6:55 THANK YOU. I went most of my life thinking I hated turn based RPGs because I played Pokemon Leaf Green as a kid and got extremely bored with it. It wasn't until Yakuza 7 forced me to play a good turn based JRPG when I realized that I had no problem with them, Pokemon was just the worst example possible. While I regret not seeing the light earlier, I'm glad I at least got to understand the genre before the release of Super Lesbian Animal RPG, or else I wouldn't have been so enthralled by the title alone.
I almost had the same experience as you but with Persona. I tried playing Pokemon back when I was a kid, got bored by it and thought all turned-based rpgs were boring. It was with the release of Persona 4 Golden on PC that I thought "why not it's $20" and actually played a good turn-based rpg, and I now like the genre.
"Just turn the game on stupid!" "But also, here's a 40minute video you're gonna watch instead of dealing with that backlog. You're welcome!" Ty Captain. I'll play FZero 99.
12:21 You’ve said the exact thing that I was thinking but could never put to words. If stuff like Fire Emblem Engage is what people want nowadays then I’m starting to seriously reconsider my love for gaming. I seriously hope no future games in the series are like this.
13 Sentinels is absolutely also my favorite game I played this year. The most impressive thing about the English voice acting is that it was all done from home because it was during lockdown. It's amazing how good it all came out.
I got a voice acting background and have to say that Yuri Lowenthal's voice has been such an inspiration for me since the Prince of Persia Trilogy. His performance in Spidey 2 is amazing. The vocal training was really tough, sometimes without noticeable results for months but actors like him and the late Kevin Conroy are a great impulse to not give up. You almost saw me as Leon in those new RE games :)
>mild nier automata spoilers >look inside section >major nier automata spoilers in all seriousness good video. automata and 13sar in particular are two games i played for similar reasons (THE COMMON ROSTER OF ENGLISH JRPG VOICE ACTORS BABY I LOVE THOSE GUYS) that changed me fundamentally and i’m so glad they’re both on the list. they’re in the same corner of my brain too! similarly i didn’t even know what 13sar gameplay was like when i bought it either so that section is so relatable maybe to repay this kindness i’ll play f-zero 99 so you guys get a new game
I wonder what will be your opinion of Baldur's Gate 3, because honestly it is the only game on the past 20 years of playing that I actually don't want to finish it and not exactly for being bad, but for actually don't want to end.
Why does Jill in FFXVI have the same haircut as tifa, rinoa, and garnet.... Is that like the default Final Fantasy Girl Hair. Yuna Terra and Panelo are such a treat.
0:59 Thank you...the "backlog" is only as real as you make it out to be. I think the real issue is people just have serious FOMO and wanna consume everything fast to be apart of the convo even if that means harming their first go at something. lmao
Unicorn Overlord is fr amazing. Ive been playing the demo since it dropped and im still playing it. I hope you try it Astronaut and make a video about it. Alright thats my time, im going back to finish my 2nd playthrough of the demo
I absolutely loved FFXVI until about 60% of the way through. Everything with Clive and his family and his rivalry with Hugo was amazing, but once the story became about Barnabas and Ultima my eyes would glaze over in every cutscene and I could not force myself to care about the story. Plus things like the extreme bloat of mediocre sidequests and Jill’s constant sidelining got worse and harder to ignore. It sucks because FFXVI had so many amazing ideas and it executed most of them incredibly, but there’s only so much you can do when your two main villains are so bland.
It also annoyed me how despite this was a story about how bearers were supposed to be freed, they barely play an important role. They exist just to die within the story and provide angst for our human and eikon main characters
"Play F-Zero 99" Between work and college, my backlog is haunting and very daunting. I think since the middle of 2023 and until this post I haven't purchased any games but one. I was that guy that made really good money and just bought games to buy them, but the complications of turning them on or even being overwhelmed annoyed me. Lets not make this about me and make it about the video you made instead. I love videos like these. True honest humor and opinions on games that made a great or terrible impression on you throughout the year. I listen to various folks impressions on games of the year or whatever may have been trash. Sure, first week impressions will always help and youtubers will cover them, but there's something more appealing about a greater look at the game half a year later or a year later. Is it as bad as people make it out to be. Was there a future patch that answered all of the concerns and made it better than what we thought at launch. These videos will always help me add more games on my own list to try out. Even if it means I finally play it 5 years later. I thought I was subscribed to you this whole time. I'm fixing that right now. Keep up the good work Captain Astronaut.
