Frida Kahlo is one of the most famous, if not, THE most famous Mexican artist. Salma Hayek played her in the 2001 film, Frida. I'd recommend you check it out.

The voice actor of Hector had his daughter in the booth with him when he was remembering his last memory of Coco. She sang along with him. Too many feels. 😭

If you noticed, the skull guitar in the picture that Ernesto steals has a gold tooth just like Hector does, foreshadowing Miguel's true grandfather.
Also, I love that they make the distinction between passion and obsession very clear in this film. Hector was PASSIONATE about music. He chose music because he truly loved it. However De la Cruz is clearly OBSESSED with the idea of being famous and loved and well, rich. The moment we see how “loud” De la Cruz’s personality is when he’s first introduced was the moment I went “huh…suspicious”.
Ernesto also had the hubris to include a poisoned drink scene in one of his movies where HE catches on to it. In that movie, Ernesto wished to return home and Don Hidalgo was sending him off with a toast.
Did Ernesto ever wonder if Hector would've punched him if he caught on?
Yes that was the difference between Ernesto and Hector and sadly Miguel was already headed down that same path as Ernesto, I mean at 12 he's already saying "screw my family, I just love music and that's all I care about." Hector had the good balance of passion for music but not at the cost of his family or himself.
@@Adrianne519 actually, he was slightly more towards music, at least in terms of where he spent his time. Of course he wrote all the letters, but the reason he wanted to go home was because he wanted to be WITH his family, and he wasn't. He realize this, but of course he was murdered right before he could return home. Miguel is also going in this direction, but thanks to the events of the movie, is stopped from doing so. Obviously Ernesto went completely in the wrong direction, which is why he became a murderer!
One of my favorite things is understanding Imelda. Think about it, she thought the LOVE of her LIFE ran out on her to become a musician. She thought that this man who, she believed (in the past tense because it would've been that way for her), Love their daughter, and her, just walked out on them. Then, obviously, because she didn't know that he was murdered, went her whole life believing this: and being a single mother in 1920s and 30s Mexico was not easy.
Also, don't forget about Héctor. He went almost 100 years in the land of the dead being hated by his family. Imagine what it was like when Imelda first died, and he thought she was going to be happy to see him? My heart!
Also Coco, who obviously spent her entire life just wanting her papa! God this movie! 😭

I wish I learned the distinction as a kid - I remember my folks used to complain about me being obsessed with _The Buzz on Maggie_ , so I thought it meant simply being a fan.

Something I think a lot of people failed to take from this movie (not that it’s a bad thing I think it’s just not at the forefront of peoples minds) is that music has always been something that can heal. This movies portrayal of generational trauma (much like Encanto) shows how one generations ideology can come to hurt another’s. Because Miguel’s family banished music from their lives, they failed to realize that music could ultimately heal their family trauma. I always questioned why Imelda didn’t realize De la Cruz’s music wasnt his own but was actually hectors, and then it hit me, of course she wouldn’t know, she banished music the moment he chose to leave to pursue his dream over his family. Had Imelda not done so, in time when De la Cruz became popular and began to find fame in music and TV she would have obviously heard his songs and would have known that her husbands music was being played by someone else. She would have figured out sooner that something happened to hector and that not all was as it seemed. But banishing music hindered the family from learning these things, and thus kept them in this dark, festering pain and anger they felt for hector and music. I’m the end, music brought them back together and healed them. It taught them that it wasn’t the music that was at fault, but instead human error/judgement. I could go on for hours about how much I love and appreciate this movie because I relate so much to it coming from a Mexican and musician home/family.

i agree, they would have exposed De la Cruz a long time ago while he was alive. Also, Hector's guitar was a gift from Imelda. If Imelda saw De La Cruz's concert and see the guitar that he's holding, she would have notice it and realizes that he had something to do with Hector's disappearance. She would have confront him for it.

