great review, worthy of laudation. however, i will say that i prefer the 1985 mix, as the echo feels about just enough to really let the instruments fill the mix, especially with dagmar's vocals. however, we can both agree that "in praise of learning" is one of the most brilliant albums to come out of from the past 50 years, and it will continue to be so until the end of time.

This is great, I'm surprised to see a video on this. Living in the Heart of the Beast is definitely about the rise of class consciousness and proletariat revolution. They were avid Marxists and the lyrics reflect that. I actually disagree with the point about them thinking that the average man couldn't do anything but watch, I think the contrary, the average can watch if he wants change. I don't think they would agree that war is a product of human nature, they would regard war as a product of domination and the established system, whether it be feudalism, slavery, or capitalism. Also Slapp Happy is crazy I can't help but hear Kate Bush and then for them to do this is insane. Great video!

Yep. Many of the members of Henry Cow were Marxists, so they don't really believe in human nature as an essential, transhistorical trait. War, like you mentioned, is more of a result of class domination. At least, according to their perspective.
Also, while the video correctly mentions Henry Cow's focus on class-wish more people would tbh-I would argue that that focus was more on the abolition of class than class mobility.

@@TockTockTock yeah definitely more abolition of class. I’ve read capital volume one since I post that comment and am reading it again. It’s so much much better the second time around, the fetishism of the commodity and it’s secret, even from a literary perspective, is one of the best things I’ve ever read.

@@fuzzydunlop4513 I've only ever read a few chapters from Capital. I read one every now and then and make sure to take extensive notes. I plan to read more soon, but I still need to transfer my notes to my zettelkasten. But yeah, Capital is a work of genius. I honestly wish more Marxists would actually read it-and Marx in general really. Anarchists too.

A lot of people really didn't like them because they were openly Communist, as was Robert Wyatt of Soft Machine.

Great video, but I think you're totally wrong on IPOL being a 'true collaboration' between the bands. Ignoring 'War', which is a hold-over from Desperate Straights, the album is almost entirely free of contributions from Peter Blegvad. Firstly, Hodgkinson hated his proposed lyrics for 'Living in the Heart of the Beast' and felt that he was too politically cynical for the project. Furthermore, Blegvad was not on the same level of technical ability of the other musicians (something he was aware of) but rather than trying to accommodate him, he was basically musically ignored by Frith and Hodgkinson - the former didn't write him a part on 'Banners', and the latter gave him parts for 'Beast' that were obviously outside of his comfort zone. Moore was held in higher regard because of his tape/electronics work, and gets spotlighted on the improv tracks, but this wasn't an element of the Slapp Happy style at all. HC were effectively collaborating with Anthony Moore the composer, not the SH member. The treatment of Dagmar is similar - she's not using her Slapp Happy vocal style, but instead being pushed in new directions.
Neither of the albums are really successes of collaboration, but IPOL is definitely more of a failure in this regard than DS. Aside from 'War', there really is no attempt to include Slapp Happy's art pop style in the album. I'd really recommend reading Benjamin Piekut's book on Henry Cow, where this stuff is explored in detail.

I have a few nitpicks (horrible way to start a comment, I know), but this is still an excellent video. Love that you've uploaded videos about artists/bands like Henry Cow, Daniel Johnston, and cLOUDDEAD-it's exactly what I would be discussing if I were a RUclipsr. Definitely don't regret subscribing.
Anyway, to anyone who's reading this comment, I *highly* recommend reading the book on Henry Cow that was recently published. It's incredibly thorough and analytical-working with a body of research that took years to compile. It's easily one of the best books I've ever read about experimental music.

While I liked the video quite a lot, and I highly respect the fact that you chose them as a topic, since they are very hard to listen to and rarely mentioned in the progressive rock world, I gotta correct a few things. Slapp Happy aren't a krautrock band, at least I don't see them as such. Dagmar is the only german in it. Anthony Moore is english and Peter Blegvad is american. Plus, they weren't really popular and didn't leave a mark on the german music scene, so I don't really see them as krautrock at all. Yes, the fact that technically you can tie the Canterbury Scene to Krautrock through Henry Cow and Slapp Happy, I don't think this link serves more than just a fun fact that doesn't really reflect reality. Also, I don't really know how much of a collaboration was. Yes, Dagmar does sing on 3/5 songs, but aside from that, Anthony and Peter are only on War and Living in the Heart of the Beast (if wikipedia is to be trusted anyway), so I don't think that we ever got to a true collaboration between the 2 bands. Anyways, great video. It's nice giving Henry Cow the youtube video treatment, since something like this could actually open the doors to new fans, sweetening the more pretentious aura that seems to loom over them. Unrest and In Praise of Learning have been posted by a no wave channel, so it's pretty nice to see that and this video. The first years of Virgin Records were amazing, goddamn.

Syfoll I appreciate the support! Since Slapp Happy formed/recorded most of their stuff in Germany I consider them a German band generally. I don’t think I called them a krautrock band so much as I called them an art pop band that had ties to the krautrock scene because of the musicians they had ties to (all tho I made this vid a while ago and don’t remember exactly what I said so it could’ve been worded better/the info could’ve been wrong or misleading so I appreciate u bringing it up). The spine and back of the vinyl has both Slapp Happy and Henry Cow listed as the artist so I think it was intended as a collab even if it is more Henry Cow than Slapp Happy, and still feels more collaborative to me than Desperate Straights (tho I do understand ur pov and think it’s a valid opinion as well). Tbh, I just like this idea of bands that were formed in 2 different areas that were arguably at their creative underground peaks in the 70s as being the ultimate album to define that era of that sound. It’s kinda just how I like to view the album even if the sounds of Krautrock aren’t entirely reflected within the album or even the band that helped make it. After all, the great thing about experimental music is that it’s unpredictable and unique. Anyway (pardon my rambley ass response) thx for reaching out and making things more clear and I’m happy u enjoyed the vid 👍👍
