- It's 30 years since the Escort Cosworth became one of the first uninsurable hot hatches, back in the early 90s. Fast forward to 2023 and we're seeing the same issue, only this time it's the Range Rover Sport SVR that's become the target of thieves (along with other Range Rover models).
In this week's update we chat about the impact of insurance as well as catching up with the latest projects in the workshop and answering your tech questions.

My manager had a E-Tron, and someone drove into him. So non-fault. Repairers wanted to replace all four wheels at £2.5k each (even though only one was damaged in the crash), and more.. purposefully writing the car off. Oh.. and the courtesy car was £450 per day, for 53 days. THIS is what is putting up our premiums. £48k payout, plus £24k for the courtesy car. The industry is an unregulated joke.
Usually happens when these claims management companies get involved to take care of the claim for the insurer. They must get a percentage of the claim amount.
Insurance companies earn more than they pay out if they didn’t they wouldn’t be in business very long..
And I’m betting the insurance costs pushing those cars off the road is more to do with the green agenda..
All a big money pit and it’s banks , financial institutions, underwriters and lawyers that are making cars un insurable . Manufacturers don’t do themselves any favours either with massive margins on spares . Even taking into account development costs for low volume models it’s all loaded onto the consumer.
@@Mac_F87 The claims management company, more often than not, own the hire car provider too. If insurance providers handled claims better, the management companies wouldn't have a business model. No problem to them though, it's easier to just raise premiums.
@@anlygi exactly, the only loser is the motorist as always. Have to have insurance so they can hike it up as much as they like. You either pay, take the risk driving uninsured or stop driving. There is definitely going to be a big increase uninsured drivers over the next year. Another reason for them to increase premiums to recoup losses due to uninsured driver accidents. It’s a vicious cycle.
Karl is simply a reality weapon!
Love re performance recognised Ricky right away :) used to take my r8 there to be serviced when I had it .. too bloke and a great honest garage
My son passed his test in 2012 when it was tough to get new driver insurance. It cost £1600 to insure him on an old boggo spec '57 plate Ford Ka in doom blue. The colour could make over £400 of difference. Crazy. He also liked to go over speed bumps at speed so did the front springs. Nail of an engine but loads of fun to chuck about. My first car was a dark metallic blue '73 Volvo 144DL which was rescued from a field. It had vinyl roof, cracked leather upholstery, a sunroof and a Fairey overdrive on the steering column. No power steering though and did 19mpg. It survived a crash with a horse lorry with a dented rear wing. When the front windows dropped we replaced the front doors with ones from a bright yellow 245 estate. They fitted. We called it "The Beast".
Good evening , great video as always , just a quick one about insurance
Had a Audi s4 b5 declared modded, 49 yr old fully comp £280
Bought a winter wrcker 54 plate pole derv £640 due to not having experience on a polo derv ( insurances exact words) .
Changed jobs sold S4 got a A6 c6 170 tdi insurance £809 wtf ! It's a joke what's going on, love the videos always look forward to a chill to watch them . Thanks for making them even with all the work you have on. Cheers Andy
Carl’s realism is the reason insurance has taken a turn
The insurance debacle sounds like the issue for first time buyers years ago (and still going on). It’ll just end up a renters market, with monthly DD’s being the same as those buying but unable to save for the initial deposit. I’m saying that because that’s where I’m at with the housing market.
BTW great channel, love the rants, keep up the good work 🤟
First car had nova 1.2 b reg paid 700 for it and insurance just third party no fire of theft 750 I'm going back 30 years. It did get written off after I went through a wall. Now it's all financed to the hilt.
My first car(in 1983) at 18 was a 1979 lada 1500 estate.
£88 fully comp with obviously no,no claims.
The car cost me £975 cash from a type writer salesman.
However Google the value of £88 pounds in 1983 and today its £366 which is more than its costs to insure our car today (a 17 plate kia rio,so older than my lada and in the same sort of league car wise)
In 1997, my first car was a 1978 Mini, insurance was £500, I think tax was £120ish for the year? Fuel was 65p per litre? Duckhams 20/50 mineral oil was £15 for a gallon.
