WHAT IS LIFE LIKE IN UKRAINE? | Chernivtsi, Ukraine

  • Going to major cities in Ukraine doesn't always give you the full picture of how life is for the average person and what lies beneath the surface. I decided to go to a mid range city in Western Ukraine called Chernivtsi to get a more inside look and chat with the locals about their opinion on things. I was born in Ukraine myself, but moved to Canada at the age of 5 and would only go for a weeks to visit every couple of years. Even though I think I have more insight than most people about what life is like there, I still have a lot to learn and a lot of the country left to explore.

2 years ago I took my family to Ukraine. We walked across a bridge over a river that is the border with Romania. All the Romanians asked why we were wanting to visit Ukraine because it wasn't something they typically did themselves. There was a noticeable difference right away as Ukraine didn't seem as prosperous as Romania. But in a short time felt very comfortable there and had a great visit. Loved Lviv!

Hi Alina, interesting video, thanks. I've been to Chernivtsi a couple of times. I think for the uninitiated, a little bit of historical background would have helped. Essentially, the city (Czernowitz) was built from scratch by the Austrians from the late 18th century and was an outpost of German (to a large extent German Jewish) culture up to the end of the first world war, with the easternmost German-speaking university in the country. No single ethnic group dominated, and everyone somehow had to get along, so it was in many ways a microcosm of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Although many of the ethnic groups have disappeared or dwindled since then, so the city is now predominantly Ukrainian, it still has some of that central European atmosphere - and of course the old architecture is a permanent reminder of those times. So I don't know how typical it is of cities in western Ukraine - it's certainly feels different from places further east.

I visited Ukraine several times in the 80's while still under Russian control primarily to work on my Russian language skills. I revisited post Russia in 2000 while on leave. I really didn't feel much had changed other than the people seemed a bit happier but only a bit. I am American but have citizenship in Bulgaria as well. I own a home near Sophia that I remodeled in the early 90's and rented out. My tenants have never changed and we have a family relationship. They are wonderful people and when I visit I have a small guest house to stay in there. Someday I may move their perminately but for now I remain in the Rocky mountains. I am retired now with a pension that would provide a very comfortable there but I have no bills here other than a cellphone. One day perhaps I will go and just stay, the area of Europe is beautiful as well as the people. Thank you for the nice video tour of Ukraine.

However, if you plan a visit to Bulgaria I'd consider helping with short term accommodations near Sophia.

@@yeahno6053 the language is built on the crylic alphabet which consists of 33 characters. If you focus on learning the alphabet first you will find learning the language incredibly easy. While the Ukrainian language is similar to Russian they are distinctly different. That said Ukraine was a Russian state a long time so by learning Russian first you will find communication in all the former Russian states very good. Grammar is challenging but you'll catch on simply by thinking backwards and sideways. I know that sounds silly but you'll understand later. There is a very charming young lady with a RUclips teaching Russian but I'm drawing a blank on her channel name, Russian Club or something along those lines. Use voice chat and watch Russian and Ukrainian movies, videos and online news and you'll be surprised how easily the language comes.

I just discovered your channel Alina and I'm so proud of you portraying you origin country so nicely and humane. I want to do something as well to help people in these countries, there are so many beautiful women there that deserve a better life. Men ... they do wars, they feed a military system to stay in power then they get killed defending stupid political ambitions for the good of a few corrupted and villain ones. Of course in muddy times corruption take place, develops and keep feeding the system in a down spiral destroying more and more economy and lives, imagine something like a tornado only created by humans. Women and children deserve better chances in life, men too we're all in this together.

I like that you ventured out into the rural areas and smaller cities. When I traveled in the military, I always ventured out away from the tourist areas, so that I could try to experience the true culture of a place. I enjoyed your video, especially the parts that you narrated. If you could add more narration and less script to read, that would make it even better. Having to read is a distraction from the video content. Of course I understand that it is necessary at times due to the language barrier of your viewers (myself included) when you are interviewing the citizens. Also if you could give a little short biographical description of the people just prior to interviewing them, that would lend more depth to the content. I really liked the background music in this video as well. It put me in a thoughtful, nostalgic mood, and very relaxed. I began remembering the various places that I have visited in the past. I have never been to Ukraine, however, and am very curious about it, especially now that there is so much going on there presently with the Russian invasion and all that goes with it. My heart goes out to the Ukrainian people, and I pray for them daily.

Thank you for this video!!! It depicts Ukraine as I see it, with welcoming and intelligent people, ancient and deep heritage. Such a shame so few people want to give it a try.
By the way, I try to spend some of my holidays there once every 2 years at least since 2012, and the cities I travel to changed soooooo much! People living there do not necessarily get it, but the city roads are far better, supermarkets are more modern now restaurants are blooming, and so on... I would say that even people's mentality have drastically changed since the revolution.
One of the things I hate in Ukraine is that people tend to depreciate their country/culture/life and put western Europe on a pedestal. But since 2014 I see a wave of "national pride" that is heartwarming (even though it is still limited to the youth, from what I see).

I'm from US and am working toward visiting Eastern Europe as soon as it is safe to travel again... hopefully in April or May. I've watched 6 of your videos, mostly of Ukraine. I like this one because you interacted with numbers of local people. There are a number of vlog'ers around who cover the treasures not to miss, which I am very interested in seeing and experiencing. But even though I only speak English, I hope to learn a little of what it would be like to live there. Thanks for focusing this vid as you did. I'm retired, male, 73 and will travel alone.

I really appreciated your interviews with the local people. This way you provide us with a view of the country that is unfiltered and honest. The New York Times, my main source of international reporting, rarely gives us a picture of a country from the point of view of the actual ordinary people living in that country. This is most helpful to me to get a well-rounded picture of the world. Thank you so much.
