  • Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves is undeniably a pandering corporate product but goddamn if it isn't the most fun big budget fantasy movie we've seen from Hollywood in years. And its not connected to any cinematic universe either... for now.

Sofina the Red Wizard of Thay is just one more excellent modern female villain to add to the list in this video: ruclips.net/video/F7NpbtRp6y8/видео.html Queens stay winning. Well, losing, if the good guys are competent and achieve their goals.

I think it can also apply for the fact that the movie doesnt take itself too seriously and the characters aknowledges that they are in a weird world but also embraces it which makes it genuine also the jokes actually builds and helps with the world or character writing. Unlike in the MCU it just makes it look disingenious where the jokes are either at the expence of the narrative or the characters and it contrast on the fact that the MCU heavily releys on the fact the audience has to care and take the narrative seriously but the narrative and the cast is ashamed of the fact they live in a goofy world it ends up making the story look shallow.

I love how Edgin and Holga had such a great platonic, co-parent relationship. It's such a great dynamic that is rarely shown in film, or when it is, they cop out of it in the end. I love that they committed to it.
The film felt so DnD in how dumb and silly even the most important encounters could be. When Sofina cast Irresistible Sphere on Edgin and Holga and sent them hamster-balling down the road, I was cracking up in the the theater. It's so great.

If this movie gets more sequels, I think that handling the film series like an anthology would be super refreshing amidst all of the shared-universe superhero franchises we've been getting lately. Plus, if executed well, it'd really give off the feeling of people coming up with new characters for different campaigns.

On the drive home I said that my favourite character was the Paladin and my brother, like you said, immediately clocked him as being the DM helper character.
Had a really great time. I don’t know if I’ll ever play DND but my brother has nearly convinced me to give Warhammer a try. Tabletop games really do appeal to me I just don’t know if I’d have the patience, or the social skills for it.

I'm a big gleep glop person, so I feel like this is going to be a dream movie for me. Especially since I own one of those primordial rust monster toys. They weren't a thing you had to personally import from China, they sold in western countries from the 70s to the early 00s as little bags labeled Prehistoric Animals, and I was lucky enough to get one of those bags of awesome as a kid. It had the weird little guys that inspired the rust monster, the owlbear, the bulette, the umber hulk and a few others I know I've seen reproduced as old B&W drawings but can't find in the original Monster Manual.

I remember when I was young Marvel was praised for actually setting up their universe in a subtle way. They'd let the story happen, than at the end their'd be a little wink. Than when the Avengers happened, it was a monumentous event. But even in later movies, you could mostly follow the story of the individual films without having to do too much research. Than DC was lambasted for bludgeoning you over the head with "muh connections" and putting the universe before the story. Now everything's changed, and Marvel is the mess and DC is...well DC is still a mess but at least there was hope for a while.

Watching this subbed with each location and beast translated, made me wonder if these are the official translation from some ancient 80s Danish translation of the Monster Manual. If not, one guy had a heck of a time translating all these things by himself. I loved that I got so many references and could predict things happening despite never playing and only listening to a single DnD podcast and reading 1 book set in this universe. (I would read the Drizzt books, but there are just so many of them. I might start with the Cleric Quintet for a shorter series first someday.)

Believe it or not, Dungeons & Dragons makes the MCU look like a joke because it has been doing what the MCU is doing MUCH longer, having its own multiverses and stories and adventures (In the form of not just pen and paper games, but also PC/console games, novel books and comic books) that sometimes connect, because are set in the same world in different locations and time periods. For example, this movie is set in the Forgotten Realms, the exact same D&D world as the Baldur's Gate games and Neverwinter Nights games and R.A. Salvatore's Drizzt books.
