    From what Bang PD said, most of the rigorous practices and dieting and the rules that BTS follows are self-imposed. He gave them a lot of freedom, knowing that they were smart and ambitious enough to do whatever it took to present their best to the world. They have talked a lot about how they feel a sense of responsibility to their fans and that they want to live lives that don't betray their original character. No one has to enforce standards on these 7 men, because they are living up to their own high standards.

      Yeah I remember when Jimin did that harsh diet in 2016, and how he generally practiced way too much for his body, he later told us how the managers kept advising him he should take more rests and not go on such extreme diets but it was Jimin's choice to still do so

    Not so long ago, Bang Shi Hyuk had an interview and described his trainee system as a school. Trainees can sign up for which classes they wanna take, they get to do projects together and present, and they get access to the recording studios. Just like BTS did (more in more detail now) a new set of trainees at Bighit (or HYBE as a whole) are vlogging their days as trainees. It´s nice to see.
    Bang PD started Bighit cause he was angry at the way things were in the industry. Bighit wasn´t perfect, they had some yikes moments but learned from those trials to create a better environment for their trainees.
    As long as the company keeps the values they set from the beginning, they will have my respect.

    • @tracybrunner863
      @tracybrunner863 3 года назад +33

      Yep Bang PD was so much better than most of the other companies. Trainees do not end up with a huge bill at the end that they have to work off (for dance classes, singing classes etc) as the company writes all the training off as R& D, meaning the idols start making money from the beginning.
      Plus the guys (after debut) did not have any ‘no dating clause’ or phones confiscated etc. They were allowed to grow, learn & make (minor) mistakes

    The best thing about this documentary is... It shows in one, scene what k-pop industry expect their idols to be and how different BTS are from those expectation.
    Namjoon said "It's hard to act happy when they are sad" and next few clips are BTS openly talking about missing their families, being sad, Hobi weeping... BTS never for once fake their emotions, all their vulnerability is out on display for everyone to see and that is exactly why people connect with BTS in such deeper level.
    BH is not a perfect lebel, but they are so much better than every lebel, especially from the Big 3 lebel.

    BTS are no longer required by their agency to diet. Whenever they do diet, it is something they enforce on their own. It's like "Ok, I have a mv shooting coming up, and I wanna look good, and this is what I have to do to look good."

    • @kunilsen2519
      @kunilsen2519 3 года назад +12

      I don't think they ever had a requirement to diet. From my understanding, Mr.Bang and the managers didn't ask BTS to do things like that, and would even ask members that overdid their self-imposed dieting and training requirements to rest and/or eat.

    BTS was almost a different group. When Big Hit was forming a hip hop group Bangtan boys or should be called Bangtan In 2010 the group consisted of 7 members just like now . But the members were different. it consisted of RM, Suga, J-Hope, i11evn, HunChul, Kidoh, and Supreme Boi,. When Big Hit decided to change the group from a hip hop group the an idol group the only ones who stayed were RM, SUGA AND J-HOPE, Supreme Boi stayed at Big Hit as a producer and songwriter.

    BH choreographer was strict with BTS's dance practices back in the days. But now if you see behind the scene shooting of their performances... you can see even now in 2021, when their choreographer is not around BTS keep doing it until every 7 member is satisfied with their whole and individual parts... one time someone was half a second early for one single move and they re record the whole thing... they would say "it's the last take", then "it's the last last take", "it's final take", "it's the last final take"... they keep going until it is closest to perfection.

    Please understand BTS is different from other Kpop groups and BigHit is different from other idol music companies. These first few episodes can be misleading because it makes you think BTS management follows these guidelines the other idol members from other companies are talking about, but BTS and BigHit don’t do those things. Notice how when it is said idols don’t have a lot of creative freedom, you see Namjoon and Yoongi writing lyrics, or when it says idols have phone bans or something, you see the BTS members on their phones, or how when idols say they aren’t allowed to go outside the dorm, you see Yoongi walking around freely. It can be a confusing thing for new ARMY to make note of, but PLEASE notice these differences. It is vital to how BigHit runs differently, and therefore why BTS is so different from other idol groups from the very start.

