- The U.S. Air Force's Next Generation Air Dominance (NGAD) program aims to field the world's first 6th-generation fighter to replace the still-dominant F-22 Raptor by the close of this decade.
Here's a 5-minute crash course into where this program came from and what it intends to accomplish - from the fighter itself, to the AI-Enabled drone wingmen meant to fly alongside it.

Apologies for the dropped audio! The missing portion effectively says:
“One thing we can assess from renders released by Lockheed Martin, Boeing, and the US Air Force is an apparent emphasis on improved stealth against low-frequency radar arrays, as well as the high-frequency targeting arrays prioritized by current stealth fighter designs.”

Well i guess america's stealth fighter is too stealthy, all we can see from it is the budget😂 RIP debt ceilings, "the greatest country in the world"
@@havefuntazarasu5367 debt is imaginary. as long as the lender has faith in the repayment of the loan... no problem.
NGAD insures air dominance and power projection. Very likely that a nation that can deploy such systems can pay off any debt, eventually.
how much of U.S. GDP is going towards this stuff? Compar
@@esobed1 use your simple logic, no need to talk about complicated things. If the debt are being paid, why were the bubble burst every 8 years? Why do you need the ceiling to be increased so high?
Do you know one of the reason why the roman empire collapse? Because they mint smaller coins to make more coins with less value. Thats your entire american economy is based off right now other than taking gold from other countries you "liberate" or lending money with extremely high interest to bankrupt a country with IMF.
Your petrodollar wont last forever, its crumbling against BRICS, and you are crumbling faster than the roman empire, at least they lasted for a millenia

No, it's not an error, he said something that was classified and muted the audio before publishing the video. But in my opinion, if you have to mute a video, that's less than 5 minutes long you might as well re-record it, because this jarring silence is just bad.

A video about the X65 and active flow control would be cool.
I would assume that technology will be integrated into the NGAD
I know this may sound insane, but $30 billion for the entire NGAD program, especially if that includes the loyal wingman, sounds like a bargain. Obviously $30 billion is an insane amount of money in general. But considering how crazy advanced and capable this platform will be, and how far ahead of other fighters it will be, $30 billion doesn’t sound like that much.
Problem is that figure is just for development.(not procurement) And when the per unit cost is announced it likely won't include its cost of operation, repairs, etc. Also, it certainly doesn't include the inevitable cost over runs & then inflation by the time it is being purchased. Our gov & corporations NEVER fail to promise a price then increase it by the 50% on big ticket tech like aircraft. All that said, I'm definitely excited to see what capabilities this project delivers.
It's not at all insane. The F-35 program over its entire research/engineering/testing period was $1 trillion. $30 billion is huge in absolute terms, but tiny in comparison.
@headoverheels88 That trillion dollar figure included the R&D, purchase of the airframes, maintenance, the personnel on the ground & pilot, operation costs, & infrastructure of THE ENTIRE FLEET over like a 30 year period.
30 billion is definitely a bargain, development costs are normally high so whatever process they've used this time around (guessing Ai) has saved a ton of money. Whenever they're production ready I think the price is going to be very appealing compared to F22/F35 programs.

