I really need some advice. I am planning on studying Philosophy at University of Nottingham however, I was wondering what careers I can do and where philosophy can take me. I am not that interested in teaching and I considered doing philosophy because compared to most subjects, I feel a bit more confident with the subject. My parents are worried about career prospects and have been putting pressure onto me, especially in terms of money. I was thinking maybe doing the GDL (Law Conversion Course) after Philosophy degree but I am worried about funding and there’s a possibility that I can do Philosophy and English as an undergraduate degree instead however, I need to speak with the University if they can allow that. But if not, I really just don’t know what to do.
Hi! Obviously take my advice with a grain of salt since I don't know your exact circumstances. In terms of doing a GDL, if you have a training contract with a law firm then they will pay for it for you as far as I am aware and this is a very common path to take after studying Philosophy. A lot of philosophy students also go into other lucrative fields such as banking or consulting - as long as you try and get work experience/network in those fields and finish with decent grades, it doesn't really matter what you study when it comes to going into a lucrative career. Your university will also definitely have career advice people that you can talk to and there's also plenty of opportunity to do a master's in another subject that's not law. Hope this helps!
Hi...I'm a first-year philosophy student who is about to shift courses. Ummm...kindly recommend a book on existentialism