My first car was a 106 GTi but I was paying through the nose. I was £2500 a year, that was back in 2003 as well.
Young kids in decent cars, wouldn’t be surprise me if quite a few parents are fronting the insurance on their kids behalf.
I work in East London, and the thefts of Range Rovers is simply un-relentless. Essex and London, are at a point where the question, has to be asked….Why would you want to own one?!?.
Anywhere near London and the M25 and good luck.
I’m therefore not surprised that people will struggle to insure them. So what will some do in East London, and the areas around there, either don’t bother to insure it, or clone it after stealing it.
With insurance as a whole, a friend who works in the industry, recently told me, that the reason it’s gone through the roof, isn’t due to new drivers crashing, though that does cause premium increases, but mainly due to the costs of EV cars being crashed and written off. It’s had such an impact on insurance, that these cars, are the single highest reason, for premium increase.
This isn’t mentioned in the news, because, it’s all the Government want us to drive now.
what kind of prices do people have to pay in east london to insure then?
First car Renault 5TL £50.00, the door did fall off but 3rd party only I insurance was £100 annually. Mind you was only being paid £1.37and a half pence an hour. Don't even get started on the kids insurance, just under 3grand Costa 1.4 ecoflex. Then there the BLACK BOX tracking you every move
First car, Mk1 Escort, bought for £30 in the local pub. Windscreen wash squirted was a foot press on the floor next to the clutch, ha ha. Cheers guys and Kate 👍
My first car at 21 was a Peugeot 106 Rallye £535 fully comp ! 4 years later bought a new lotus Elise and insurance was £1070. The apr when you buy a used car these days is so high it’s frightening
I’m 52, never had a blame worthy accident and own a discovery sport. Just reinsured it last month and it cost over 40% more than previously!
My insurances on both my cars went up by 30% this year with no accidents, no points, no change in anything other than another years no claims discount
I remember before insurance categories changed & the groups were 1 to 6. I got a quote for a Renault 5 GT Turbo & fully comp was £260. 3wks later after buying the car I came to insure it & the insurance industry had a big shake up & changed groupings from 1 to 20 & my 5 Turbo was now £1200 & they'd only insure me for 9 months!
I had a 1977 Celica 16v I used to race on the beach, wish I still had it now, brilliant car for sliding round the track.
Hi Rick,
Had the mag ride issue but as I wanted to keep the car original I got exchange units from Polish company (4yrs ago now) paid about 1500quid.
Steve Gee.
Passed in 2017 , insurance quote for a 1.2 corsa was 2700 , ended up with a alfa mito 1.4 turbo for 2800 for 1st year insurance with no black box
Rather than just starting up the lambo, can you video it on the dyno? A before with stock exhaust and after for noise and power would have been nice but I suspect that opportunity has passed.
My van has doubled in insurance this month, my missus 20year old golf plus, learner insurance nearly 2500 notes 😂😂😂
What's the difference between a hedgehog and a range rover?...The pricks are on the outside on the hedgehog
Oz from Auf Weidersehen pet said that line 👌🏽
Hit the nail on the head with kids driving 'good' cars. My first car was an old mini bought out of the newspaper that even ended up being a ringer lol !!!
Mate at work is buying a good customer of ours 2019 carbon edition SVR for £42k which is what land rover offered him on a trade in for a new one which he’s ordered. He’s been quoted £9k to insure fully comp but not covered for theft or damage caused by attempted theft. It’s got a ghost plus another alarm on it. He’s going to get it and part ex it same day on a Q7.
Just to add to the insurance issue. Electric cars are not helping at all, insurance companies are bumping up rates because batteries are screwed after a small prang.
Insurance goes up and down.
1985 as a learner on a basic group 1 car I was quoted £95 tpft in Winchester . Unfortunately I lived in Northern Ireland and the same cover was £450!