Dante is a xoloizcuintle, a breed of dog original to Mexico, they have been around since Aztec times and they’re believed to be spirit guides, once you die and cross to the other side Xolos will guide you through, beautiful dogs

This film is one of Pixar's most artistically beautiful - the animation, the broad color spectrums, even the various shades of lighting throughout.
Some examples that stood out to me: Miguel watching the video tape of Ernesto & seeing the bluish glow of the TV screen reflected in his warm brown eyes, the flickering glow of all the candles everywhere, & especially on "the other side". I remember when I first saw this movie & the scene when Miguel first crosses over the bridge to set his eyes on the city of the dead - it's was jaw dropping amazement! This is one of my top favorites from Disney-Pixar studios. And of course it makes me ugly cry every time I watch it. This film has even more meaning for me now because I recently left my job of 3 years, helping an elderly lady with end stage dementia. It was heartbreaking to see her like Mama Coco & her family doing their best... Dementia/Alzheimer's is such a cruel & tragic disease. My own elderly mom was diagnosed with early to moderate Alzheimer's 2 yrs ago.

I think everyone covered the famous people's cameos and references. But about the songs, "Llorona" is the only one that already existed. There are a lot of versions and theories about its origin (some said it is about the legend La Llorona, but it isn't certain). I'm glad you liked it!, it shows a little about my culture and I love it was treated with respect and love : ).
Another song included in the soundtrack that already existed is Jálale by Mexican Institute of Sound, you can hear it during the party scene , but it’s electronic music, not mariachi.

I actually read somewhere that it’s confirmed that if De La Cruz had tried to give Miguel his blessing, it would’ve worked because they both viewed each other as family before Hector interrupted.
That's cool because I have always believed that blood does not define family, it is about the connection and the relationship between people - otherwise orphans, adoptees, and abuse victims would be alienated.
If you notice the petal didn’t start glowing like it did when Imelda did it. Hinting that they’re not related
I cried a lot watching this one. It was so satisfying to know that Hector was his real great - grandfather. We offer foods for our late relatives on a special day here in india too.

There were signs that Dante was a spirit guide. Throughout the entire movie you can see him trying to nudge Miguel toward hector and his family. Also they based Dante off of an actual breed of dog that is common in Mexico and locals believe they are actual spirit guides
Oh man my brother and I cried so hard when we saw this the first time. We were so close to just sobbing during the last Remember Me scene, just trying to hold it in. We heard like five people around us start crying though and we didn't feel so bad for being lose to ugly crying. No other movie has made the both of us cry that. It's easily our top 3 Pixar film!
I cry every time. Even bits of it played during a reaction. My great grandma had dementia and died shortly before this movie came out.
@@fightingfaerie My grandmother passed recently and my mother watched this and had the same reaction and so did I. It's a beautiful movie and message and I'm happy that this movie can have that effect on people.

I love Frida Kahlo. She’s an inspiring artist. Her story is also really tragic. Most of her paintings reflect the pain she felt after a horrible accident and could barely move her body.
I think your discussion afterward really highlights that there are deeply embedded cultural differences in whether individualism or community is more valued. Pursuing one's own passions at the expense of fostering a new generation of the family business is lauded in American society, but other cultures may see that as a tragedy.
My own opinion: you don't have to give up using gifts/talents that you have--you just have to keep your priorities intact. You may not be famous and live on the road, but you are still able to play music (or whatever you love to do)--you choose to do it in a way that keeps your relationships intact. I don't know if Hector was "wrong" to pursue music; maybe he just had to do it to understand what his real priorities were.
I think that sometimes u do, and that this movie says that. Of course not always, but it just brings up that idea
@@whitenoisereacts Basically I meant you can have a hobby instead of a career. You're still using the creative or talented parts of yourself but keeping your family as your priority. I do think sometimes you can't even do that, depending on the circumstances (like a sick parent/spouse, etc.) Going through a career change myself so it's on my mind!
I also think our priorities change throughout life--mine have. Not looking for renown anymore lol.
You guys should totally watch Book of Life! Similar story kind of, but more comedy and a very unique art style imo

If you're enjoying all these Disney movies focused on family dynamics, you should watch "Meet the Robinsons" (2007). It's easily the most underrated Disney movie of all time, to the point a lot of people don't even know it exists 😂😂😂 which is criminal, because it's so much fun and it has a great message

one thing you didn't fully catch is the chorizo joke! chorizo is a type of sausage, so when they're laughing about him choking on a sausage.... it's an adult joke lol
No, it's not. 😳 One of the last things Hector heard when he was alive was Ernesto suggesting that he ate some bad chorizo, so Hector would have assumed he died from eating bad food. But some jerks in the afterlife with childish humor (like yours) bully the poor guy and created the rumor of him "choking on a sausage *laughs in 14 year old*" to tell anyone who asks.
If we're basing everything on adult jokes, what about the guitars made of wood which people play throughout the movie. They're playing with their wood, stroking the neck, going up and down the shaft. *laughs in 14 year old* Not everything is an "adult joke".