    • @bulletproofajimae391
      @bulletproofajimae391 3 года назад +28

      And it's part of the reason that SM via some of their artists and fan groups attacked BTS so fiercely. Even when SM allowed minimal creative freedom by a select few, like Jonghyun of SHINee, the company believed in complete control of their artists. Big Hit's philosophy was dangerous and if it succeeded could change the expectation of future musicians, similar to when the Hollywood studios lost control. Even the way the fandom is decentralized is completely different. In the past a company would select the president of a fan club who would then "guide" the club members in the way the company wanted. That's how the Exo fans were encouraged to attack BTS and ARMY. SM played the Exo-Ls like a violin. Even though the two groups like and respect each other, the company had an agenda that meant doing whatever it could to block Big Hit. SM represents various industry professionals, not just musical groups, that the company used as well. So when BH bypassed the traditional variety show path they were not just working free of individual biases against them but also a concerted effort by the larger companies to use those professionals signed to their agencies to stop BH. Ironically this only led to BTS creating an extremely close bond among the members who increased their determination amid the adversity.. It also resulted in BH creating the Weverse platform that more and more artists outside of BH are joining.

Do you know of any specific shows that worked with SM closely? And yes, I’ve heard of those “leaders” of the fandom that took directive from the company and passed it to the rest of the fandom!! They used to be called Masters right? I’ve been trying to find old traces of them online and such so I can see what people were talking about but I can’t find much of them. They talk about how they feel at the moment, what disappoints them, what's making them feel sad - all this honesty and vulnerability that they've been showing since debut is what always endears them to armys. They bravely and freely show all their weakness and flaws as opposed to the persona that the kpop industry wants idols to show the public. But they've been honest and transparent since the beginning. 8 years and they never changed a bit.

    Jungkook’s high school was a special high school for idols. (It has since closed down) This way teachers and classes could take into account when students had to be absent for album promotions and tailor homework packages to be sent with them, be flexible about when tests could be taken etc. Jungkook made some friends from other idol groups in high school that he is still close to today.

It was ‘Korea Arts High School’ the one that Jimin and Tae went to that was closed down in 2019, and Hamlin nearly closed this year because of a lack of freshman, people petitioned and not sure if it was because of that or not but it stayed open.

    As for their crazy schedules and restrictions etc, for me it sort of mirrors the way their entire youth was feeling through schooling too - just instead of cram school they go to practice and instead of essays they gotta write lyrics etc. In a way they were able to continue to feel some of the youths trials and they considered themselves lucky that they got to dance on stage when their peers had to worry over exams. I think BTS got so big because they tried to relate to their audience, while the other bands were too busy trying to be idolised by their audience.

      Also as others have said, these guys are workaholics and forced it on themselves to practice so much usually lol the company told them to take a vacation one time a few years back half of them decided to work and write during that break and after a month decided they couldn't stand being on vacation anymore then started working full time again and even wrote a song about not being able to calm their minds and relax xD

    Bang PD did so many things differently to other agencies. Most trainees end up with a bill at the end that they have to pay back but Big Hit doesn’t do that, they write off the expenses for dance classes, singing classes etc through accounting in R & D, meaning the idols start to make money from the beginning. Also the guys did not have as many clauses in their contracts (no dating, phones confiscated etc), especially after debut. I love that they were allowed to grow & learn etc and not be ‘ordered’ to do things.
    The guys sacrificed a lot to follow this path, they acknowledge that but wouldn’t change it for the rewards it has now brought.
    I think some people may have thought the ex-trainee was Supreme Boi (who ended up being a Big Hit producer) & he has said some questionable things but the guy in this video is still friends with the guys & has stated multiple times- ‘how you see the guys in videos is what they are really like, they do not change their behaviour just because the camera is rolling’. This has been stated by many artist they know them, including Psy, Jesse, Jackson Wang(Got 7) & Amber (the idol that talked about skin beaching).