You know? Pokémon Scarlet is my 4th favorite game of all time but I couldn’t disagree with a lot of your points lol. I adore this series and even the ones people dislike I think are great! Yet this is the first one where I can look at people’s complaints and say, “I disagree, but you’re not wrong”. Pokémon Z looks really good but if anyone doesn’t wanna play these games anymore I understand
28:40 Yeah, this is literally the ONLY game, where I think having more diverse characters would legitimately make the game racist. It's very hard to do a story like that one respectfully, and I think they barely managed it as is.
You should definitely play Resident Evil 4 Remake. It took everything that was good about the original and modernized it into one of the best games of 2023.
You should definitely play the RE 4 remake asap. It massively fixes your main issue, and instead has some of the most satisfying combat I've ever played.
i remember when the spiderman games came out and everyone was complaining about the mj stealth missions, and idk how, but i knew that everyone was wrong about it, that the stealth missions were fine at worst and I'd probably enjoy them. so thanks for confirming something i somehow someway already knew. also i agree play f-zero 99 people, play f-zero 99.
Can I just shout out Mr Spaceman for looking goddamn razor-blade-sharp in that 3 piece suit for a ten second Ace Attorney gag? (plus the tiny Objection badge) Anyway time to play F-Zero 99
Dude, your videos are so much fun. I'm a huge fan. Please keep up the good work. Also, you definitely have me wanting to play F Zero 99 again. I wonder if it's dead at this point.
I think if the idea of interwoven stories and slowly learning more about characters, especially if it's not necessarily in order and feels like a puzzle, is interesting to folks, they should try the rhythm game cytus II. The price for the main characters and full story for them is like a whopping $2 and I honestly feel like if the gameplay and storytelling is interesting to you it's worth the money to shell out for the secondary characters when there's a bundle deal. The story managed to leave me in tears several times, and I feel like not nearly enough people are aware it exists.
Sick video I'm gonna play F-ZERO 99. But actually thank you for these very level-headed and reasonable takes, I don't think I enjoyed Live A Live as much as you but I'm so glad you liked 13 Sentinels. Part of why I never say anything to people about it when I recommend it is that I fel like the less you know about it going in the more you will enjoy it. Anyway I'm gonna have to try Nier Automata on the Switch. Your recommendations are appreciated as always Mr. Spaceman.
Mr Spaceman, you need to play BG3! C'mon! It fits so well with the "stories that can only be experienced through videogames" theme you said today. Also play FZERO 99!
I really liked Spiderman 1 and Miles but Spiderman 2 was honestly a downgrade in my opinion. The gadgets were made homogenised and samey, the healing requires a full bar instead of spending what's there and the story was incredibly safe, it lacked the oomph the previous two games had. Loved Final Fantasy 16 tho. I'm so happy we're getting more Japanese games that puts actual effort into the localisation and direction in the English voice acting and cutscenes. It did a lot for me.
Not sure I agree that FF16 really innovated. FF16 is just straight up FF14 with super basic action combat and spectacular visuals. A few open zones where you chase quest markers (Like FF14). MSQ goes on until it puts you in an instance (FF14). Dungeons are straight lines with no exploration and a few bosses (FF14). Huge chunks of the story feel like padding (FF14). Maybe the combat innovated, but its not really doing anything other games haven't done better already. When I imagine FF innovation, I think of the Sphere Grid, Materia, Class swapping or even the Junction system. I don't dislike it because its not "Final Fantasy" I just dislike it because its sorta mid. I actually really enjoy action games and had high hopes for FF16, but for how simple the combat is, the game should have been half the length.
I lost it at the iHeartAlphinaud username, jokes are as great as always. Definitely found myself agreeing with a lot here. I love that you focus more on having fun with games while not taking things too seriously. It's a breath of fresh air. And nobody forget to play F-Zero 99!
16:53 It's not huge but the community is still fairly active and joining a grand prix at the start will usually have a nearly full lobby. Thankfully the game works just fine even when there is only 15 - 20 actual players in a race. They added some "secret tracks" but the game would be more active if they actually added fully new tracks on a semi regular basis. Anyway PLAY F-ZERO 99 GODDAMMIT!
okay i literally CHEERED when 13 Sentinels came on AFTER TOTK--truly the most BASED decision possible!! Man. So glad you enjoyed 13 Sentinels, it's an incredibly strange game that is hard to market but is one of my favorite games and particularly stories of all time. That branching narrative had me saying "WHAT!" as many times as you lol!
FF16, for me, just felt more like I was playing a spin off of FF14. A lot of the game, outside of the combat, just kind of felt like the MMO; the OST definitely just made me feel like I was listening to FF14's music again, which is bad per say, but most FFs have always had their OWN kind of style of music which made them even more memorable. Can't tell me that if you go back to FF9 or FF7, you listen to their epic battle tracks, or their somber tracks, that they don't automatically make you think of those key moments. Everything about FF16 just kept sending me back to FF14, and eventually, I just kind of stopped playing it, personally just miss the old stuff where there was a BIT of thought behind battles; now it just feels like "wail on the boss till it's staggered to get bigger numbers". Definitely a visually pleasing game, for sure though.