20 years ago over there the cheapest way to insure a car was to buy a brand new car in a deal with 3 years insurance included.
My Striple this year was about £250. Classic policy was about £550 (with rac recovery)
I drive about a lot with my job and started to look into changing my petrol car for a BMW i3 as they are rather well priced until I got an insurance quote that was 3 x what my current vehicle costs. I gave that idea up rather sharpish as I can only see the insurance companies pushing insurance costs up for anything with 4 wheels and a large battery.
THE ONLEY ONE AT YOUR SHOP WITH A CAR I WOULD HAVE IS LAUGHING BOY CARL .
Insurance loophole , you can lodge a sum of money with the ( In Scotland) sheriff court to cover any potential claims from 3rd parties , and that is your legal cover . No claims = No payments .
It is how the Post office insured their fleet of vehicles when I worked for them .
My 17 year old son has an alfa mito 0.8 and his insureance is 3k with a black box
I own an Audi RS3 and guys on the forums are getting ridiculous quotes, same with BMW M3’s and M4’s. Just a nightmare right now.
Mate of mine has just been quoted 2200 for his 140i he’s getting shut and getting a golf r saves him 700 a year on insurance
@@kinglouiesshed8995it’s insane. I feel lucky paying under £500 for a highly modified RS3. The worlds going mad.
Great episode and enjoyed the discussion on the great car crash and insurance. My pensioner parents 1l fiesta doubled this year but they managed to get it down (live south east). I had a panic watching the video realising my 2008 Saab 9-3 is up for renewal in just over two weeks!! Lucky I got on that tonight, not sure how I will afford the £6.86 increase this year😂 I’m a village in norfolk 15 mins from snetterton, 42 yrs old, 5yrs NCB. Pumped in a 45k RR SVR and that came back at £1500, so location looks to be really critical here.
I’ve been saying for a long time there are so many muggles driving cars they shouldnt be in, but the cheap money has gone now and it’s all falling apart. Perfect storm, higher interest rates, cost of living pressures, cars are so expensive to repair and insurance payouts add up way too quickly 💥
I blame the manufacturers for the cost of insurance.. how can a headlight cost £6k?👎👎
My first nippy car was an Astra GTE....exhaust was meaty.... Wasn't until I took it to get a scorpion fitted and it was up on the ramp.... The previous owner had wedged a vacuum cleaner pipe in. Had to get a new manifold everything front to back.... Few weeks later the gasket went.....ffs what an experience pulling up at my girlfriends house with oil pouring all over the drive 😩
So Karl he is a WEAPON, but we don’t know what that means-
Wonderful perhaps? - of course he is.
Energy runs in his genes!
Amazing with the spanner’s,
Periodically he smiles.
On occasion, he adds content,
Now his heart will run for miles!
By using up the letters, that spell WEAPON you will see.
They describe the Legend of RE
That’s Cool Karl to you and me!
😂😂😂😂 you outdo yourself mate! 🙌🏼🙌🏼
@@REPerformanceUK you keep posting the quality content and I’ll keep posting the occasional pish poem! 😉😉🤣🤣
@@ScottB-NEdeal mate!!
£370 for my modified Clio 182 as a 34 year old. Fully expecting it to be around £500 come renewal in January
A question you may want to use for your Q&A:
With regards to OBD2 scanners for Huracan - would you suggest iCarsoft, OBDeleven or VCDS for the amateur DIYer?
Accurate DTC translation, Battery coding without BEM and service reset would seem the most used items.
Material costs at body shops along with huge hike in electricity for the ovens has meant repairs bills have doubled or tripled - another reason for insurance hikes
My daughter 17, passed her test pretty quickly earlier this year 1.0L 3 cylinder corsa that's 15 years old, she pays £275 a month.... yes a month with a black box. Its ridiculous. Oh and then I have to be a guarantor for the monthly payment because she can't legally sign the agreement because she's only 17. Mental
My Motor Trade insurance would have doubled this year from my usual provider. Shopped around, and managed to get cover at a sensible cost. The downside is I can't drive customer cars, only the work hack. I can work around that, as most are race cars anyway & not road legal, they don't want small businesses to survive , do they ?
