It is better to avoid the video music in Metal. You go either with the studio or live version.

ZAPHYROS i second this, specially because metal tends to have longer songs and the official music videos are usually edited and cut short.

Don’t bother doing a reaction video if you don’t have the time or you are too tired to understand the music, and understand the lyrics. Often in Metal songs the lyrics tell a story. The background of this video directly reflects on the lyrics of the song. To disregard it that simply! Wow! You should probably stick with Justin Bieber. “If I’m just being honest“

If you play the regular song it doesn't have the movie clips. I Know it's hard but the songs words are tell the story... The song and movie clips are from the 1971 movie "Johnny got his gun". All the words are the "soldier in the hospitals thoughts". He was severely injured in the war. He lost his sight, hearing, speech, arms and legs. He has no way to tell the doctors to let him die... He is finally able to communicate with Morris Code..Here is something great to React to. I promise you will like it.. Davina Michelle's cover of the Adele song "Someone like you" or another title you like on her RUclips channel. Best voice that I have ever heard... She posts a cover every week. All her covers are as good or better than the original.. Really incredible...

that "mumbling" in the background is fairly important. knowing what the song is about is one of the most important things about this song, not just the instruments. try to watch and understand the lyrics (as well as the "voiceover")… but I can see how it would be distracting in some sense

With metal songs, you guys should do lyric videos to help you understand the songs better. This is a great song about war and a soldier getting his arms, legs, and face blown off by a landmine. Hes in his own hell. He can feel pain but cant communicate what's going on and hes being kept alive by machines. Keep listening to new songs and enjoy your journey into metal.

Yo, a “Yank” from The States over here. Ya have to understand this song is an homage to a book by Dalton Trumbull, enticed “Johnny Got His Gun.” WWI, American gets blown up a land mine. Loses sight, speech, legs... etc. he can hear what everyone’s saying, but can only communicate using Morse Code with his eyes. The over-the-top instrumentals represent the sounds of actual WAR, adrenaline rush to kill or be killed and confusion. It’s also a metaphor of his conscience and indecisive thoughts. To make a bit more sense, the guitar riffs were meant to sound like machine guns. This may account for the overload you didn’t care for. The film clips were taken from a film of the same story. I suggest giving it another listen armed with this information. P.S. I go to Ireland every year and have somewhat of a love affair with it. Speakin’ of love... love me some Magic Mak. We dig that badass ova here...

My first introduction to Metallica was One back in 90 or 91. My older cousin had a stack of CDs and "And Justice for All" was on top and in the stereo on this track. I was instantly hooked, but it took 2 more years to circle back to them. You really should start at the beginning with Kill em All and work your way forward track by track (possibly an album review). That is truly the only way to understand and appreciate their unique and signature sound. Still killing it after 35 years!

The song and music video bus based on "Johnny got his gun" about a young man who goes to WW1 and in an injury loses his sight, taste, hearing, smell, and both arms and legs. He spends a couple of years learning to communicate via morse code with his neck and head where all he says is "sos help kill me" over and over until a friend of his from the war tells him that the military won't kill him because it's "not the military way" and he resolves himself to live not knowing if he is awake or asleep and dreaming until he dies a natural death

    One
    Metallica
    ...And Justice For All, ©1988
    Hetfield / Ulrich
Metallica’s 1988 song was partially inspired by the movie Johnny Got His Gun, originally a novel written by Dalton Trumbo in 1938. The anti-war novel tells the story of an American soldier in World War I who has been grossly disfigured by a landmine. All his appendages have been removed and his face was blown away leaving him trapped in a lifeless body, unable to communicate with the outside world.
The novel was re-released during the Vietnam War and subsequently adapted into a movie which Trumbo directed in 1971. Metallica secured the rights to the movie and incorporated numerous scenes in their music video for the song One. In 1989 Metallica released a video, 2 of One which includes two versions of the music video and an interview with band member Lars Ulrich who states, "We just know we made something that's very, very unique and different." He also explains that the idea for this song actually originated with band member James Hetfield who was thinking about what it would be like to have a healthy mind trapped within a useless body, a "living consciousness" or "basket case", unable to communicate with others.

There's another music video for this song that doesn't have clips from "Johnny Got His Gun" playing in the background. They only used clips from it because the vocalist had an idea about a guy in the army who loses his arms, legs, sight, speech and hearing and is just a shell and someone pointed out that a book with that plot already existed.