I have a friend who is a Fire Emblem enjoyer who passionaey argues Engage is better than Three Houses in every way, story wise too. His argument is that there is more entertainment to be had with the hammy tropey story of Engage vs Three Houses attempt at an epic story which didn't land at all due to weak chatacters and overall plot (in his opinion).
You should ask him what he thought of the "hammy" moments like the escape chapter where everyone's rings are stolen, how Alfred is terminally ill, and how Panette holds resentment towards her neglectful parents.
Liked and subscribed just for someone mentioning and enjoying 13 Sentinels as much as I did. Great video. 13 Sentinels might be my game of the year for this year.
Actually, the fandom consensus on Live A Life is that the Western chapter is the best. Your finger was absolutely on the pulse for that one. They'd *really* get mad at you for not putting the Near Future chapter at the bottom.
Aaah disco elysium is on your list ?? Please please please if you do end up playing this game this year, can you do a quick review of it ? Would love to hear your thoughts on it !!
Also please if you're bothered by the switch version, I would advise to just pirate the game on pc. It's really easy to get, and nowadays the original devs don't even gain any profit from the game anymore sooo
Pokemon in 2022 really girated between one of the best designed games they've ever made and the worst built game they've ever made huh. Can't say that makes the future brighter or darker than the past so now im just sitting here like "we'll see how it is."
I don't have Switch Online so won't be playing F-Zero 99 sorry. but correct opinions as always, mr spaceman. My favourite games this year aside from TotK were SMT3 HD Remaster and Silent Hope. I don't see people talk much about the latter and it is just a simple dungeon crawler, but it's also just... fun. It's not "cozy" in an inane way, and the plot is pretty thin, but the combat is simple to pick up while having a lot of depth in how you can customise your characters to suit your own playstyle. When you hit a mushroom with your weapon it makes a "boing" noise and bounces back in a really satisfying way and I like that kind of shit. I want more people to play it because I would love for the team who made it to get to do something on a more grand scale.
LOVED your segment on Final Fantasy XVI! I was laughing through the whole thing! Agree on pretty much everything (oh no... am I turning into Jill?! Noooo!) Anyway thank you xD
Gotta be honest i love FF16 its my favorite in the series probably tied with a few but Clive was an amazing character so even with its flaws the kaiju eikon battles were awesome and the characters were just so good
Spiritfarer just ruined me. In a really good way. I was dealing with a loss when I played it and everything about it made me cry, but in a really just ... cathartic kinda way. Do recommend.
"Leon Kennedy is so bad at everything... he gone end up like his Great uncle John F." BRO WHAT😂😂 I keep forgetting you got melanin and then you say some on of the most melanated statements i ever heard. Right up there with "He need some milk!" Happy February my guy.
7:30 this is tea because of ALL the games to "prioritize competitive play," POKÉMON?? THE CHILDRENS RPG??? I'd much rather a fun gimmick that adds to the single player experience than prioritize competitive. are z moves and dynamax stupid? yes. but are they fun? YES
Both fun iterations on the battle system and shiny new toys for casuals can be implemented, but Gamefreak (or TPC, whoever's in control) doesn't want to compromise
Seeing spiritfarer come up however briefly was wild to me. I think I have the unpopular opinion that I did not enjoy that game, but I also recognize that a big update came out after I finished it and I just never came back to it, so maybe they improved what I hated? Idk I just did not have fun with that game in the second half
Holy moly, that's gotta be the most vitriolic response to scarlet/violet I've ever heard. Can't say it's unwarranted though, as much as I absolutely loved it, that is mostly because I'm lenient towards its inherent flaws and wasn't hugely bothered by the framerate. And I'll stand by my assessment: a lot of the actual design is pretty great, the open world is nice to bum around and overall way better than the usual linear worlds in pokemon games, the artstyle is a nice shift from usual fare and mostly looks alright, the story is one of my favourites in Pokémon and the music is absolute fire, but all the bugs and performance issues are completely unacceptable and really drag the game down. tldr the pokemon guys really need to learn how to optimise their damn game. And probably more time, all this rushing for the christmas release hurts their games to such a painful degree.
I still liked scarlet better than the older pokemon games. (not that its a good game) I personally enjoyed it more bc it lacks most of the hand-holdy bs that is rampant in every pokemon game. I didn't have problems with the graphics, low framerate and/or bad rendering doesn't bother me. I'd say SV is the best mainline pokemon game on switch at least.

