is great. I'm a seasoned X'er but when I first got reunion I used a paper walkthrough that was very much like this. Just the basics to get me going. Thank you for doing this.
finally have the opportunity to play this game. glad videos like this exist even though im lightyears late to the party. ive played sim games in the past but this is a lot to take in
Thank you sooo... so much for doing these tutorials. Every other tutorial just shows people using a bunch of hotkey's and I don't know WTF's going on lol. Cheers dude.
Just bought X Superbox from Steam for 40 bones and you're right - there's enough for months and years thanks for the help and I'll watch your vids while it downloads which might also be years lol
No. You can upgrade your ship just by buying stuff it can equip, or if you want a whole new ship, you either buy or steal it. You can switch in and out of ships you own more or less at will--you just have to either eject from ship A and get your pilot (as a floating astronaut) near enough ship B to enter it, or dock them both at the same station and switch over through the station menus.
Hi Dave, like many others - Thank you so much for these videos - I'm slowly making my way through them ( both watching and in X3 time too ) and they are invaluable ! They made my first experience of WTF ?! into a sensible, understanding and thoroughably enjoyable experience of X3TC. Thanks for making a lost pilot into a budding space hero ;-)
Thanks for the kind words. I really appreciate it and am very happy that I've been able to help others with this game. Now, to go lock myself in a room and help test a new product that shall not be mentioned :D
Thanks so much for the tutorials! I was hesitant on purchasing the game on Steam (despite its sale) because I'd heard about how steep its learning curve was. It seems like a great way to be introduced to the game..and w/o it, I probably would not have made the purchase.
I always sold my disco. and mercury. And bought a disco hauler. Then took some battle mission and follow missions. This always allowed for "paid discovering" and I also kept a sharp eye for signs of battle. This always let me pick up loads of expensive missles to sell. Like 20,000 credits a piece.
@xT3: IMHO It's very much worth it. X3TC and X3Rb are going to be very different games - and at that price - it's a steal. Even if you only enjoy it for a few weeks - it's deeper entertainment than most video games made today IMHO.
Aha! at last - NOW I can understand! Using the thick User Manual and your Vids all is becoming clearer... I have had TC since launch but it has been gathering dust since as(not having had any of the previous games) I couldnt get into it at all - so confusing. Now I know what all those little icons mean and how to do things that I could only dream about doing before. Will now reinstall and get Prelude. Thanks :)
There is a 'campaign' and a couple of nice rewards for following it through. I'll probably touch on starting the storyline as one of the final tutorials. There is a lot written about it in the forums.
This is going to help me out a *great deal*, always wanted to try these X games out and your tutorials are just right for this, thanks! Will you be covering X: Rebirth? Sounds like it'll be easier to get into but you never know! :P
Thank you - I don't plan on removing the videos so as long as they are still a help, don't mind at all if they're referenced on the forums. I am considering doing X3-R when it comes out, but making a series like this is so time consuming - we'll see.
This is great! I have had the game for a long a time now, but never really had the chance to try. I got the X Super Box collection on the Xmas sales and I'm gonna finally give it a try. I have a joystick I use with FSX, but for the short time I've played X3, I think mouse+keyboard is the way to go for me. Thanks for the videos!
That's kind of a loaded question - depending on who you ask. IMHO, you couldn't go wrong either way! But, since the logic of the gaming world is that the latest version is the best (*usually*), you couldn't go wrong starting right off with AP. X3 is so huge, even if you started with X3TC and jumped to Rebirth when it comes out - you wouldn't be living a deprived life :) Make a decision and then kiss your free time goodbye. X3AP would put you playing the latest game however... My 2c
No problem. If you listen to the beginning of video 2, I explain what I did. I didn't really plan these videos out before making them so I ended up doing a couple things out of order, but I think I always explained it. Make sure you watch at least 5 minutes into the 2nd video :)
Thanks. If you enjoy the series, feel free to comment on the thread at the egosoft forums :D There is a list of the entire series there that will be updated anytime I update any video.
@Nirnias Xtended In the xtended folder there is an uninstall program that will return your game to normal. Failing that go to your saved games folder and copy the games you want to keep onto a temporary location and completely reinstall the original game. Then put the saved games back in the folder (of course any games you saved during Xtended will not be playable once the mod has been removed).
