Perankan (mostly) did not marry the local Malays. They just adopted some of the Malay culture and traditions, and spoke a mixture of Chinese and Malay languages, but they kept their Chinese culture at best they could. Babas and Nyonyas are historically referred to Melaka Peranakans. Babas and Nyonyas are Peranakans, but not all Peranakans are Babas and Nyonyas. For example, east coasts Peranakans are not Babas and Nyonyas.

There were some interracial marriage with local Malays but most kept the marriage within themselves but adopted Malay language into their lingo with sprinkling of Hokkien (eg honorifics) and blended Malay cuisine into their culinary preparations. .