This movie makes me so emotional. I was around Miguel's age when my great grandfather got Alzheimers and started forgoting everyone until he passed. My parents shielded me from most of it and it was still awful. So when I see Coco it reminds me of that. I'm so glad she got a happy ending.
If you guys ever feel like crying you guys should let your feeling show cus that is a beautiful thing and also helps a lot in life. Specially in story telling you could tell they put a lot of emotions in all these Disney/Pixar movies and to better understand and feel immersed in the experience of the movies you have to feel what the director or story tellers wanted to make us feel. Btw grandma hits with Chancla. it’s a long running method of discipline in Latin culture. If you pissoff your mom you’re 100% percent being spankad with her shoes. Most parents say if you don’t behave a chancla will hit you. I know I got a few chanclas when I was a kid. My younger sister got threatened by it but never got slammed so she got the better end of the deal 🤣

I love how colorful the movie is. And I loved the part where Miguel sings to Coco. I do wish Coco could have been ‘younger’ In the afterlife, though.

@@RinSicairos Well, keep in mind that life expectancy has gone up over the decades. Imelda died in the 1970's when she herself was in her 70's. Now I don't know what the average life expectancy was in 1970's Mexico, but I imagine it was a fairly respectable age.

I watched this movie with my family in the living room and it was super comfy and nice. Being Hispanic it was fun to watch a Pixar movie I can relate to. I never seen my dad cry before so the ending really was emotional for all of us.
"Coco", in my opinion, works for the same reason "Up" (yes, "Up"!) doesn't... the whole story is a build-up to that emotional climax when he sings "Remember me", not only this is a beautiful and sad moment that captures the magical power of music but it also ties up the story together. "Up" is often referred to as a masterpiece but its emotional peak comes way too soon, nothing that comes after the magnificent five-minute montage holds up that level of sadness... sometimes what makes a scene powerful isn't just the scene itself but its timing...
I agree with you, but to a point, because _Up_ wasn't meant to be a sad movie on the surface, but instead, have a sad undertone. A lot of Disney movies have deaths at the beginning. Pixar just wanted theirs to count for something so audiences understood the main character's issues instead of saying it was just another dead loved one/relative of the main character. The way _Up_ played it had the audience caring about his overall reasons why he felt he had to get the house to that spot instead of helping the bird and the boy. The emotional peak is actually the man realizing he needs to help the boy. We care about that moment because of how powerful the beginning montage is. It could have easily been another parent death type of moment in which case _Up_ wouldn't be nearly the movie praise it for.

I actually liked "Up" a lot when it came out... it just so happened that I found "Inside Out" and "Coco" much better or maybe just less conventional... "Up" gets a little conventional at some point. You're spot on about Carl's epiphany and yes I agree its a pivotal moment... I just wish the film could offer one big 'WOW' at the end... but the montage became such an instant classic that it was impossible to remember anything else from the film... as I am writing this I am thinking of Toy Story 3.... the heart-pounding furnace scene and the moment they give up trying... the "so long, partner" at the end. It took me one viewing to have these images rooted in my memory... now "Up" may not be the best film in my opinion but the montage sequence belongs to the Top 100 of the most iconic movie moments ever...
The emotional climax of "Up" is not at the beginning when Ellie dies. It is nearer to the end when Carl is sitting in his chair at Paradise Falls, sadly reviewing "My Adventure Book" and discovers the added pages after "Stuff I'm Going to Do." "Up" works just as well as Coco.
@@robertscott1949 Oh I didnt say "Up" didnt work at all nor that it didnt have a climax... it's a movie after all it's got to have one near the end. And yes its an emotional one. Now I said the montage was the emotional peak which means the most emotionally loaded moment of the film and the most memorable. I will use an analogy, take the film "Interstellar" the reunion with the daughter is the emotional climax but would you say it's the most emotional moment of the film? Which scene instantly pops to mind when you think of "Interstellar"? Or is used in the cover of every First Time Watching film? Movies that peak too soon are like directors who start with their masterpiece...
I don't _love_ "Up". IIRC, I gave it a 7/10.
This was a beautiful reaction. Coco truly spoke to me and brought me closer to my culture. I loved seeing your reaction to when Miguel first crosses the bridge and sees the city. I never fail to get emotional when he says, “You’re all really out there!”
I watched this a few months after our dad's death. He would sing to us, like he each had a special song to me and my sisters. Damn. This movie hit home