The difference in the various game-starts is simply starting conditions for the game. The longer you play, the less relevant those start matters. As Bankrupt Assassin you don't have any money and only a combat ship, so no trading for you up front. You'll have to run missions or (the quicker method) steal a few ships to get started. I'm thinking about doing a BA LP while waiting for X3Rb to come out.
Buying it right now on steam for $39.99 which includeds.. X2: The Threat, X3: Reunion, X3: Terran Conflict, X: Beyond the Frontier , X: Tension, X3: Albion Prelude
Hey Dave! Great walktrough, even me with much experience could learn something is these walkthroughs ;) Ares you going to continue any Let`s Plays? Or are you (as most X-Players) just waiting for RB? Are you going to Lets Play this?
Thank you, so glad it helped! I agree with the table of contents. It's SO time consuming to make a video series to start with. Hopefully I'll do better with X3R with my lessons learned from doing this series. I know, I know, excuses!!!
3X Rebirth is coming out soon, so honestly, I would just start with AP if you're new to the game - unless you're a die-hard story fan. Then, if you've purchased the box, you could play through the whole series. I own the box, but honestly, I only play the latest game now as the sandbox style of play is much more fun for me.
TC has a more developed and longer mission story line and AP has some interface and gameplay improvements and a slightly different map. In my opinion I'd go with AP since there is a mod (on the official forum in the mods section) to put the original TC story line back into AP.
Having played EVE Online before, it really softened the massive blow of complexity a new-comer faces when first playing a game like this. Nonetheless, your videos were immensely helpful. I'd just like to ask: is what you can buy at stations all there is to this game? I mean the ships, upgrades, materials, etc.? Or do you have to get out there in the Universe to find the really awesome, high-end stuff?
Falling in love with this game, had a missing link in my game collection and this fills it, why didnt i buy this before?? great starting advice :-) Thank you
If you watch a little further, you will see that that startup only affects the beginning difficulty. Once the series gets into combat / mission / piracy, it's the same.
CdrDave once again your videos are still amazing. I would like to know since im a subscriber are you doing any current videos? I come back to your channels in search of more stuff but don't recall seeing anything current. And can i recommend for you to Sticky the steam X3 forums with your guides as they are a must for new users.
This has been a great way to learn the game thanks..I watched as many as possible before deciding to purchase the Super Box..Although I would like to be able to play and watch your videos at the same time. Is there a way to take the game out of full screen so it won't stop me from accessing my second monitor?
Oh derp, I just started AP after not playing since Reunion so I didn't realize how different they made everything. Or maybe it was like that in Reunion too, I honestly don't remember lol xD
Thank you very much for these videos. Helping me alot to get started. Loving the game so far. but I just wanted to know the difference between the startups. Do you know any good recources for me to check out to find out?
Unless you're a hardcore collector, I wouldn't really recommend getting them all. I bought the complete collection myself, but in all honesty, I only play X3TC/AP. IMHO, you can't go wrong with the war pack - you get X3TC and can grow into AP if you want to. That is enough to keep you busy for *months* of real time.
@ chegalha & lovewizard44: I honestly haven't had a chance to pour over AP yet (I really hope to this weekend - maybe even make a new vid.) As long as it hasn't changed, weapons works the same as in my later tutorial on weapons configuration / combat. Quick answer is press "G" to pull up config, click on slot 1 (or 2 or ...) and insert weapon. When firing, make sure you have the right bank selected (pressing 1-4?) and the weapons should be slightly illuminated on the bottom left of your scrn.
Also you can play rogue and take Ship return mission but sell the ship... I only do this if they give me an expensive ship to recover like a TS. ship. Usually a little later in the game... I find a used mercury for sale and soup. it up like you did and auto trade it while I do more exciting missions. And work up to TM/M4 class ships.
This walk-through is very well done. For someone who has never touched an X universe game before, this made me comfortable tackling the steep learning curve. This is the hand-holding I was looking for to start this adventure.
Thank you.
Best set of concise Tutorials I have found Dave. Thank you for the effort.....I send folks to them often....