I have a theory,
Lockheed Martin is gonna get the NGAD program
Boeing is getting the FA-XX
Northrop Grumman is Producing the Bomber fleet
That’s gonna be so cool
That’s a view shared by many
I'd prefer if the USAF was buying both the LM and Boeing designs, so there would be meaningful competition through the development phase. In which case, NG should get the Navy contract.
@@jeffbenton6183 no it’s time to go from development to operational. Pick the best design and mature it.
I actually wondered if maybe Northrop Grumman might be getting F/A-XX and that's why they dropped out of NGAD. Or at least, they're focusing their efforts on F/A-XX. Maybe Boeing will get NGAD. Lockheed Martin still has F-35 deliveries to make, and they've got a lot of drones they've been delivering. They're not exactly missing out. That way everyone gets planes for both the USN and USAF.
But most realistically, I think all three companies will be making parts of the NGAD and F/A-XX programs. We're not just talking about two airframes here, but a whole bunch of them with the AI wingmen. Doubtful one company gets the whole package just for themselves. One company will make one manned fighter, one company will make the other manned fighter, and then all three will share the various drones the two fighters end up flying with.
Could you do a video about the future of Shorad?
Will short range air defense provided by the laser stryker? Will the Bradley replacement IFV XM30 function as an anti air cannon? Should the US look at the SkyRanger / Skynex / millenium gun system? And will there be a Stinger replacement with a better battery, targeting, and most importantly more affordable? Or is this affordable future the APKWS guidance upgrade for the cheap and plentiful Hydra 70mm rocket? Should we slap that on Avenger Hummvees? Or IRIS-T? And what are M-shorad Strykers doing?
Could you make a video about how the entire 3rd world is waltzing through your bitch made state?
Alex is predominantly an aviation expert.
Now we finally know what's up with that Boeing X-37. The flying space shuttle wingman.
I can’t wait to see what NGAD looks like. I worked on some early development stuff for one of the potential propulsion systems. We had a big meeting one day to discuss the project and they showed the the current designs from each of the airframe manufacturers, but alas I was out of office that day and they never showed us again after that. 😢
It’s all classified.
I get the feeling it won't look that cool. If they can offload most of the heavy lifting to the loyal wingmen drones, stealth should be enough.
But we all know they're not going to stop at better stealth.
@@protorhinocerator142 there are MANY ways to improve the RCS of a vehicle. That is literally as much as I’ll say about that.

Ground news is actually really nice.
It was spotted in a transparent portable aircraft hanger at Area 51 by a planet labs satellite in 2022, I thought the base would be tracking anything passing overhead!😅

Boeing’s and Lockheed Martin’s quality control, staying on budget and time are their ultimate stealth technologies, we never see them. 😳
awesome vid Alex!!!
This is the Key reason neither Russia, China, India or anybody else cannot make me nervous. As you have explained many times. We are at minimum 3 decades ahead of any copycat. Stesling the final design and building it, or deploying it are 2 very different things. Any peer level conflict will be settled in the air and space before anything happens on the ground. Let that (b21 deployed, gps guided,) sink in... We have left our enemies so far behind that you need radar to find them.
The USAF should buy both competitor's fighters to prevent the sole-sourcing problems that plagued the F-35. (Heck, the ATF program likely would've had a smoother development had the F-22 and F-23 both been racing each other to get in development)
Every time a military technologies reporter says, "modular," everyone takes a shot!
I'm so excited for this.
I think that, even with the CCAs our combat fleet will be way to small for a serious near peer conflict. We're talking 1000 CCAs, 200 NGADs and a 1000 Block 4 F-35s... We need at least 5000 tactical air platforms....
2:23 It's all Good, Devil Dog...I recognize this quietude for what it is: You're demonstrating the sound they Actually make when they're in low earth orbit. Right..?