When I was getting insurance in the UK they wanted over 5k for my shitbox 97 Civic even though I was well into my 30s because my US driving license wasn't seen as experience. It was cheaper for me to buy a 13 year newer Skoda and insure it because it was deemed a safer car with less risk. Insurance companies have basically made it impossible for first time drivers to have shitboxes. Madness.
Brilliant video, my insurance came up for renewal a couple of months ago and they said it was going to be double 😢😢, did however get a reduced rate after telling them I'd be going elsewhere
I pay 2.5K for a family car. Apparently the worst post code for insurance in the UK (E1 London). Sometimes i feel like east london is the cause of high premiums for the whole of the UK.
I’ve just bought my daughter a Mini Cooper d from Copart for her first car - admittedly not the most sensible choice but it only needs a bumper and a mirror and it was a third of the price of one on the forecourt, I’ve done a theoretical insurance quote for when she is 17 and passed her test - 10200 pounds ….. albeit a quote from my insurer who don’t specialise in young drivers , the guy told me insurance premiums have gone up 61% in the last 6 months 😭
My god,am l glad l left the UK and retired to Greece. Running a car here is unbearable when it comes to insurance etc.
.OK, so l run a isuzu 2.5 litre diesel twin turbo. My insurance has just gone up to just under 600 euros.
That's a 5 star insurance policy.
I mean 10,000 euros hospital for me and passengers etc. Fully com.
It's 10 yrs old now but still looks mint.
MOT takes 10 mins and emissions check is free. Year and year about. Do one ,one yr then the other the next. Totally brilliant here.
Oh, and l brought it for 18,500 in UK. Ex demo car from Germany.
It's now worth 24,500 euros. Low milage cand in good condition. Love Greece.
Plus a used car in good condition is usually 2,500 euros less than a brand new car of the same model.
Cars etc just don't depreciate here.
Stupid in UK Love Greece.
My lads first car was a mini one 1.4 that burns oil for fun. We paid a grand for it, and when he passed his test, they wanted 2100 to insure it!. So yeah, his car was paid for, and his insurance is on finance. My first car was a ford escort mk1 1100. Cost me 100 quid to buy and 250 to insure even then. It’s not changed really… I earned 28 quid a week back then.
The renewal quote for my Golf R was up by 35% so I hit the comparison sites and got it for the same as this year with £35 Quidco cashback 👍🏼
Now after the rant on insurance at the end i feel emotionally like karl 😕 😂
I was watching a video on RUclips a couple of days ago and the guy showed official stats showing an average of 90 range rovers PER DAY are stolen just in London. The insurance certainly plays a part in the car price drop but this massive depreciation is also happening in the USA across all vehicles but massively to premium SUV’s.
My first car was a Vauxhall Cavalier 1.6 L and cost £50, the insurance was £1200 in 1997 😂 kept it for 2 years then scrapped it!
Mate of mine ordered a brand new RR sport few months back ended up cancelling the order because best quote for insurance he could get was 6.5k, Land Rover insurance wouldn’t even give him a quote
I had a 22b in 2002 I think £1800 year on in insurance wish I still had it now 😢
I really enjoyed your conversations this week guys 👍
Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for watching.
@@REPerformanceUK Yes really good, thanks.
I’m not going to sell my car!
Best wishes
ive heard one of your fellas is a weapon on tour.
legend
Not sure how it is over there but here in Aus many kids don’t insure their cars because they can’t afford it, the shit hits the fan when they have an accident and get chased for repair costs
I have to say I was most shocked by the insurance discussion, mine went up £300 , I have a Range Rover evoke as a daily and a jag F type R awd , £1800 annual , thin I’m doing alright £500 excess , fully com. Rip off Britain, talking keys keep mine in a faraday box. Best discussion I’ve seen on here , didn’t realise the drop in trade prices either
£350ish for my 17 plate TTRS. They tried pulling my pants down on the renewal, phoned them up and told them to poke it and they dropped it to around the same I paid last year.