The "radio" you are referring are actually scenes taken from the movie Johnny Got His Gun, which is based on the book, "Johnny Got His Gun" by Dalton Trumbo. The song is also based on this book. In the book, Johnny, having learned to communicate with his nurse through a system of Morse code, manages to communicate his desire to be taken to Washington D.C. and there presented to the people in order to show them the true horror of war. But the generals and the politicians refuse Johnny's request, because they want the war to continue. The book ends with the generals leaving Johnny in a dark room alone with his nurse to die, his request forever denied.

This song/album came out at the height of late 1980s MTV music videos, where it was all about the music videos. The videos, videos, videos. It was an amazing video, but you can’t fully appreciate the song itself until you listen to the song/with the lyrics only. This song, next to Wherever I May Roam, is my favorite Metallica song. Don’t Tread On Me, and Of Wolf And Man are favorites of mine as well.

This song is literally an allegory for the movie in which it has clips from (Johnny got his gun) and how the effect of war can take their toll on an individual and leave them as a literal living bag of meat that cant talk, hear, see, and has no limbs. And how the character in the movie is just living inside himself with no external contact whatsoever, and slowly begins to realize what his life is and that if this is all it will be, then it is no better than being dead.

Hey Drew, those video clips are of 1971's movie named Johnny Got His Gun. It is about young American soldier in WWI badly wounded like he is a quadruple amputee without his eyes, nose & mouth. As he unable to talk to his doctors, soldier is able to talk to doctors tapping Morse Code with his head.

Great reaction. Even if you don't appreciate certain parts of the music, most people will recognize your comments are nothing more than initial reaction. So don't feel the need to apologize for anything you say. Say what you feel :)
DO NOT WATCH MUSIC VIDEOS. Stick with lyrics videos. You focus on the music, and you get the message. That's all you need. No more music videos.

Well, this IS in fact, YOUR reaction video, YOUR opinion. No doubt about that. But I'm sure there are many commentes on here that were screaming at their phones at your disapproval of the video and song itself. There are many Metallica songs that have their cult following, but I believe that the entire Metallica fan base can collectively agree that 'One' is a work of art. It cannot be denied.

In my personal opinion, even if the song was based on the book and movie (the clips in this video), they never should've added movie clips to the video, because it distracts from the song rather than adding to it. The poor movie audio is difficult to hear and it ruins the song in the process. At any rate, read up on the song to get the gist, it only takes 30 seconds. Then you'll understand.

  • @Codeslammer

If you listened to the movie clips you would have understood the song lol. It’s based off an old movie where a soldier was blown up and became physically disabled throughout his entire body but his mind was intact. He taps in Morse code “sos please kill me” because its all he can really do besides simply exist

This is a perfect illustration how modern music is so dumbed down that the current generations don’t know how to interpret sounds. Let’s face it, current popular music has such minimal mental stimulation that when people listen to something with some substance it’s too much for them to process. Personally I find this song extremely simple to follow along to, it’s almost alien for me to imagine someone being overwhelmed by it...these are pretty simple musical ideas. When I was young and didn’t listen to very complicated music I can relate to some instrumental music being hard to grasp (try listening to Alan Holdsworth if you really want to challenge your mind, to most its random sounds but in reality it’s highly composed) but as time went on and I became more attuned to picking out the different patterns I was hearing anything less seemed boring. Keep listening to music that challenges you...you won’t regret it in the long run.

The song is not about the movie. They wrote the song and then were turned onto the movie by a producer when they were looking to do their first video. The movie had scenes and themes similar (as far as the injured soldier is concerned) where as the movie was a protest against the Vietnam War. There were three videos made for this song. This is the video you should watch, just them in the warehouse, jamming. ruclips.net/video/8NhKK8Y-wIo/видео.html

I love the quotes going over the top of the music, I think its better than the studio mix
Its probably because Ive heard the studio mix so much and I know exactly what the music sounds like and I know what the meaning of the song is about so I can focus on what the quotes are saying and the message is so powerful its unreal, the song is a masterpiece and I just can't express how much better the quotes make it

It's OK if you don't like something and especially being new to Metal music I can see how you may not appreciate or understand some aspects.
I'm new to watching you guys but enjoy your metal reactions. It's always interesting to see newbies reaction to a music form they are not used to.
I'm going to suggest a few for you and maybe you will end up reacting to one or two:
Parkway Drive: Wishing Wells (must watch the video while reviewing)
    Slipknot: Psychosocial
Leo Moracchioli: Hello (Adele Metal Cover) I think you guys will really enjoy this one!
    Pantera: Cowboys From Hell
Please do the Adele Metal Cover it would be great because you already know the original song as we all do and to hear a Metal spin to a song you know would
be fun for all of us to see.
    Good Luck!
BTW: Amy reactions are great; especially when she looks at the camera and makes her "metal face" lol, love it.