Don’t forget, Boeing commercial and Boeing defense are fairly separate companies
It will be interesting to see what news comes out!
I'm ready to see some photos of the new planes😊
I'm really curious if I saw one of the prototypes for NGAD or a project leading to it. The first thing I noticed was that it appeared to be moving incredibly fast. I actually thought about space debris. As it got a little closer I could see it was a black triangle and it wasn't moving as fast as space debris, not it seemed to be booking it. It looked like it was really high up. It moved in a straight line and looked like a plane, but I didn't know of any plane that it looked like. I didn't really think about it until I read the black triangle page while wandering down a UFO rabbit hole on Wikipedia. Most of those descriptions don't match what I saw. Looked like a plane and moved like a plane. It's possible that it only looked like a straight sided triangle due to the viewing angle or some other illusion. I didn't recognize the plane, but I assumed it was around the size of a B-2 because that was the closest looking aircraft I knew. If it was much smaller than a B-2 then that would mean it wasn't as high up as I thought it was or moving as fast across the sky. I'm hoping it was something classified that they can soon reveal just so I can know whether I saw it or remember it completely incorrectly or if it was something new and hopefully as capable as it seemed.
I believe you, I've spotted some interesting things in space over the years. I always assume it's vehicles being tested and guess I'll see them 10-20 years later when they're not classified anymore lol.
I wanna see that Mach 8 Gen 7 ET back engineered stuff. Skunkworks you’re holding out on me.
It's interesting that all the artists' concepts look more like a Northrop design (see: F-23, B-2, B-21) than a Lockheed one. Northrop bowed out, I'm sure, because they understood that Lockheed will be given the contract no matter what. Boeing has become little more than a "place holder" entry into the competition for the new fighter. Boeing is the excuse the DOD and USAF need to claim there is an actual competition for the aircraft. Northrop was smart to get out of it, thereby saving themselves many wasted man-hours and millions of dollars of company research funding. North American, Vought, Grumman, General Dynamics, Douglas, McDonnell and Fairchild/Republic are all gone thanks to various economic factors and deliberate government decisions. So now the Feds basically have Lockheed for Fighters, Boeing for commercial derivatives and Northrop for any scraps (bomber contracts that eventually get cut down to almost nothing). Boeings' "favorite" (i.e. well-funded) Members of Congress would not allow Northrop to build an Airbus design for the Tanker contract. But now Boeing has been given a contract to build a SAAB design for an Advanced Trainer. Funny how the rules change depending on which company gets the Benjamins.
Northrop Grumman only dropped out in the airforce 6th generation bid,it’s still in the race for the navy’s 6th version, hope I’m right there.Northrop Grumman is my favourite for the navy’s version!
It is what we like to call the “you lose” plane
The F-22 is already a you lose plane.
The NGAD will be "I own Boardwalk with 3 hotels and I'm holding 7 aces - suited. And also, Yahtzee! and I won the Super Bowl barefoot."
Even if the NGAD is not as maneuverable as F-22, and some enemy gets LUCKY enough to stumble upon an NGAD and get inside visual range, I expect the NGAD would simply call in a robot wingman to take care of the situation.
I'm going for a B21 derived combined cycle enginged missile truck AWACs combo with a fleet of loyal wingmen whilst also able to direct manned planes.
It's kinda funny how they're just basically in the process of building Skynet.
Have you covered the Ground Ordnance New Army Domination (GONAD) program?
Alex kowaliuk here I always watch your channel my dad changed the computers on the f15 and we loved to talk jets though I really don't believe jet powered fighters are still the state of the art for some reason we're still pretending they are but what do I know , cool show.

