I TOTALLY agree with the Don't Fret stickers!! I had them on there for about a week, found them to be more confusing than helpful, so we yanked them off and put on simple stripes (rather than dots, personal preference). After a couple of months, I feel I'm almost ready to take them off, since I am beginning to listen for placement as often as I look.
I’ve been watching your video for the past 6 months. AND YES YOU DID TAKE ME FROM a person who didn’t even know the violin didn’t make sound when you buy it. To someone who now can play without touching other strings. Still working on my vibrato tho. BUT THANK YOU. I’ve watched your old and new videos. Everyday and your 10 class course. Imma get on to 20 and 30 later on.
I dont know how to thank you enought! I am learning violin with you and I will buy your piano kit book 4. I have music experiense, but I want to learn the piano properly! thanks a lot, love u!
I've been working on learning the violin was a little while now. Intonation is a big struggle - but I keep on trying to look at my fingers to correct, but I keep on finding, (I don't use stickers btw because I have a small amount of musical experience so I can correct by ear over time), I keep finding that I can't actually physically see where my fingers are in relation to the relevant points along the fingerboard. I can only imagine how this is for stickers and how other beginners might struggle with less musical knowledge, it gets frustrating quite fast. I am not good enough to give advice on intonation, but one thing that helped me a lot was listening for the different in sound between the 4th finger and the next open string. Of course, on a well tuned violin they should sound almost the same, but it has to be pretty finely tuned... You can kind of them work by placing your fingers at some point between there and the end of the fingerboard but I don't know what you would do after that. I feel like violin intonation is much more complex than Ukelele or Piano, or anything else because the instrument almost - "likes" slightly sharper or flatter notes on specific notes. That's what I feel anyway... I'm pretty sure it's not just me because I periodically tune it to an electronic tuner. That's not just me right?
First of, thank you for being there for us ^.^ If you have some time id like your thoughts on what went through my mind :) Ok so, this is a bit of a stretch but Wouldn't it be wiser to train yourself to have perfect bow movement in various holding position, instead of devoting to the proven most useful and comfortable holding position ? I Understand that would prove to be torturously slowing the progress of new violinist such as me, but then... At some point, (given that you did not throw your violin by the window) wouldn't it be ideal ?
thankyou for these videos, I started following you out of curiosity but, as times have gone strange and things have happend one of my neighbours left me a cheep violin in his will, so move on to a few weeks ago and thanks mr delivery driver that electric cheep as chips violin is mine, when i am back behind the bar, | promise i will purchase your 30 course. in the meantime you have loads to explore, ps don't say i said but your place card for brow holds mistakes, nice one. so happy crimbo and a prosprous new thingy
Thanks for the video. Thankfully, I've instictively been holidng the bow more gently when beginnig, as I've done music my whole life; having a strong general sense of muscicality helps with pretty much any instrument, doesn't it? It can give you an inate sense of things.I was wondering, what do you do in terms of avoiding neck injuries? I was thinking about how the violin is in relation to the neck. I'm working on my posture of course, but in general, my neck geta a bit stiff I'm being especially careful right now in my beginning lessons, as I have my neck a bit strained from the tension created by a horrible fit of new glasses (it's amazing how much tension it can cause, when it's pressing against the temples like that)!
I never had 'dots' or tapes on my violin fingerboard when I was a beginner, my teacher back then was 'very against' them and he was very old school having studied with a student of Leopold Auer. He said that's what your open strings are for, so he always got me to check with my open strings and the other fingers which did not match an open string found their way against those guides.... So (as Alison will know), on G string you have first finger 'A' which makes your open A ring, then you have 4th finger D which makes your open D ring.. so on...on D string you have first finger 'E', 3rd finger is a 'G' and 4th an 'A' on A string you have 3rd finger as a 'D' and 4th as an 'E' (from 1st finger on G and on D you can then guide your first finger on A and E string as they will be right in the same place/next to those, just on a different string) and finally on E string you have 2nd (low finger) is a 'G' , 3rd finger is an 'A' this method worked very well not just with me but with all students and my ear developed/adapted very quickly... Sorry I am not saying this to contradict Alison who is very helpful and knowledgeable, just to say that no tapes can work just as well.
I played the violin when younger and decided to pick it up again so I'm relearning a lot again cause I'm rusty. Been playing for about 2 months now but I seem to have a bit of a problem. I play a song and need to rest for a few minutes cause my shoulder starts to hurt. Is that something common for beginner violinists? If so how do you overcome that?
Hi! I had that for over a year. Turns out switching my carbon fiber bow to a wood one instantly removed my pain! Also playing wigh a shoulder rest burns my arm. Try different setups, different chinrests, positions, bows, and with or without shoulder rest! Dont wait for the pain to go aoone if you can help it :)
Hi Allison 👋🏻 okay do you have any thoughts or recommendations on keeping the fingerboard clean and how often to do this? I guess there are two parts to this question... the dust from the rosin.. one should wipe it & the strings with a clean clothes after practicing each time right? Actually I took your advice and ordered the Sartory rosin, so maybe I won’t have this problem in the future. I am waiting for the package in the mail. I plan to get the fingerboard cleaned well at a violin shop before playing with new bow which I will only use the sartory rosin with!
Second part of this question... sorry this is long! How about cleaning off the oil that may get on the fingerboard from our fingers? I always wash my hands before practicing but sometimes still my fingers eventually become oily. So the question is.. would you recommend like getting the violin professionally cleaned every couple months or more? And would having some oil on the fingerboard be bad for the violin and/or playing? Thank you!! I should subscribe to your patreon if you manage to answer such a long set of questions!
"Decades of teaching"???? Did you start teaching when you were ten? Keep up the great videos...I have learned quite a bit and they provided a wonderful base for when I started taking lessons. As for a request, after hearing your arrangement of Canon Rock, I would really enjoy hearing your take on "Cliffs of Dover".

You are a inspiration to me
I had one of those don’t fret stickers on a used violin I got and took it off the first day, simply because of how obnoxious the colours were.
I never had 'dots' or tapes on my violin fingerboard when I was a beginner, my teacher back then was 'very against' them and he was very old school having studied with a student of Leopold Auer.

on A string you have 3rd finger as a 'D' and 4th as an 'E'
(from 1st finger on G and on D you can then guide your first finger on A and E string as they will be right in the same place/next to those, just on a different string)
and finally on E string you have 2nd (low finger) is a 'G' , 3rd finger is an 'A'

You'll get used to playing for longer in time.

Just use a clean dry cloth for both.
Incorrect BROW hold? If I'm trying to look pensive, I will usually tilt my head down and hold my brow between thumb and index finger.
Hello! I couldn't download your free music sheet, please tell me what should i do.
I dont know - try again?
Go to tube mate and do