Fun fact Coco was such a hit in Mexico it became the number 1 highest grossing movie ever on 2017-2018.The Spanish Latin dub it’s so damn amazing a lot of people prefer it over the English dub.

Ernesto de Lacruz is based on Pedro Infante and Jorge Negrete. They were both famous musicians and actors. They were mostly known during 40s and 50s.

Absolutely love Coco!! A movie with just about the most amazing stop-motion animation that I HIGHLY recommend is Kubo and the Two Strings! This movie is set in feudal Japan and is just incredible!
Being Mexican American, this movie perfectly captures my culture and preparations for El Dia De Los Muertos (The Day Of The Dead). How we decorate the altars, the music, the lore behind the celebration, everything. Also, Dante is a breed of dog called a Xoloitzcuintli (Zoh-loh-eats-QUEENT-ly) or a Xolo, for short. According to the lore of the Day Of The Dead, Xolos were guides to the underworld.
One of the best Pixar films for sure!
Ernesto De La Cruz is an amalgamation of several famous Mexican singing cowboys from the 40's and 50's if I am not mistaken.
This movie always hits hard for me because my father was a musician and my mother loved to sing with him. We even had a special song. Also from experience I can clarify that Hector would've gone on tour to earn money and provide for his family, possibly for several months at a time and especially in those times. Busking (street performing) gets some great earnings depending on skill, but to get consistent high-paying gigs it's not uncommon for professional musicians to branch out to gain a reputation, secure contacts, and ensure that there's enough interest in them to be hired for more future gigs.
Music is also what brought my parents together, so if my father had up and left, choosing music over her, I can easily imagine her despising and resenting it just like Imelda did.
I love this movie so, so much. Everything about it is just gorgeous. I don’t even need to watch the entire scene when Miguel is singing to Mama Coco, I only need him to start the song before I weep every time. It made me wish as caucasians that we had something this beautiful to honour our late relatives.
It takes a LOT for a movie to actually make me cry, but THIS movie, actually made me tear up a little-

The songs are original from the movie, of course the honor the "musica ranchera" which is a traditional music genre in Mexico, but they are not directly taken from any specific song.

I see you have been told that Frida Kahlo was a famous Mexican artist in the 1920's & 30's. Yes, she did have a unibrow. All her art expressed her emotional states as well as the things that were happening in her life. I'm surprised you guys haven't heard of her, or that they made a movie about her, where the actress Selma Hayek portrays her. Frida's husband Diego Rivera also a famous artist/muralist of the time.

Apart from Frida Kahlo, her husband Diego Rivera is also seen in the art studio. He's the one painting the "nude" model. It's fun noticing all of the cameos throughout.
4:45 most asian cultures do this. in thailand most households would have a spirit house outside in their lawn and put food there. it calls any good spirits to come and stay. with them around the property any evil spirits roaming will stay away with the good spirits around protecting the place.
4:40 yes, very common in Japanese households to have a family "shrine" in the house. My grandma's house has our family's main one & every morning & night, we put out a little cup of coffee & a rice bowl 🍚 (at dinner time) for my departed grandpa.

The songs were written for the movie, I believe- EXCEPT for La Llorona (the song Imelda sings), which is a traditional folk song. The joke about the lyrics being changed was written into the song.

I over-think and notice hints to a plot, and I knew the plot twists the moment they showed Hector's gold tooth. I deduced that it wasn't Ernesto de la Cruz's honouring a friend on his guitar, it was painted on the wrong side for that possibility as Hector must have based it on his reflection in the mirror =)
That didn't stop me loving this movie!

