The demands are unrealistic. How on earth do you assess, pass medication effectively, and chart a full assessment on EACH patient via cerner within 1 hr post handoff without cutting corners? And clinical coaches/managers are monitoring your documentation. It's even worst when you're an orientee and the preceptors never intended on training anyone and he/she is very vocal about it. Yet, that preceptor gets the utmost respect from management because he/she had been a nurse for xyz amount of years and is known to be very knowledgeable. However, that preceptor has been very unkind.

I agree with everything you stated. I was a bedside nurse for 30yrs starting in ICU and the last 12yrs I was a night shift Nursing Supervisor. So I’ve seen both the good and bad of both sides. When I first started I thrived on the emergent care of ICU pts. At the end of the day I felt like I had accomplished something good helping people even though I was tired. Of course back then in the early 80’s we worked 8hr shifts. Sounds good huh? I worked 7 days straight with 2 days off and then 3 days on with another 2 days off. I had 2 little children at home and I can’t remember a holiday that I didn’t look haggard in the photos. Working in the ICU you could either have easy shifts or hard ones. Feast or famine! You are right about the schedules, you work for the business and not for your own life. I made decent money but I worked for it too. It did irk me knowing that some HS graduate working on an assembly line was making comparable to me after working up to that much money over the years and having to get a 4yr degree to boot! But there is no logic. My only joy is knowing that the people who made nursing into a business instead of a caring place to go for patients will someday get old and need the very poor services they created. But then I’ll be old too and also receiving the same. As a nursing sup I had to dish out what nurses hate and that’s being harassed to come into work on your day off because nurse Nancy who always calls in, called in once again. When we were short I worked the floors it assisted with triaging ER patients. I was the beck and call nurse. The food service, janitor, engineering, security, pharmacist, materials management, staff assignment director of traffic, etc. You name it I was your girl. In my down time I taught CPR recertification for 10yrs for the convenience of the night shift and taught cardiac dysrhythmia classes when needed. I recently retired after 42yrs because of all things my knee blew a gasket and I fought to keep working from the end of January till the middle of August riding a scooter just to keep working. Finally I had to throw in the towel when I tore my Achilles’ tendon on my affected leg and a tibial tiny fracture and a cyst on my femur bone just from trying to walk while working. Cause a working nurse can’t just sit a scooter all night. So I finally retired at 65yrs of age, even though I probably would have worked another 2yrs if I had a good leg. If someone asked me these days if they should go into nursing I’m afraid I’d have to try and discourage them because of the lack of respect that a nurse is given from all angles. From management, patients, other nurses, families, departments, doctors, etc. It makes me sad what this profession has come to in the end. I was proud to be an excellent nurse. It was my calling.

I was doing 3- 12hrs overnights a week for 2 years at a hospital straight out of Nursing school. I tried to hold on to bedside Nursing because of what I thought were good benefits. But between poor management, petty office beefs and being high pt caseload, I dreaded getting up to go to work. Then I had a baby who was diagnosed with autism early on. That was it for me, . I left the hospital and have been doin home care PRN. I was making the same amount working with 1 patient in home care that I was making working with 6-12 patients (depending on acuity). And I get to choose my days and have a lot of autonomy in my patient care! I'm not going back to the hospital.

I feel you on the scheduling. I have been at the same healthcare system for 27 of my 28 years of nursing. I had always been able to have Mondays off because I bowled on Monday nights (before the pandemic). I transferred to a hospital very close to my home. Even though we have self scheduling, I was told I can't have Mondays off. So even though I only work 3 days I can't have at least one day off of my own choosing. You are also correct about the raises. They stopped giving me raises a few years ago. Even though my reviews are stellar. I am capped. They do give a few hundred bucks in leu of and hourly raise. You are correct on a third note. They want so much from the nurses. We are now given a script on how and what to say to the patients. And they actually audit us. The charge nurse or a mole will come in to listen to how and what we say to the patients. I AM DONE!
I actually have my own business. I own an Adult Family Care Home that has been licensed since last year. I don't have any clients yet. For some reason I had been afraid to leave the hospital for a few reasons like insurance, fear of not having a steady check etc. Again, I AM DONE!
I will finish out this last schedule. Then....I AM DONE!!!!!

And I have friends who work the same field as me in hospitals, and tell me how I don't do anything at the ED and they get so many patients and learn so much at the hospital. Those friends make the same money as me per hour, but work yes much more than me. But why do I have to feel shame for working part time, and choosing to work in an ED? I am being smart with my time and energy and well being.

I was recommended for a daisy by a patient's wife because based on a recommendation I made for an ultrasound on his lower extremities after my shift assessment, the patient ended up having 5 stents the following day. I actually was just glad that they appreciated it and didn't pay further attention until a nurse leader with 40 years diverse experience told me "no one deserved the daisy more than you". I honestly didn't even know who won it but later found out I wasn't even mentioned in the 50 nominees and the person who won "helped arrange transportation for a discharged patient by contacting the house supervisor for a lyft". I honestly hope they did this based on genuine processes. I have always believed in professionalism, hardwork and respect and have never believed in people pulling the race card, however for once I just thought, "is daisy not appropriate for me as a black man". I eventually erased those thoughts, continue to do my best for my patients but never helped out when am off duty like I did previously. I also switched to PRN and cut off all my full time obligations.

