Do you think this is a case of building a road through the side of a hill and then not building adequate retaining structures to prevent land slippage? From what I've seen around NZ, the nature of the islands land mass means it must have many roads built on steep hill and mountain sides. This is difficult to master especially when you have massive rain fall
Seems the retaining wall held out well... Feeling bad for those poor trees falling victim to the landslide. (no pune intended) Unfortunately clay doesn't hold up well to continued rainfall and will quickly become liquefied. Not much else to say really might cut off the comment here lol 😆😂
Might be time to put a few hundred cubic metres of shingle under the new Nelson library.. say enough to raise the floor level to 6 metres above normal surrounding land levels?

@@nzbrotrev9028 You're right, there's nothing new about slips (though slips with the consistency of yoghurt might be!). But Nelson getting one metre of rain in four days is certainly new, and the way things are going weatherwise, that could indeed become the 'new normal' throughout much of New Zealand. And where these 'rivers of rain' strike is rather like random artillery fire - it's Russian Roulette - and when one does inevitably hit Wellington, the carnage created by one metre (or more) of rain will be on par with a major earthquake ... what's more, they'll hit with far greater frequency than earthquakes.