I adore Coco! It's just so well done on every level to me. I love all the colors and the storytelling. I get a bit teary anytime I watch it because I was very close to my late Maternal Grandparents. The first time I watched it I was just totally wet faced, which I never expected to be. And a bit of family info, 2 of my Niece's oldest kids are part Mexican and a dash Italian too from their Father (my Niece's Ex). But anyways, was nice watching along with y'all.😊

Very interesting topic on going for your dreams but there are sacrifices needed to be made to gain it.
Example.
My daughter is 12 now, she been singing since she could talk and loves to do it, she sings wayyyy beyond her years ,she could easily challenge the greatest singers (not exaggerating)
I asked if she every wanted to go pro and sing for the world and she doesnt, i asked why? and she said there to many sacrifices, she would miss her friends and home she knows being a professional singer means moving around a lot and not only singing but to do photo covers and sign things and so on, and she loves her childhood.
achieving your goal is a great thing but there will always be sacrifices needed to be made to achieve it.

My grandfather has been diagnosed with Alzheimer disease a few months ago, we are from Mexico from the state where Coco’s setting is, this movie reminds me of enjoying passing my time with him more

I am not mexican burt I grew up watching mexican tv, Hernesto represents the golden era of Mexican Movies which were kind of musicals, there weree two people who were the biggest starts at themoment Pedro Infante and Jorge Negrete, U think Hernesto represets both of them. Infante always wore a white mariachi set. BOth of them actually appeared in the movie during Hernesto party, they are riding the horses while Hernesto is introducing Miguel and later they are singing together Remember me.
The breed of dog that Dante is , is believed to guide souls into the after life. Those yellow flowers are also believed to help guide souls to their alters.

I love how Disney uses familial resemblance to make someone being estranged from their family hurt more. Miguel's dad looks so much like his grandfather Hector, yet he didn’t even know until the end of the film, as he'd gone his whole life without seeing his grandfather's picture.

In the well where they are tossed by Ernesto, you can see the sculpture of Mictlantecuhtli, god of the dead, as it was found by archaeologists.
Ernesto De La Cruz is a shoutout to Pedro Infante, Mexico´s most famous singer ever.
The bridge is made of Cempasúchitl flowers, which we use in our altars.
In Ernersto´s party you can see a LOT of famous mexican people from all eras.
This is one of my favorite movies that I discovered watching reaction videos. It is my second favorite Pixar movie. Pixar just doesn't make any bad movies, and their animation is beyond just about any other animation studio. Their movies always have good messages in them. They are also known for being extremely emotional, but also with a lot go good humor. I loved watching your reaction and analysis of Coco. I will be looking forward to seeing your other reactions to Pixar movies as you do them. My favorite Pixar movie is Luca. I hope you do that one soon. When you get to it be sure to watch the credits the art in the credits add a lot more to the story. You may also want to add the Pixar short, Caio Alberto, along with Luca. It continues a part go the story.

If I saw this as a kid, death and murder but done so sweetly explained but realistically I'd be more messed up than I already am. I learned about death at 5 watching Child's play, it bummed me out but not like this. I love it. I'm sorry I put off seeing it for so long, I first saw it last year. My new favorite movie is Luca but this is top 10

Everytime. Just everytime I see this movie, I end up bawling. I'm reminded of my grandpa who passed away when I was ten. What's hilarious is that the guy who accidentally let go of the bell that killed Ernesto looks exactly like him so I like to think 'oh my god, my papo killed Ernesto!

I'm not sure if this was mentioned, but I recently came across a short from someone who helped work on this. They talked about how this was the first time they ever animated skeletons, they wanted to make sure that they were expressive even as skeletons. And they also mentioned that they were worried about the make-up on there faces would take away from them, but they wanted to still stay true to the actual culture and all that stuff.
It was so interesting to see parts of them animating the characters and the test they did with lighting/shading, and the test with the make-up to see how it worked and whether it subtracted from the face or not.
Love the reaction! I just realized it too... in every day of the death. Anyone could have enter the spirit realm with just the reason for stealing, no wonder they weren't surprise.