Alex I’ve said before that you need to take a breath every once in a while amidst your excitement in the topics we like, but at 2:20ish is pushing it.
Alex, regarding "Hypersonic". At hypersonic speeds doesn't the plasma prevent radio communications? Also as for being maneuverable as in hypersonic cruise missiles. Isn't the heat build up at low altitude prohibitive?
Hey! I saw one of these the other day.
I wonder if this will use laminar flow manipulation for controls? Changing the air around the surface to effect the attitude of the aircraft eliminating control surfaces???
I know China probably already has complete information on this aircraft either by hacking or espionage, but I still find these videos fascinating.
The question is how long it'll take them to do anything about it.
@@acefofficial Indeed! Mimicry takes time!
So long as all the systems can use the same advanced avionics package and can be upgraded for newer avionics in the future, they'll stick a round for a while, unless the Air Forces, small batch fast evolution concept takes off.
I’m not sure if you have done a video on R&D itself but it would be cool for everyone to get an idea of how it works
The development of the drones aka CCAs will be more difficult than the manned aircraft component of the NGAD itself.
We have been happy with the demonstrators performance in testing. However, there is more work to do on integrating all the systems. Mach 2.8 in final production form is the target.
My immediate thought was someone redacted the audio
Alex, why is the B-21 Raider smaller than the B-2. Shouldn’t a larger payload capacity be important to bombers.
Stealthier and more fuel saving
Stargate SG1 Season 4 episode "The Other Side".
Honestly, the UCAV (Tinman) from the movie, Stealth or the F/A-37 (Talon) with the wings closed would look awesome. I also like the tailless X-36 concept plane from McDonnell Douglass/Boeing from around 1997. Any of those planes, as far as the look of them would all be able to pass as a next gen design. I'd like to see a reworked design of the YF-23 with updated technology. Many people already feel it was a superior aircraft to the F-22 and lost the contract mostly due to politics, but it was more expensive in certain aspects to produce, but also had better performance in said aspects. It still is a more than capable airframe.
hey, can you do a video on whats going on with boeing and where it started?
CCA's can be deployed now. The current US fighter aircraft can easily serve the role of leader of a drone wing.
2:10-2:27 you have one of your audio dropouts. The fact that this occurs exactly at an edit point in your video would suggest to me that your audio system is not the problem. Is there an option in Davinci where you can mute your video's sound? I remember you said you were using AI for a few different things? Is editing videos one of them?
While I’m extremely excited about these new fighter programs, I cant believe that with all the technology we have that we will still be limited by fuel capacity. I feel like it’s about time they introduce alternative propulsion.
It could have more advanced active stealth via the distributed radar. I also haven't seen any of the plasma enhanced aerodynamics stuff that was about a few decades back, maybe that or some sort of jet stream injection again to change IR characteristics?
Honestly unless they have something new, or are pulling from some of those "older" blue sky ideas we used to have, I don't see it being a massive jump outside of the connectivity perspective.
Personally this loyal wingman thing doesn't feel like more than a detached pylon or decoy, I struggle to see how a single pilot could manage an autonomous wing without a second seat for the job. I think the chance of an AI enhanced loyal wingman going wrong is so high they are going to endlessly be developing akin to Tesla self drive.
3 place. I'll take it!
This system sounds great however it does have an Achilles Heel. Autonomous swarm drones. In the future those who have the most swarms wins.
When you extended the CCA concept to USN CVNs, you will have to allow for catapult launches and carrier landings at night and in bad weather, using AI. YIKES!!! A great solution would be CCA's with a VTOL capability, like the QuinJet. Also a good solution for Marine CCA's basedon Amphib Carriers. The USAF won't pay for a VTOL CCA.
Lost sound for a while there at the midpoint (CC, too)
Just letting you know when you show the first still image of NGAD there is about 10 seconds of silence check your editing lol by the way I like the video
Audio track muted from 2:11 to 2:24? Must have said something "they" didn't like. . .
There is something that does worry me about these AI drones. Imagine that a big mission is unfolding, and while they are on route, the drones turn on the manned aircraft and destroy them. Either because they have been hacked, or a virus had been planted in them earlier by a foreign adversary.
Can we get a video on the manta ray USV that was just recently mentioned?
There ought to be a draft of all LLM trained military intelligence.
By the Grace of God and human ingenuity, I hope we've learned that we've learned from the F-35 that it's VERY difficult to share the same airframe among AF, Navy and MC!! Their missions are VERY different even if over-lapping. But they SHOULD still share the VERY best avionics, AI, drone wingman, weapons, counter-measures, etc. To remain dominant in Asia AND Europe, we MUST field the BEST weapons we can produce!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The broken record would be for speed not altitude. In February the F-15EX was reported to have a top speed of mach 2.9. This is already getting close to the air breathing mach 3.3 record of the SR-71.
The NGAD renderings all have a very high sweep angle that would support Mach 3+ speeds. There is no SR-72, the rumoured high speed aircraft would be the NGAD prototype that flew in 2020.