    You were asking how their classmates react to them. Well when BTS was in school they were not popular yet. That school JK attended were full of idols or trainees. Nobody will take a 2nd look at someone from a small company such as BigHit. Most Koreans hate or were apathetic towards BTS at the start. Parents especially, because BTS are asking kids to stand up and "rebel". BTS' rise is primarily from its external fanbase and truly exploded only from 2017. Even today many Koreans don't give a hoot about BTS, some are persistently wishing or plotting for their downfall. I've met many Koreans in my country who simply dismiss them. And this is such a shame because BTS has done so much for their country. Yes they receive hate and racism from western entities but the prejudice they receive on their home ground is the most painful. To the Korean-ARMYs who stood against this dark wave in Korea, especially those who has supported BTS right from the start, before BTS got big, they have my biggest admiration. BTS schedule is insane. From the time they joined BigHit they only get one day off a month until 2019 where they were given 2 months off but cut it short by one month to shoot their travel reality show Bon Voyage. SM is the same as YG and other kpop labels. They are a part of the toxic kpop industry which churn out idols factory-like. Only BigHit is different and BTS grew organically outside of the industry or the media (which was controlled by the big companies).

    21:53 that's why I have so much respect for BigHit/Hybe every company that wanted to be successful followed Lee Soo-Man's philosophy but the one small company that didn't and chose to focus on raw talent and personalities was the one to create the most successful artists in the world. BigHit used to be more strict in their earlier days, when they were super small and just starting out (it only makes sense, you wouldn't want to start out your career by not having restrictions for yourself to keep yourself in check) but as the years went on BigHit has given BTS the most freedom any group could ever have. They can go where they like, they don't need to keep strict diets (even though some do likely to keep their bodies fresh since their work is so labor intensive or are just in general "health nuts"), they can date, they can write songs about whatever they want, they have all kinds of musical freedom that artists that follow LSM's "rules" can't have.
    I also want to point out that any bad stereotypes you've seen about the K-pop industry is most likely because of Lee Soo-Man.

    illeven, the former BigHit trainee was one of several rappers who were in the original line up for BTS, but they had left for various reasons but mostly they didn't want to be in an idol group. (BTS was originally going to be a hip-hop group.) RM, Suga and Jhope were the only ones who remained. Some of the original mbers knew RM from his underground rap days, and some of them had a hand in talking trash about RM after leaving the group.
    The members who left formed their own "group" called RockBottom, including BTS producer Supreme Boi.
    RM and SUGA dealt with an identity crisis when they were young, being criticized for being in an idol group, many of their songs touch on this and how they overcame the opinions of others and their founder Bang Sihyuk helped them a lot.

    for me kpop idols are not artist , untill they put some efforts in their art. they are just idols who work hard on singing , rapping and dancing. if you don't make your music or even involve in your song making process you are just a singer who sings what is given to you. i think that is what attracted me more towards bts. just in 8 years in industry and all 3 rappers have more than 100 songs under their credit either as producer, writer, composer. it shows the growth, also of 4 vocalist who keep working on songs and learning the song making process. because when someone ask them about their album and songs they actually give back the answer. and its not wrong to say that after bts sucess now many kpop agencies are giving their idols the freedom to work on music . i am not saying before bts no one was allowed to be artistic but after bts many idols are learning making process and trying to make their style of music.

    As I've said, I'm 30 years old, and I think in those 30 years the longest I've not heard my father's voice is a few days. Even when I travel, I am on the phone or whatsapp with him. When J-Hope was breaking down because of his dad's well-wishes I have no clue how long it may have been since he heard his father's voice, but I felt that. These idols do have to go without contact with parents and I cannot imagine it.

    What you are saying about freedom for trainees may sound ideal but for the entertainment companies, they are spending a lot of money, time and effort to find and train these young people. It's also a test to see if they can handle the high pressure. It's a highly competitive field where more groups fail than succeed.

    I never expected my age to make me an adult. I expected that being married or pregnant would do that magic. Mostly because my two older female cousins were treated as adults when they turned 16 and became pregnant and were then quickly married off. Needless to say, neither marriage lasted but the children did. Imagine my dismay when I married at 18 and no member of my extended family considered me adult! That marriage didn’t last either, but I had chosen wisely and we maintained a close and loving friendship until his death a few years ago. The fact that he then married my closest friend (since we were eight) and that I have always been a cherished member of his entire family (he was the eldest of seven children - lots of family), cemented our bond. Also, we had no children, but their only son is my beloved god son who also loves me from the bottom of his heart.