My son was bought a £700 seat Ibiza for Xmas by us to learn to drive in. Cost £1600 to insure. Passed his test in June, they wanted £4K to insure a £700 car. For his 18th he bought himself a mini one 2008 plate with a little trust fund we built for him. £1950. Costs £2100 for insurance. We pay for it as it’s £200 a month. At least he’s the policy holder and building a ncd. That’s with a black box as well. Can’t imagine how kids without parents who can afford to pay this get on. He’s in college so can’t afford that on a part time job.
It’s not about the value of the car, it’s the fact that young drivers load their cars up with their friends and are then more prone to crash the car causing personal injury claims. Cars are cheap compared to people.
@@timc5969 I’m fully aware of that, always been the same for young drivers, but as per Ricky’s point, £200 a month is finance payment money. It’s disproportionate. How are 17/ 18 years olds supposed to find that from when in full time education. I’m 48 and my policies on my cars have all gone up for no reason.
Interesting to hear about the insurance woos of the UK. Completely different setup to here in Oz, which that doesn't make sense. I run a fleet of vehicles up to 20, no named drivers, $32k AUD, with a $1000 excess per claim. Used cars are still higher here than they should be, but when you nation is on the way to no where shipping was, new ones are just trickling in now, and we have seen a 8.5% uplift in the cost of them in 12 months, talk about inflation.
I see all these high prices and i must be very lucky. me a 38 year old working as a vehicle technician, my fiesta st150 is only £250 a year full comp. (Only has 4,000 mile limit on the policy though)
Where would the full details for the golf be found is there an advert yet, cheers once again great content from you and your team

Keith B. Many thanks great channel, Love the engine room footage the most , but its all good and usually pick up a tip or two, However I was wondering what is the oil change service schedule on your new, very orange ( not for long ) Motul puffer jacket is ? Maybe its a disposable item and Mr Motul rep will be sought for a replacement item.
I'm sure I heard somewhere that insurance companies don't just share out the money from the majority to the few that claim.
I think they take the money, go out into the stock market etc and invest it to make a return.
I believe a high interest rate environment, makes it harder to profit from doing this. Thus pushing up insurance prices.
I had a pile of crap 1.0 metro van with windows in the back. Cost me £200 and then £800 a year third party only. The joys of trying to insure a car when you're a mechanic! On that basis unless someone is paying £4m a year to insure a £1m car then I win for the shittest deal. 😂
I have the same Snap On bobble hat as you already. I'll definitely be after an REP one.
I just got a quote for mrs on a 12k evoque!!! Full ncb over 40.... 1000k!!!! Nutterz
LFA costs €8,750 a year and its mileage limited. But given that a Tesla is €2500 its not unreasonable.
First car: 1985 Peugeot 205 1.1L XL £530 insurance at the time in 1991
Plenty mates of mine are not prepared to buy a new bike due to insurance costs. Keeping there current bikes. Crazy levels
Other think is car and bike replacement parts, crazy money for a headlight or a indicator or gear lever etc
My insurance has gone up for my bmw 520d se it’s not even a M sport and it’s a touring. Couple of years ago it was a couple of hundred quid now near 5 hundred. Motorbikes the same it is all going down the pan absolute madness.
Kitcar insurance is the cheat code for a bit of fun, my Dax Rush Hayabusa is about £250 a year.
