This is true but one of my most powerful regrets was when my dad was like "hey look I'm not one of your friends," and I fired back "EXACTLY!" and stared him down. My dad is a sweet, honorable, if at times a little misguided man.
I used this sentiment to hurt him in a fit of peak, and I will never forget his eyes...

As father you couldn’t have hurt my feelings with that EXACTLY shit! Because unlike your father I would have said I’m not one of your friends and really meant it! If you’re Dad’s feelings got hurt he was just saying it as a cliché.!!!
@@ericcooper712 oh, I have no doubt is was meant as a typical "I wasn't asking" or "what did I just tell you" kind of thing. I just flipped it around on him and made it Hella personal. The tone is what did it too, that and the eye contact.
I did what he told me but it was a "fuck you dad you're shit to me" attitude he really didn't deserve, not just becayse he was an authority figure I "should" respect but because he was and is a good man, just limited at times.
And for the record I waa never one of those "you're not going to spank me kids" my dad is kind but the belt was the only thing I tended to listen to when I was younger. I was just mostly grown when this happened.
Now, my mom would have slapped the shit out of me in that situation and nearly did.

It's a joke of course and we should always maintain the line between parents and minor children. But please let's stop being such disciplinarians and authoritarians that our children don't trust us enough to bring us when they are in trouble or with uncomfortable truths. Parenting takes skill and nuance. Authority must be maintained, discipline too. But you must be enough of a human to gain trust. That's the key. You can be as strong and powerful as you want as a parent. If children don't trust you, they will mimic the behavior you demand. But trouble awaits.
