- San Diego, California is home to one of the busiest passenger rail lines in the United States. In this video, we take a visit to America's Finest City and the surrounding areas to see train traffic on the rail corridor here that I captured in late 2020 and early 2021. We'll see Amtrak, Metrolink, and Coaster passenger trains along with a few BNSF freight trains and some scenes of the San Diego Trolley. 2021 was an important transitional year for the Coaster commuter train and we will see the classic F40 locomotives hauling commuter cars in the original paint scheme as well as the brand new Siemens built Chargers in the newest Coaster Livery. There's lots to see in this video, so let's head on down to San Diego to see some trains in the SoCal sun!

Great memories. Remember my first trip to San Diego and being blown away seeing people with their beach chairs,etc waiting patiently to cross tracks to beach.San Diego sta. Is a beauty.
1. My favourite 3:05, it ended up making the train out of Piedmont ( the Piedmont location is North Carolina) the pacific Surfliner
2) The EMD F59PHI we're in storage but remained in service[ about in the coaster commuter in North county transit city district ]

It’s called a Sprinter hybrid rail train
That makes sense, I do like the looks that it has
This train that you saw, is being use also in Europe, in Greece, they build hybrid rail out of 5 cars adding also the pantograph
I see them pretty daily in Romania
And also theyre not in the greatest shape you can imagine
It's derived from a diesel railcar that's made for branch line use in Europe. Germany, Denmark, Austria, Hungary, Bulgaria, Romania and Greece have them.

Some really great shots here! It’s hard to believe much has changed from when I started railfanning back in 2013. Although I’m not on the Surfline as much anymore, it’s still great to see all the upgrades as I know I would have better rides that are waiting to come.

Mostly all of them have been stationed or placed at the 12th & Imperial yard. Only about 13 of them left in service

Wow! I used to watch the trains coming in and out of Oceanside. Brings back a lot of memories of all of San Diego. Also would see them going through Camp Pendleton.

0:29 the repaint is like ACE 3307, coaches and sc44 3111.
The new swoopy aerodynamic locos are cool, but I always like how the cab cars look super intimidating like a moving wall haha. I haven't been paying much attention to trains recently, have they phased out the P42? I use to see those all the time on the Pacific Surfliner.
Since they are still running Surfliner trains on a reduced schedule, they don’t need as many locomotives, so the P42s have all been returned to Amtrak for now. Thanks for watching!

Really excited for the midcoast expansion. I'm sure you'll get some good shots when it's in regular service. I often ride the bike trail between old town and UCSD and love to see the coaster/surfliner pass by.

I went to San Diego like 3 months ago it was amazing! I saw an Amtrak Surfliner SC-44 and a Coaster SC-44 with the new cars! I was so happy!

It's been overhauled as of July 15, but it didn't re-enter service until July 29

They were probably deadheading to pick up equipment. Plus, having the additional cab car makes it better and safer for a longer run.

Another outstanding video Mike. The old 645 diesels sound great on my car speakers. I noted that the Siemens locos hardly make any noise.

I believe they are the exact same model. They were built at the Siemens plant in Germany.

On 2:21 is the F59PHI the last locomotive on the Coaster fleet?
They are barely used right now maybe in 2022 F59PHI will stop being used.
3001 and 3002 are both still around but have not been used much since the F40 retirement. They're on standby I think.
Not officially supposed to be retired until next year.

another day in COASTER
Everybody in San Diego and Oceanside, The 2 beach cities in California, are shocked to see the Coaster train models have completely changed, A long time ago, They looked very old, So that’s when they decided to have a demand of making changes on the Coaster trains, The interior of the new Coaster model is very comfortable. That’s all I could say since I haven’t went to one single Coaster train, Once. The only train I used to go to is a Sprinter train. Which is still a good train for people to travel in. Also 1 last thing. In my country, When people air travel, They travel in an airplane from just American Airlines, But in Mexico, They have more than an ordinary airline. Like Volaris, AeroMexico, and other airlines. (This is the longest comment I ever wrote down. So go with it)
Fun Fact - Mike’s intro is not from 2105, it’s from an Amtrak p42 heritage (I think the P3 one)

I hope they soon start overhauling the Coaster Cab Cars for real and not just wrapping them.
Most of them are being retired so the ones that are wrapped will be phased out next year or so
They may be son. 2310 has not been spotted in a few months.
