We hatched 3 eggs together, so had 1 male & two females for about eight weeks. One of our female recently got away, and we haven't Bern able to find her. Ever since, our boy is restless in their home, going back and forth, and he's calling like this, but constantly. Do you think it's because he misses the other female?
Only the males crow. I have a male and three females together in the big coop, and 2 males together in the 'bachelor coop'. I can't keep more than one male together with females or the extra males fight. Next year, I hope to get more females, so all the males can have some girls.
You could tell he wanted to do it again the whole time....the way he inched up there lol. Too adorable. I have chickens, and I was considering getting a coturnix pair or trio. How tame can you get them?
MIne will come and eat out of my hands, and sometimes let me pet them. But they don't like to be picked up and held except when they are babies. The babies are super super sweet and SO tiny and adorable. I have the best luck keeping the adults as pairs. I tried trios, and the male and one female would mate bond together and pick on the remaining female. I finally had to take all the extra females out and keep them together in a separate pen. I was afraid they'd be hurt, the way they kept flying into the wire to try to escape the pair. I have a blog of my quail-keeping adventures at liselfwench.wordpress.com
j.r.d.l He's just a little scared or nervous. Try giving him canary or finch seed as a treat. First keep scattering a little in front of him whenever you open the cage. After he gets used to seeing you bring food, start offering it to him out of your open hand. He will probably learn to eat off your palm, and then he'll be much more tame.
j.r.d.l They love to dig and scratch around in dirt, and take dirt baths like chickens do. They like to eat leafy greens like kale, dandelions, and other veggies. They like to have little nooks and hiding holes to make them feel comfortable and safe. I look for evergreen tree branches and put them in the cages so the quail can run under them. The males in particular like a "crowing stand" - a raised area they can stand on to watch life from and crow. I have a facebook group about keeping quail naturally; if you're interested, you can find it here: facebook.com/groups/914934035223734/
Nice enclosure. Do you use a light in the winter time for warmth? Or can they get along without it? I'm worried about when it starts to freeze even though I have 15 of them together in a large enclosure.
I don't use lights or heat in the winter. I do wrap the wire in plastic to keep out wind, and them straw to burrow in. It gets down to about 12 degrees F here, and they don't seem to even notice the cold.
I have mine in an enclosure now and they seem to be doing okay, of course its not that cold yet, and it will snow starting in late November. I've seen rat droppings around the duck house and possums around the cat bowl, and that scares me, I know the quail would be a tasty meal for a big rat, or a possum. I have the entire "poultry" yard wired for and electric fence, just haven't turned it on yet. Thinking of testing it out tomorrow.
The crowing doesn't sound that loud... until my quail crowing wake me up at 3 am.
my nearly 4 week old little boy has just started calling, it made me laugh the first time I heard it, sounds like flicking an elastic band 😂
LOL Your quail looks like a little peacock the way the foliage is behind him it looks like a peacock tail. That's cool! lol
Hillbilly Half Acre Homestead Hahaha! I didn't notice that until you pointed it out.
BEAUTIFUL QUILLS...
My quails crowed when this played
My neighbours reported me for mine thinking it was a fox scarer.
Seems that would be a good thing! I take it your town sided with the neighbor?
Nice video thank you

What type of plant is that you have back there? It's very nice for them to hide in I might like to get one of those
It's a type of grass I bought...can't remember the name. They did love it.

I noticed when I was there the male and female call to each other. Are you going to let them be together?

Maybe my neighbor will 'let me' have one of these?
What kind of plants you put in there
j.r.d.l I had some grasses in there - I don't remember what kind. But the quail just eat or destroy every plant I put in there.
Oh ok
liselfwench2 hey is there anything i could put in the pen like toys or accessories that could keep them happy

Is this as loud as a dog bark?
Much less loud.
@@BacktoEdenUrbanFarm less loud than a rooster?
Yes. It's a pleasant sound, like a wild bird.
