    I totally agree with your comments. I take my manuals whenever I go somewhere, and I try to read them as often as possible.

    I go into the field with QCX, QDX, QMX, KX3, K2, and FT-891. I have all the manuals in my iPad and always with me in the field.

      You’ve got a great selection of gear for the field and that’s a great idea for the manuals!

      I have to assume at least once in your career, you've told a client, t"You know what? Let's take a look at the manual."😊

    Good idea. I'm like you in that I'll get out into the field, and forget things about the radio that I brought with me. It's good to RTM, and remember things so you don't have to think about it when you're out.

    The first time I took my KH1 out for an activation, I had preprogrammed CQ POTA, etc. into all of the memories. I didn't actually get out with it until about a week later and guess what? I had to manually do everything because I forgot how to access the memories while out in the field... 🤣🤣🤣

    08:30, just brewed a cuppa coffee. Dropped by YT and who is in my feed? A Thomas video.
    It's gonna be a good day.
    Hi Thomas. I thought I read one does not need a dummy load in practice mode for just practicing keying (at least on the QRP-QMS5 ??

    • @ThomasK4SWL
      @ThomasK4SWL  6 дней назад +1

      Thank you so much for the kind words.
      You're right! In practice mode, there's no RF out. When I'm exploring the manual, though, I just put on a dummy load since it's so easy to do, and that way, I don't accidentally TX if I move out of practice mode.

    Yep. Even if you think you know everything about your gear, RTFM. You might be missing out on a shortcut you didn't know existed. Thanks, Thomas. I hope you and your family are well out there. I know the weather is getting cold. I hope the folks in your community are doing good, too. It's a trip to think that some folks are still working on recovering. Things don't get fixed overnight, but I hope progress is steady. 🤙🏾

      Thank you so much for your thoughtful comment. Things are getting better here, but you're right, we've all been concerned with those who lost their homes and how they cope with the winter WX right now. We've some amazing community organizations at work making sure everyone is safe and taken care of. I noticed today that many of the tents along the river have been replaced with travel trailers hooked up to electricity and water. Again, thank you for checking in.

    Thomas . Sky WOYKS here. Watching your videos has inspired me to join the Long Island CW club . Goal to become a proficient CW operator. On their advice I have coming a CW Morse straight key to start the learning process. Can you offer any advice or characteristics of a good keyer for portable use?

  • @mrice3274
    @mrice3274 6 дней назад +1

    My operating is limited to my shack so I spend most of my on-air time with the IC7200 and 7300. ARRL sells "mini-manuals" for these rigs with most used functions at your finger tips. They are laminated and spiral bound. I also have a KX3, OHR100, AND NorCal SMK-1 among others. Thinking about doing a cheat-sheet for the KX3. (The rest are analog. ) 72 de KA4NIV, Maurice

      A solid plan! I, too, use cheat sheets for some of my radios. I must say that the '7200 is one of the more intuitive radios on the market. Always liked that one! (And the 7300 for that matter!)

  • @ScottNB0W

    I made a "cheat sheet" with lists of how to get to the things I might most likely might need for the G90, Ham Gadgets Pico Keyer, and other things all on one sheet. I slip that sheet into a stiff plastic cover and take it with me on activations for reference.
    Also, I think I read somewhere that hams who use Kensington Expert Mouse trackballs are generally 11.35% more smarterer than those who don't.