I’m excited to see your reaction to American Hustle Life, LOL. Some parts are cringy, but it was definitely educational. Oh, and there are 4 Cyphers. SM, in my personal opinion, is the epitome of what I don’t like about kpop. Very few artists have any creative freedom, and those have been there for many many years. Big Hit really value the artist contribution and seem to have this attitude that they want to train artists, give them what they need to thrive.

    I actually haven't watched these series by my own, but I'm enjoying watching them with you.
    And yeah, before bts, idols are expected tbe pristine,, but in their earlier albums, bts sometimes swears in their songs lol (in cyphers, bc..well they were cyphers directed at their haters)
    So far, there are 4 cyphers in total. But there are other rapline unit songs too.
    Trivia: Namjoon's resolve of not categorising himself into idol vs rapper vs artist - is embodied in his song "Do You" from his solo mixtape "RM",, and later revisited in BTS' 2018 title track "Idol".
    Just sthg to keep in the back of your mind as you go along the album timeline/ series.

I read somewhere about the HIERARCHY.in HALLYU..its a good thing that visionaries like Bang PD of bighit, PSY of PNATION giving their artists freedom in making their music heard...there are still rules....but atleast they are respected as ARTISTS

As for boygroups right now it's only BTS, but in general there were like up to 5-10 I think at most 💀 they prefer indie, trot, ballad and hip-hop artists, they don't really listen to idol music with a few exceptions like BTS, BlackPink, Twice and some one hit wonders

This part is actually showing how the idol industry really is and how BTS defied that process really by writing and participating in so much of the music that they have released. I think it helped so much that the rapper of BTS had background in the underground hiphop scene.

    BTS have an ongoing reality show right now called "In The Soop" (In The Forest), it's just BTS having a vacation, normally they have a week vacation like the one on Bon Voyage or the last season of In The Soop, but this season they only have 4 days due to their tight schedule.. in "In The Soop", their company basically spoils them providing them anything they want to do (sports & toys) and whatever they want to eat/cook (they deserve it tho, they've been working hard nonstop and BTS and ARMY call "In The Soop" as healing), when they eat, they don't hold back, it also makes you hungry watching them eat, for real... they only go on diet when they decided to do so.. like Jungkook on their Butter music video, he said he only drink water for 5 days before shooting the MV, i bet no one told him to do that, or RM during their photoshoot for Butter and Permission to Dance, he said he was only eating salad to look good for the photoshoot... we also love to see them eat cause they always feed each other, it's so wholesome

    Bighits success proved that freedoms the best route,and newer companies are following suite. PSY has his own label, P-NATION, and they are known to treat their idols well. KQ entertainments another great company. DR music treats idols well too, and they debuted the first black and Latina idols. They are about to debut an Indian girl too( she’s told to have great potential). SM is on the decline( they got so much issues,racism,cultural appropriation, fked up trainee system). JYP is changing for the positive. YGs done for once black pink leaves.

    BTS don't have a *bit* more freedom, they have a *lot* more freedom. Even at the beginning they weren't controlled as much as the other companies control their trainees, but now in 2021 they have even more freedom. Full creative freedom for their albums and their solo works, they can release solo songs whenever they want to however they want to (they decide if they want it on spotify or just soundcloud/youtube, etc). They are never forced to diet, it's a personal decision if they do now. But also if you watch run BTS, bon voyage, in the soop etc you will see that they eat a lot of whatever food they want (junk food included), it isn't controlled or monitored or anything. They just decide what's best for them. They don't have dating bans, they just don't date publicly (mostly because of crazy fans and for their own privacy and safety), etc. They're vulnerable with us, sing and talk about their flaws and fears, they have the freedom to be honest and not perfect unlike the other companies showed in this series. Obviously BIghit isn't perfect, no company can be, but BTS are in a very good situation compared to a lot of other artists, they have a lot of freedom 😊

    Korean celebrities aren't called "idols" for nothing. Since they are put on this sort of a pedestal of fame, they have to be perfect in every aspect. Koreans also understand that those are the ones that a lot of people will be looking up to. Especially the younger fans of these celebrities, so idols need to be these perfect role models.