I just got X3:TC and this helped so much. I was utterly lost when I began playing the game. Thanks for the videos.

Great video mate, i am a veteran x3 player with 900 hours under my belt and i still liked it soo much im going to watch your whole series
Thank you! I've been meaning to try X3 for ages now but never got too it until I found your tutorials!

Hey thanks for these videos... I got lost and now you showed me what to do and how to play...keep up the good work and keep the videos coming.
You have a very clear and soothing voice :D Great Tutorial!
Thank you for making these tutorials. I just got the X SuperBox and didn't know where to start, but these videos help a lot! :D
Thanks for the walkthough you made me get a huge jump start of understanding the game concept.
Just to echo others comments below, thank you for this series of videos. you think you late? im 4 years later than you lol that is already late
Finally discovering the beauty of Terran Conflict's intricate systems thanks to this
Perfect. After watching several lesser tutorials on RUclips, only NOW I feel I can try out this game! Thank you so much.
I never noticed till just now. The terrain on the planet in the starting sector, they just glued North America to Asia!
Thank you sooo... so much for doing these tutorials. Every other tutorial just shows people using a bunch of hotkey's and I don't know WTF's going on lol. Cheers dude.

Wonderful walkthrough! Well made and so helpful. Thanks mate!
I know right!? I instantly got buyers remorse but thanks to guides like this one that feeling has passed :)
Thank you ! Youare doing an amazing job ! I was lost in this game... and a little bit confused... but now, I see the light lol !
12 minutes of glory lol, much better than 2. Well done!
There is a 'campaign' and a couple of nice rewards for following it through. I'll probably touch on starting the storyline as one of the final tutorials. There is a lot written about it in the forums.

Most certainly still in development and progressing. Just give it time...until it's done correctly.
This is fantastic. Great tutorial with perfect quality! X3 looks a tiny bit less complicated now.:o)
Great walk through. Helps a lot. Thanks :)
Thanks. If you enjoy the series, feel free to comment on the thread at the egosoft forums :D There is a list of the entire series there that will be updated anytime I update any video.
You're about to get an influx of new subscribers thanks to the humble bundle
Entertaining and informative.

Hey Dave! Great walktrough, even me with much experience could learn something is these walkthroughs ;)
Ares you going to continue any Let`s Plays? Or are you (as most X-Players) just waiting for RB? Are you going to Lets Play this?
Bout time somebody made something like this!
Thank you, so glad it helped! I agree with the table of contents. It's SO time consuming to make a video series to start with. Hopefully I'll do better with X3R with my lessons learned from doing this series. I know, I know, excuses!!!
Watching this series while my game is downloading (Steam -75% off wooohooo) . Its very helpfull for a noob like me :D.
@Jellybeantiger: It's really easy, and a lot of fun, once you get the basics down...
That was my original plan. Time permitting, I will still follow up on X3Rb.
very good tutorials! thanks for the effort
Thanks for posting this. Now I know I should just continue playing Eve Online instead.
Falling in love with this game, had a missing link in my game collection and this fills it, why didnt i buy this before?? great starting advice :-) Thank you
Thanks. My plan is to continue with RB. We'll see :)
It depends on your default settings friend. Go to your settings and check hotkeys. From my memory it's either a num pad key or an f* key.
Thank you so much, great help.
Haha, beast? Maybe not. I just made the videos I wish I had when I started with X3. So glad it helped you!
@Hardscript: I'm humbled :) Glad the vids helped!! Wish I had them when I started lol.
Thank you for these.
@Mariner: Thanks! Glad I could help a little.
I've read that TC is much better than Reunion in that it offers much needed features and is easier to get into (for the beginner).