It's about the patients. Your pt's recognize you. You've blessed that pt. You've blessed that family @ ths BS. When you've treating them well & efficiently & given them very good care, they look for you to come back the nxt day & the nxt day. THEY remember you for yrs to come. (using a lot of abbreviations cause I'm talking to nurses). We get a chance to help people when they are at their lowest...& sometimes at the end of their lives. Still good stuff. FYI: I've worked health care 34 yrs. I've nursed for 25 yrs. Went in to semi retirement this yr d/t caring for mom & pastoring. but do love helping people.
I have noticed a trend of nurses coming on board soley to make money. The love of pt's seems to be weigning. So floor nurses do move quickly...into educational clinician or specialty dpt. or mngmnt of some sort. So it seems they like the pay, but not the pt's that bring the pay in.
People, pt's need continuity of care. So the down side for the pt is a new nurse every shift for 4 days....I'm just saying....Still enjoy the video content. It's almost like a soap opera..lol

Oooh speaking of that Daisey award stuff. It's a popularity game. Unless you're in a click with a charge nurse who's buddy buddy with the manager, forget about recognition sweetie. Charge nurses are "supposed" to be the managers eyes and ears but they're only reporting errors and complaints from family/patients if the nurse involved is not their friend. If a complaint or mistake involves their friends, the matter will go unreported. If the matter is reported that charge nurse will sugarcoat the matter and the managers will not make a big deal of the matter. The whole "you're not up to par" has alot to do with what a charge nurse thinks of you vs his/her buddy. The manager not on the floor so half of what he/she knows about your performance is coming from a peer.... Yes ma'am

I was a nurse for 30 years with the NHS in Scotland. Things as far as nurses go haven't changed one bit in relation to the hours expected to work, no acknowledgement of nurses' needs in relation to down time and time to de-stress. Also nothing has changed with the unrealistic burdens put on them and the poor pay for what nurses do (and other professionals within the NHS). As soon as an anonymous manager with no nursing or medical experience started to tell me to send patients home to free up beds (usually our poor elderly patients were targeted) that was it, I quit.

Love your spirit and sharing so much that is very important !!! First most to any healthcare worker all across the board - that has suffered in any way to racial CRAP - my heart is with you💔. I am a light skinned RN. Irish redhead. Probably with several bloodlines as I was adopted and who knows. None of that should ever matter. But it plays out as always. Way too many ugly people in this world !!! I started out 30 plus years ago. First as a Paramedic - then finished nursing. Mostly in ER. So much has changed. I have worked in ER, home health, infusion nursing, flight nursing and travel nursing. Have seen plenty of what you present. And it makes me so very sick and tired !! Although I am writing this as a white nurse - I understand and my heart is with anyone who has to deal with racism. Apparently there is still a long way to go. However - if your heart is called to nursing - RISE UP. Follow your ❤️. The changes with computers, charting, staffing issues, never enough time to finish duties or actually be with your patients - all fall back on management - budgets - an entire pyramid of total CRAP !!! Do your research at any job you are looking at. What is their staffing. How many nurses on shift. Huge question is always - what is the ancillary staff. How many CNA's or Techs. If going into any intensive care - even as travel nurse - know your resources. Feel comfortable with those - all of those - before taking any assignment. The more questions you ask - the better. Do not get sucked into sign on bonuses until you understand them fully and have them in writing - to review. As an RN or any health care worker - you have those rights !!!! Protect your license and do all of the homework that you can. You can negotiate the terms of orientation and employment. They rarely tell you this. So go to the table with what YOU expect. Get it in writing. It is your right as a professional with any license !!!!

Looking back, I'm very thankful I only used my fresh youth to experience 3 12's (plus mandatory weekends every three weeks and mandatory overtime every 6 weeks). I'm now 28 and I can't imagine doing 3 12's EVERY week. NO WAY. I choose my days, shifts, and I do two 12's one week, and three the next. On top of being PRN, I'm the charge nurse most of the time so I'm not AS physically worn out.

Kendra, a timely video. I just sent an email to my manager requesting to be PRN in the near future. I've been a nurse not even 2 years and I'm repositioning myself for an I.T. career (with the option of per diem nursing work as a freedom side hustle) because the health care field does not pay you what you are worth --- period. Currently, we have been so low staffed that I did not get a chance to chart on my patients until the end of my shift and finally left the building 90 minutes after. I'm a 0.6 FTE so I have a "taste" of that extra freedom, but I completely agree that PRN would make enduring these conditions at least bearable if I could choose when and if I choose to work.