The Metroid Dread slander is unforgivable Mr. Spaceman.
5:08 yeah it was this game called Pokemon violet
Congrats on sponsor
12:04 It’s crazy how true this is on Fe Twitter
@@AkameGaKillfan777 I'll ask him!
I can agree with that cause sometimes you want a grand epic story and sometimes you want Saturday morning cartoon goofiness 😊
@@slammurai6492 Good thing the South Park games are excellent at the latter
Liked and subscribed just for someone mentioning and enjoying 13 Sentinels as much as I did. Great video. 13 Sentinels might be my game of the year for this year.
loved the pokemon section of this🤣
Many people think Scarlet and Violet have performance issues, but actually Spain just runs at 15 fps
Genuinely the best backlog advice I have seen, now I think I will turn on and play f-zero 99 and clear that out :)
I will always say it! Pokémon violet isn’t good it’s pretty fun imo especially when battling friends. It’s fun making teams and battling friends.
12:09 Leo decaprio pointing at the screen meme. It's Thracia 776 lol.
Edit:y'all should play F-zero 99
Actually, the fandom consensus on Live A Life is that the Western chapter is the best. Your finger was absolutely on the pulse for that one.
They'd *really* get mad at you for not putting the Near Future chapter at the bottom.
The only unrealistic thing is IHeartAlphinaud saying XVI isnt a FF when XIV fans actually will defend XVI to their dying breath.
Nah 14 is top tier, 16 doesn’t come anywhere near as good as 14. 16 is forgettable in every way. So disappointing.
Please do a video on Disco Elysium once you finally get around to finishing it.
Amazing video! Keep up the amazing work!!!
Great vid man, definitely gonna play f-zero 99 now
Good thing there is a quick turn around combination in RE4 that is helpful in many moments)
Pick a struggle is good life advice.
Great video, as always. Gotta check out 13 Sentinels now, add it to the backlog...
Torgal > Jill
I was convinced your GOTY was somehow going to be Persona 5 again. Thank God it was still an ATLUS game otherwise I might've had a heart attack
27:26 Franzeska von Karma is in this!?
LOVED your segment on Final Fantasy XVI! I was laughing through the whole thing! Agree on pretty much everything (oh no... am I turning into Jill?! Noooo!) Anyway thank you xD
Excellent use of boyoiyoing sound fx this time around Cap'n
I am so glad Captain Astronaut decided to play F zero 99. WE NEED A NEW ONE! NINTENDO WHAT ARE YOU DOING!
1:32 No love for Sonic Mania...You break-a ma heart!
And the Metroidvania slander lol
You are goated for the 13 Sentinels pick. I only just now started it and I’m loving the brain melt it’s causing me.
Thank you, Captain Astronaut. I was on the fence about buying it and now know that it is common trash.
Lol that burn on Monster Hunter, I hope they still provide you codes in the future😅
Love the vid! I’ll have to play F-Zero 99.
NO NOT THE GT7 TIME TRIAL MUSIC TRACKS. THE FLASHBACKS 😵💫
Woah woah woah Valkyrie Elysium was dope! As long as you didn’t overpay for it! 🤞🏾
All of the promotional art for totk is awesome. Sekiro Link is very cool. Sekiro Ganon is very cool. Sky islands are sick. And we got none of it.
Gotta be honest i love FF16 its my favorite in the series probably tied with a few but Clive was an amazing character so even with its flaws the kaiju eikon battles were awesome and the characters were just so good
obligatory "megalovania was inspired by megalomania from live a live actually"
Spiritfarer just ruined me. In a really good way. I was dealing with a loss when I played it and everything about it made me cry, but in a really just ... cathartic kinda way. Do recommend.
9:23 who's the character on the bottom right? seems familier from somewhere
Fire emblem
Hilda fire emblem
aight, in a month we’re gonna go through the re-re evaluation, where wind waker will be god game, and totk will be good.
"Leon Kennedy is so bad at everything... he gone end up like his Great uncle John F."
BRO WHAT😂😂 I keep forgetting you got melanin and then you say some on of the most melanated statements i ever heard. Right up there with "He need some milk!"
Happy February my guy.
I don't know if it's my TV, but this video for some reason has an unreasonably low volume, had to crank the volume up to 60
Damn atlus in num 1 again
Oh heck yeah. This is the best way to spend my lunch break
It's not Leon who's bad :)
Honestly megas wrre the only gimmick i thought was fun in single player
Only defense for scarlet and violet is I played it with a friend
And probably more time, all this rushing for the christmas release hurts their games to such a painful degree.
please give spiritfarer a chance!!!
Let's go 13 Sentinels in 1st place!!!
Thank you for another based video Captain.
