Everybody has their own top 40 greatest catches. This is in no way top 40 in my book especially number one by Indian player Shikar Dhawan and I am an Indian cricket fan! The list is also very strange because they have showcased a lot of England and Australian fielders and left out so many great catches from Indian subcontinent then to make it even worse they put a very average catch by an Indian player at number one, may be to balance things out.

    • @VijayThakurMD

The England cricket team fans are known as, “The Barmy Army”. There no rude chanting, in the crowd at least, just a few little dances when the team scores and holding up banners, etc., but there’s a tradition of dressing up in costumes with your mates, drinking beer and everything stops for tea and sandwiches at 4pm. Stopping for tea is a tradition that spreads to small villages, although younger people don’t play so much village cricket nowadays. There’s loads of different types of cricket now. The traditional international lasts for up to five days - the teams wear white. Now there’s one day cricket where the teams wear ‘pyjamas’ - different colours for each country.

The thing that adds to the difficulty of diving catches is that generally your elbows are going to hit the ground hard when you land and the ball can just fly out of your hand without a glove/mitt to hold on to it.

The fielder with the gloves is the wicket-keeper. It's like your baseball catcher and he/she is the only fielder permitted to wear gloves. The keeper needs some protection because he has to take the catches, anything the batsmen miss, and a most of the throws in the from the other fielders; it's a lot of wear and tear on the hands from a very hard ball.

You really need to watch "Cricket Explained for Baseball Fans" from "Sports Explained" IMHO one of the best ways to get a basic understanding of the rules, it will not explain some of the finer points.
The first thing most Americans (including yourselves) comment on is that most of the catches are 'barehanded' this is because the only member of the fielding team who wears gloves is the 'wicket keeper' (who does a job somewhat like the 'catcher' in Baseball).

The only fielder permitted to wear gloves is the wicket-keeper who is equivalent to a catcher in Baseball. He or she generally takes more catches than any other fielder, and also has to take any balls that pass the batsman and also the great majority of throws in from fielders around the playing area. They normally wear the outer 'gauntlets with a thin pair of textile or soft suede leather gloves inside to absorb sweat and provide extra cushioning. They are an indispensable member of any cricket team and can be match winners in their own right.
I was a wicket-keeper for 25 years or so and can say that without hand protection you would not be able to do the role for long because of accumulative injuries to fingers, thumbs, and hands in general. Even with gloves they tend to end with injured joints, arthritis and even deformed fingers after years of service.

The fans often go for a comedy or funny approach, check out the balmy army, or the richie benauds 500 fans turning up at the Sydney Cricket Ground all with his distinctive look, right down to his mop of grey hair. A tribute to the now deceased commentator and ex Australian captain. Going to the cricket is an EVENT.

This video is from England cricket board. They only have rights to the matches that happens in England. So these top 40 catches are definitely not the best 40 catches in cricket.

India is playing against westindies in lauderhill, Florida (Central Broward regional park stadium turf ground) on 6th and 7th August next week .
And I'm a cricket fan and expecting a high scoring game in one of that two games to be played in Florida.
And trust me you will be entertained for atleast one game of those.

USA does have a national team.
BTW the first ever international cricket match in 1844 was between USA and Canada. Canada won.

There is indeed a US national team, and though not highly-ranked, they aren't near the bottom of the world either. And since it looks likely that cricket will be in the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles, you'll probably have a chance to see them!

There are many great international teams, but the one they all need to beat is England! Never easy! England Versus Australia is always great cricket . Australia are always hard to beat. It is a very ancient sport now with man Test matches of legendary tales to tell.
