I think she was just relying on the clear pattern that MAGA fans don't really care about reality but if Trump likes you and liberal talk show hosts criticize you then you are a saint, especially if you can frame it as a rural America vs big city issue. So I think she picked something that would obviously get a reaction by liberals because she figured Trump fans would rush to he aid. Don't get me wrong, she's a psycho for killing the dog and she deserves all of the mockery. But I'm guessing that was the point. And while Trump fans don't care about reality, I think they're struggling with this one if for no other reason than that it just seems to make her look stupid for mentioning it.
I think most trump supporters like dogs enough that this offends them, but there is a very specific kind of rural southern/Western conservative who actually really likes killing animals when they are not useful to you. she was probably assuming all the republicans were just like SD republicans
