  • The U.S. Air Force's Next Generation Air Dominance (NGAD) program aims to field the world's first 6th-generation fighter to replace the still-dominant F-22 Raptor by the close of this decade.
    Here's a 5-minute crash course into where this program came from and what it intends to accomplish - from the fighter itself, to the AI-Enabled drone wingmen meant to fly alongside it.

    Apologies for the dropped audio! The missing portion effectively says:
    “One thing we can assess from renders released by Lockheed Martin, Boeing, and the US Air Force is an apparent emphasis on improved stealth against low-frequency radar arrays, as well as the high-frequency targeting arrays prioritized by current stealth fighter designs.”

    • @jdogdarkness
      @jdogdarkness 19 дней назад +1

      Problem is that figure is just for development.(not procurement) And when the per unit cost is announced it likely won't include its cost of operation, repairs, etc. Also, it certainly doesn't include the inevitable cost over runs & then inflation by the time it is being purchased. Our gov & corporations NEVER fail to promise a price then increase it by the 50% on big ticket tech like aircraft. All that said, I'm definitely excited to see what capabilities this project delivers.

      I actually wondered if maybe Northrop Grumman might be getting F/A-XX and that's why they dropped out of NGAD. Or at least, they're focusing their efforts on F/A-XX. Maybe Boeing will get NGAD. Lockheed Martin still has F-35 deliveries to make, and they've got a lot of drones they've been delivering. They're not exactly missing out. That way everyone gets planes for both the USN and USAF.
      But most realistically, I think all three companies will be making parts of the NGAD and F/A-XX programs. We're not just talking about two airframes here, but a whole bunch of them with the AI wingmen. Doubtful one company gets the whole package just for themselves. One company will make one manned fighter, one company will make the other manned fighter, and then all three will share the various drones the two fighters end up flying with.

    I'm really curious if I saw one of the prototypes for NGAD or a project leading to it. The first thing I noticed was that it appeared to be moving incredibly fast. I actually thought about space debris. As it got a little closer I could see it was a black triangle and it wasn't moving as fast as space debris, not it seemed to be booking it. It looked like it was really high up. It moved in a straight line and looked like a plane, but I didn't know of any plane that it looked like. I didn't really think about it until I read the black triangle page while wandering down a UFO rabbit hole on Wikipedia. Most of those descriptions don't match what I saw. Looked like a plane and moved like a plane. It's possible that it only looked like a straight sided triangle due to the viewing angle or some other illusion. I didn't recognize the plane, but I assumed it was around the size of a B-2 because that was the closest looking aircraft I knew. If it was much smaller than a B-2 then that would mean it wasn't as high up as I thought it was or moving as fast across the sky. I'm hoping it was something classified that they can soon reveal just so I can know whether I saw it or remember it completely incorrectly or if it was something new and hopefully as capable as it seemed.

    It's interesting that all the artists' concepts look more like a Northrop design (see: F-23, B-2, B-21) than a Lockheed one. Northrop bowed out, I'm sure, because they understood that Lockheed will be given the contract no matter what. Boeing has become little more than a "place holder" entry into the competition for the new fighter. Boeing is the excuse the DOD and USAF need to claim there is an actual competition for the aircraft. Northrop was smart to get out of it, thereby saving themselves many wasted man-hours and millions of dollars of company research funding. North American, Vought, Grumman, General Dynamics, Douglas, McDonnell and Fairchild/Republic are all gone thanks to various economic factors and deliberate government decisions. So now the Feds basically have Lockheed for Fighters, Boeing for commercial derivatives and Northrop for any scraps (bomber contracts that eventually get cut down to almost nothing). Boeings' "favorite" (i.e. well-funded) Members of Congress would not allow Northrop to build an Airbus design for the Tanker contract. But now Boeing has been given a contract to build a SAAB design for an Advanced Trainer. Funny how the rules change depending on which company gets the Benjamins.

    Honestly, the UCAV (Tinman) from the movie, Stealth or the F/A-37 (Talon) with the wings closed would look awesome. I also like the tailless X-36 concept plane from McDonnell Douglass/Boeing from around 1997. Any of those planes, as far as the look of them would all be able to pass as a next gen design. I'd like to see a reworked design of the YF-23 with updated technology. Many people already feel it was a superior aircraft to the F-22 and lost the contract mostly due to politics, but it was more expensive in certain aspects to produce, but also had better performance in said aspects. It still is a more than capable airframe.

    It could have more advanced active stealth via the distributed radar. I also haven't seen any of the plasma enhanced aerodynamics stuff that was about a few decades back, maybe that or some sort of jet stream injection again to change IR characteristics?
    Honestly unless they have something new, or are pulling from some of those "older" blue sky ideas we used to have, I don't see it being a massive jump outside of the connectivity perspective.
    Personally this loyal wingman thing doesn't feel like more than a detached pylon or decoy, I struggle to see how a single pilot could manage an autonomous wing without a second seat for the job. I think the chance of an AI enhanced loyal wingman going wrong is so high they are going to endlessly be developing akin to Tesla self drive.

A great solution would be CCA's with a VTOL capability, like the QuinJet. Also a good solution for Marine CCA's basedon Amphib Carriers. The USAF won't pay for a VTOL CCA.

Their missions are VERY different even if over-lapping. But they SHOULD still share the VERY best avionics, AI, drone wingman, weapons, counter-measures, etc. To remain dominant in Asia AND Europe, we MUST field the BEST weapons we can produce!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    The broken record would be for speed not altitude. In February the F-15EX was reported to have a top speed of mach 2.9. This is already getting close to the air breathing mach 3.3 record of the SR-71.
    The NGAD renderings all have a very high sweep angle that would support Mach 3+ speeds. There is no SR-72, the rumoured high speed aircraft would be the NGAD prototype that flew in 2020.