Great content again it's the same with bike insurance
First car was 2015 fiesta zetec s and that was £2100 for first insurance, that was cheaper then a £500 car on insurance. £1300 for my Ibiza fr with 5 years no claims 🤔
I had someone go into the back of my can needed 2 new doors plus painting and it was just shy of 2000. All these people that say can get done cheaper are talking rubbish. I'm not saying you can't but is the cheap price the same level of work or is it cut corners second hand parts
My first car fist uno turbo £515.00 insurance that was in 1988 .now the guy who I work for his son who is 23 drives around in a range rover svr in Fleet kids shouldn't be driving around in these cars

Best cure for a weekend bender hangover? Monday Morning Work 😂😂😂
Insurance companies are also looking to keep expanding their margins by upping premiums well above risk - same as gas/electric/food prices etc, just conpanies scamming the people for their record profits
I had a 35k 15 plate rs4 one of the last direct injection v8s great car loved it but put it in for service £2.5k so thought time to move on as that is a lot to pay insurance £400 a year fully comp and tax £225 a year if remeber correctly. part exchanged it in for a Q3 sportback first edition 45TFSI which i got the dealer to discount by £7k, the sting in the tail because the list price was greater than £40k i have had to pay £445 a year in tax for the first 4 years even though it is euro 7 compliant and ULEZ as well and the insurance is £900 a year. I wish I had kept the the RS and got you to service it!
Wife wanted a banger for work duties, so a work colleague had a 1.4 tdci Fiesta for £500 with a years ticket and we thought it would save our decent car for the price of 2 of its tyres. Wife is 56, advanced driver , max no claims, no points and it was £400 fully comp to insure. If we wanted it third party F&T , it was even more. She is old enough to wear the Saga badge and eventually we got it for £200 with Saga . Weirdly, we have a Cupra Formentor 310 Golf R engined machine , worth about £35k and it costs us £360 PA for both of us to drive. Its all mad, insurance.
As for PCP's . We bought the Formentor outright in April. The dealer tried epically to get us to sign for a PCP with mental APR. We said no, we will buy it outright. The face from him was like I had raped his wife and murdered his kids. The figures were crazy. I 'think' it was around 6k in interest over 3 or 4 years.
£50 F reg mini in spearmint green with horrendous filler made flared arches. I paid more getting it towed away! 😂
If we all stopped buying vans till they sorted the security out they’d have no choice but to do it same with all these cars!!
I bought a 14 month old crafter for 30k plus 5 years ago, yet spent 4k on locks, ghost, 4k cameras, etc & insurance dont care & I am 50 with with over 22 years no claims. All insurance now is based on how many times police are called out to your postcode, as my insurance company @ time told me that. I get tucked up, as live by a football ground !!!!!!!!!!!

3k in East London family car. People just keep claiming whiplash, have their cars stolen. And not forgetting every day people are crashing. Sometimes I feel like East London is cause of high premiums around the whole UK. In my post code there are only two underwriters willing to insure😂

Love this but am I the only one with no clue for the bikes who Georgeeee Tommy Billbob are? Sure they’re you racing and raving besties but hard to follow I’d you don’t know.
Insurance prices all going up because of the poxy milk floats brigade. If it doesn’t sept combust on its own accord, they are a write off for next to no damage. Any sign of overheating / battery issue they get dunked in water for a week and scrapped.
Add up the write off for that lot, means we are all being stung.
Range Rovers of course different story all together given how easy they are to steal 🤣
Edit - wrote this before I heard the snippet on ev’s 😉

Hang on a second did Ricky just say that a Peugeot RCZ is a good car mate those things are a piece off 💩 held together with Hope's and dreams a truly shocking car I test drove a brand new one once I remember driving back to the showroom and getting out and just thought to myself for fuck sake that thing is nasty felt like it had custard filled dampers and the interior was falling to bits 😂 Hi Kate 💜
Car insurance costs are probably due to cars are very expensive to repair parts are so expensive. Plus little bit of a rip off as if you haven't ever claimed and it doubles, con. Bit like food prices have gone up due to costs 🤔and supermarket profits have shot up. Plus may be bit of net zero con price us out of cars gradually?
About to swap my C7 RS6 for a V8 R8. His insurance has gone up with the swap. But so has mine. How are both cars more expensive to insure?! 🙄
whats your insurance for the r8?
