Fun episode! Would be interesting to compare to the Bacardi version from Puerto Rico. 60 Minutes did a story on this a few years ago and apparently, the Bacardi version is based on the original recipe that the Havana Club owners took with them when they fled Cuba when their distillery was taken by the government.
Havana Club was founded in Cardenas, Matanzas, in 1934, by JosArrechabala. Bacardi was founded in Santiago de Cuba in 1862, by Facundo Bacardí. Two different companies, two different flavors profiles. Havana Club was always a better rum.
Hey great review! I really liked it as I enjoy my Havana Club in Canada! The US embargo on Cuba is really sad and not right. The Cuban people don't deserve an embargo! The bay of pigs was an US aggression on Cuban soil. Its ok to disagree with your government policies. Anyway I subbed!
I hate to agree with Dillon 😉 , but it sounds like he's right about complexity and balance, based on his experience. It seems like he had a narrow range of flavors (lower complexity), but that the few flavors he got were very well put together (higher balance). It also sounds like Dutch and Jules were right based on their experiences, because you got a lot more flavors (higher complexity), but some were overpowering others (lower balance). It's funny that you're all arguing that they mean the same thing, but because of your different experiences, you can't agree with the other's scores. Great stuff again!
Even in middle America there are overseas shops which have this and will ship, so it's not a zero for availability. It's possible. (That said, I never have. Nor did I pick one up last week in Italy when I saw it 30 times. Eh.)
I just picked up 11 bottles of uk shape bottle for 110 pounds uk..10 uk a bottle..to the bunker..i got a crate of talisker skye for 22 a bottle on a crate 10 bottles of Johnny walker black for 100 pound closing down sale .2 buffalo trace 30 pounds..chivas 12 at 12 .its been a good month.. really enjoyed my 10 pounds rum.. first time ..soooo good.love the leather from barrel char i supose .so good .get some .❤id say perfect..above price snobbery its so good.youd be hard pushed to find as complex a rum at way nearer 50 pounds. At 40pc bv. In my opinion...if you see it cheap buy it all..
£19 in London bargain price but not budget rum I can sip this neat happily but doorlys 12 is fantastic £40 looking for a four squares 2008 at auction hopefully under £100 for Christmas just opened Don Q Sherry cask so far so good 🥴
Seleccion de Maestros is far and away better than the 7 year IMO. The HC 15 year is way too expensive for what it is, so for me HC ends with the Maestros.
I respect that you consistently round down, but this video made me wish that you rounded to the nearest whole number, so that a 78.33 would be 78, and this 78.67 would be a 79. Just another way to make up for Jules and his "Perfect 9". 🤣
Doorly's 12 and R.L. Seale's 10 are better than 7 Anos . Seleccion de Maestros is the only Cuban rum with some proof to it at 45 % ABV and it's shot up in price to over $50 and not worth it compared to what is out there at that price but it is way better than the 7 Anos and less sugary. Better Spanish style rums are out there and non chill filtered, CS , no sugar added and better priced. Panama Pacific 9 year rum is less than $30 and mid 90's ABV with no B.S. in it and it's about $30. I can name at least 10 other Spanish style rums under $30 that are better than Havana Club or other Cuban rums
I’m cuban, but I agree with your comments. Havana Club is good and a good value maybe until de $50 or so for Selección de Maestros, but there are better rums.
Havana Club from Cuba is not the real deal it was a Stolen brand by Castro, but Castro never got the original recipe because the owners of the name and brand "Havana Club" the Arechabala Family took the recipe with them to the USA. Now with that said the one being sold today Cuba and exported around the world is an excellent Rum but as a Cuban myself I know the truth as to how Castro stole it and what he did to that Family. The original "Havana Club" has been produced in Cuba since 1878 by the Arechabala Family, they rebranded it to Havana Club in 1934 to bring it to the USA and it was regarded as the best Rum in Cuba. In 1953 Fidel celebrated the 75th birthday of the Rum with a 10-year aged Rum, Arechabala 75, the epitome of quality Rum from Cuba. Fidel knew it was the best Rum in Cuba and that's why he stole it.
The three of you together are EXTREMELY entertaining.
Thanks! 😃

A Cuban Havana Club drinkthru would be amazing.
first time i had this i drank the bottle. loved it.
Jules and his “10” score gives me 1984 vibes
Jules: "a 9 is a 10"
Pairs well with a Habanos cigar
Thank you for doing this!
I can get this for £19 just now in the UK.

We might have to start doing that to correct for Jules's "market correction!"

Unfortunately, the laws have changed again. You can no longer bring it back from Cuba or third countries for personal consumption. :(
