  • The Behringer Edge is Here! But how does it sound? Here its put up next to the Moog DFAM, and as far as comparisons go this was extremely good fun to make.
    The big takeaway for me was... if you haven't got one... YOU NEED 2 :)

    As someone who does most of their music in FL, I had to sell my DFAM because of the annoyance of not being able to tempo sync through even MIDI. I really dug the sound but it wasn't at all practical with my setup. The addition of that plus USB on the Behringer makes it way, way more appealing.

    Man that left/right combo at the end was amazing! Left me wondering, how could I emulate that with only one machine. One possibility would be to memorize the movements then do 2 individual recordings, not yet sure how hard this will be but I'm sure it will take a lot of practice. My second idea was simply to do one recording, put it on 2 different tracks and use plugins in the daw to make each one different enough to get the effect (who knows where this will lead, I doubt I'll get the same effect but I might get something interesting!).
    You've definitely inspired a whole new project, great work Starsky! Love your channel man.

    thx 4 the video! i think it sounds similar enough to consider it for the midi connectivity. that missing midi was why i sold my dfam. so i would be interested in the midi :D, can you sequence it from another device lets say the octatrack or something and maybe run the internal sequencer aswell and transpose the 8 step sequence every 16th step, and do this 4 times to get a 64 step -ish feel to it?? or hook it on a keystep and play it as a dual vco mono synth?

    • @StarskyCarr
      @StarskyCarr  Год назад

      No as far as I know the knobs are pure analog not connected to any control. So no transposing… as for creating longer sequences with a few I wonder where it could be possible somehow by triggering them sequentially?

    • @lesterfalcon1350
      @lesterfalcon1350 Год назад

      I'm taking it that the internal sequencer and the midi are going to be two separate things. Apart from clock sync you are choosing one or the other. I can using the 8 steps as an idea pads, they recreating the knobs positions in a the DAW sequencer, and then fleshing them out into something more evolved. Being able to recall the steps in a sequencer is a main selling point for me. As well as being able to do more complex rhythms or even simpler ones with 16th timings over a bar. This synth can have such a dominating sound, sometimes less is more, instead of playing every 8th note. I really hope the tuning stability is good on this, and once the master tuning is set, it can be left and the DAW can sequence melodic percussion ideas.

    Very good comparison video!
    What i find strange is that Behringer used a CEM (well almost a CEM) for the VCF. i would have very much preferred when they had used the Crave VCF in t his module also. The filter plays an essential role, especially in a small percussive sound source. Hopefully they will do that in a reworked version of the Edge. That would make it more compatible soundwise with the Crave also.

    I keep thinking everybody would be better off getting a Behringer Model D and a Korg SQ-1 than either of them. Or hooking an SQ-1 up to just about anything and pretending it's a DFAM. The SQ-1 is basically a much-improved DFAM sequencer (multiple quantization options, 16-step options, random options), and the Model D has better envelopes and an extra oscillator. Maybe I'm missing something...
    Although setting the PPQ on the SQ-1 is tricky. There's a chart on Korg's FAQ for the SQ-1, but it's difficult to comprehend, and obviously they should've put the info in the manual. But it's an awesome little sequencer. I think I figured it out, so if anybody cares:
    Korg SQ-1 = 1StP (4 PPQ) default
    - hold down START/STOP while turning on to enter global parameter mode
    - use SEQUENCER MODE selector to set step resolution
    - turn off/on again
    "WW" ALT = 1/4-note step = 4-bar pattern = 0.5 PPQ
    "Z" ORDER = 1/8-note step = 2-bar pattern = 1 PPQ
    "" TURN = 1/16-note step = 1-bar pattern = 2 PPQ
    "=>" ORDER = 1/4-note step = 4-bar pattern = 1 PPQ
    => CV DUTY = 1/8-note step = 2-bar pattern = 2 PPQ
    => CV SLIDE = 1/16-note step = 1-bar pattern = 4 PPQ

In that respect do you find the DFAM easier to control and to use for performance?

    • @StarskyCarr
      @StarskyCarr  Год назад +1

      Thanks… No they’re the same. I think I was talking about the tuning. They both have huge ranges so it can be difficult to dial in an exact pitch. The main difference is in the envelopes. I think perhaps the DFAM are analog and the Edge are digital, giving finer control on the DFAM plus a longer release, but unless you’re comparing side by side I don’t really think anyone would notice tbh.

    The DFAM looks sooooooo much better with those knobs! How solid are they, though? I would expect them to maybe be a little wobbly... But then, I would expect the Edge knobs to be about the same as the RD-9. It's funny that the chassis is mostly metal and could be used for self defense, but then the knobs are slightly flimsy-feeling.
    Regardless, Sweetwater isn't getting them till mid-August. I should've bought one from Thomann while they were in stock. I'm a little concerned that InMusic is gonna file an injunction before I get one LOL. I mean, now that Moog is owned by a company with lawyers and money. That’s one thing making an improved 808/909 40 years later … but making functionally-identical copies of two of Moog’s best selling products that are only 5 years old ...

    As a Crave owner I have to say, the form factor is really nice on these Behringer boxes. Only little downside is the position of the patch bay imho. As I do mainly ambient, I'm not much into the drum machine business, but for the price, I'm really tempted by the Edge to do some percussive experiments.

    These very little differences in sound make me wanna have more the EDGE than the DFAM. For sythbass or lead the moog sound would fit better, cause of its unexactness and "oily, sinister undertone" as Jason Tran describted, but for percussions and kicks i like the lttle better clearness of the behringer more. And what i like very much on the EDGE is the clock-divider!
    But after all, they sound nearly exact the same.

    I was really excited when i first heard that the Edge was going to be released a while ago. But now that its available, the more video's that i see of the Edge, the more i dislike the sound that it makes. I am sure that there are plenty of people who love the sound and what the Edge does, but it just sounds like everything that it does is extremely distorted and over saturated to be useful. I am still really considering purchasing an Edge in the next couple of weeks, but i am really worried that its just not going to scratch that itch i have for randomised drums and percussion sounds.

    If I were looking for something that can do rumbling style sounds, then Edge it is. But the DFAM clearly has a tighter low end and a filter with more overtones. What I'm looking for in this type of machine is something that doesn't just do boomy kick and bright hihat patterns. What I want is the modular glitch sound.
    I already have sampled kicks and hihats so what I need is tom and percussion patterns. For that, the DFAM is the winner.

      @daanleever6411 Moog didn't develop the instrument. They had an awesome idea, thats right. So kudos to Moog for being innovative, but the Edge is a complete redesign with own board, etc. So Behringer also put a ton of money into the development. To demand that nobody should produce an instrument like the DFAM is comparable to say that nobody should produce any subtractive synth, or Rhodes piano, etc. anymore. Plus, I don't believe that they both are in the same market. Moog is handmade, most likely higher quality and an original brand. People are buying the Edge because they can't afford the DFAM. And Moog fans who can afford it will still go for the original.
