So this is cliche to say, but this movie kinda saved my life. Grew up my whole childhood watching all the original Toho Godzillas so I’ve been a Godzilla fanatic my whole life. Well last October there was a big hiccup in my life and I really considered ending it all. Then this movie came out and not only is it arguably the greatest movie of our big guy, but the message of “live” inspired me to keep going
I don't see anything cliche about that at all. aren't Koichi Shikishima and Tachibana amazing characters? amazingly portrayed by amazing actors? the fact that you used that message to keep living despite what you were facing, I'm sure the director would love to know that his piece of art helped out in that capacity.

Not well known in America… The intensity of American air raids was greater than in the movies. 210,000 people died in the atomic bomb in Japan. 380,000 people died in US air raids. The final death toll in Japan was 3.1 million. Japan literally went down to zero. Then Godzilla appeared and became -1.0
The Visual Effect Supervisor was Takashi Yamazaki - the writer/director - and he spent a lot his spare time, between filming, working on each effects shot personally. That's the main reason the effects are so good and the budget is so low.
Director Yamazaki said in a dialogue. The production staff keeps improving my production suggestions, calling them 'lame,' but I can't complain because they are indeed getting better. The 25-year-old staff consumed 5 TB of data for water effects processing. They were all doing difficult scenes and easy jobs were put on the back burner. They had no choice but to try using their own PCs, but they were old and time-consuming. So he bought a new PC at his own expense and wrote the CG of the trees one by one on the mountain.
nobody's ever cried at a Godzilla movie before, until this one. so many reactors that I've watched shed a lot of tears. the director just hit this one out of the ballpark and into orbit! he raised the bar so high for the franchise, will anyone be able to top Minus One? hard to imagine.
@@spectralsymphony oh, that's right. while I didn't shed any tears for that one, I do remember hearing that others did, and I did see why they would (actually, I did kinda come close).
Tachibana was a mechanic for the Kamikaze Suicide Squad. He had been maintaining the flying coffins of his friends who took off and never returned. Although it is not depicted in the movie, I think he must have been very sad. Shikishima was also a member of the suicide squad, but he did not take off. Shikishima tried to detonate himself with Godzilla as atonement for the war, but Tachibana gave him a way to live. Tachibana was finally able to make arrangements for his friends to survive.his war is over.
This is absolutely one of the best movies ever made! I too know little of the franchise but I can tell there was love in this. And the actors are amazing. This deserved a million more awards.
New to the channel. I’ve seen over 20 Godzilla Minus 1 reactions, just because I love this movie. And it is good to see your mom on the channel. Not too many on RUclips. Most are young people; sadly, some that does not know what a kamikaze pilot is.
Great reaction and foresight. After Godzilla is destroyed, all the salutes were not towards Shikijima, but to a well-fought enemy, which in this case is Godzilla.
When the bombs were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki the explosion seeded the clouds and caused a Black Rain(Kuroi Ame) to fall shortly after. That rain, filled with radioactive particulates coated everything. Because homes and infrastructure were destroyed survivors could not change clothes so those particulates remained on them. With few sources of running water people boiled what they could find to drink, but the Black Rain had washed into the water they found and unknown to them boiling would not remove the radioactive particulates. So that rain that falls after Godzilla strikes with the nuclear breath has very deep significance in Japan as detailed in a 1965 novel named Black Rain. The book was made into a Japanese film in 1989 but it was overshadowed in the US by Ridley Scott's film of the same name, which also came out that year, about two American Cops who go to Japan and become embroiled in a case when the prisoner they were extraditing to Japan escapes.

Also, ejection seats weren't considered necessary for most of WWII. However, as plane technology improved, and, the Germans developed their jet engine technology, the increase in speed made it impossible to jump out of the cockpit, so, ejection seats were created. The writing on Shiikishima's plane's ( The experimental prototype, Shinden) ejection seat is in German. I'm not fully versed in this, so, someone correct me if I'm incorrect.
Japanese also didn't like to use parachutes, from their experiences in the South Pacific. They quickly learned that the IJA and IJN didn't have an SAR service, so if you landed in the sea, you'd either die of exposure and thirst or get eaten by sharks--and if you got to land the islanders were not always friendly (hell sometimes they were headhunters and practiced cannibalism). so they figured a quick death was preferable. Australian author Michael Claringbould stated this fact during an interview I saw 'somewhere on RUclips'.
As a little trivia note, the more upbeat music most people associate with Godzilla is actually not Godziilla's theme, but was originally made as the leitmotif for the JDF (Japanese Defense Force). The more somber and dark music that was played during the first full-body shot of Godzilla attacking Ginza in Godzilla -1 was designed to be Godzilla's music.
During my trips to Japan I visited Hiroshima..and stood by the Atomic Dome....It was surreal....After seeing it so many times over the years in books and documentries..to be actually stood there seeing it with my own eyes was something I never thought I would ever do....I also visited the Peace Museum and gardens. •Godzilla attacks the vulnerable city as Tokyo begins to rebuild from the war's devastation. Originating from Odo Island, the monster was exposed to the Bikini Atoll nuclear tests, causing him to grow significantly and gain the ability to unleash an atomic heat ray from his mouth, similar to an atomic blast. •Godzilla represented the fears that many Japanese held about the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki and the possibility of recurrence. As the series progressed, so did Godzilla, changing into a less destructive and more heroic character. •This incarnation of Godzilla harbored strong grudge toward humanity for nuclear tests which irradiated him in the first place not unlike the original iteration of the character, though his case is much worse as he was already hostile towards humans prior to his mutation. •In the 1954 film, Godzilla is portrayed as a tragic monster who lashed out at humanity by destroying any boats that he encountered and later rampaging across and destroying Tokyo in retaliation for the destruction of his home and death of his family by an American H-bomb test. •Godzilla is buoyant. It isn't actually "standing" on anything, but instead it has a natural ability to go vertical due to its aquatic nature using a swim bladder and treading water to stay vertical in the deep sea.
* Noriko (female lead) might have been infected with G-cells (black mark on her neck) and survived the blast because of its regenerative power. * Takashi Yamazaki (director) explained that post-war Japan was at “zero” and the attack by Godzilla, Tokyo was at “minus one” - hence, Godzilla Minus One. * Amazing that Godzilla Minus One (2023) was made for under $12 million - just 1/13 of the budget of Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire (2024). HOLY CRAP, do I believe the Oscar hype!!!! Minus One was beautifully done. Shikishima struggling to deal with survivor's guilt & PTSD suddenly being thrust back into a war against the very creature that put him in that spot to begin with was s hell of a fight. All while struggling to accept the family dynamic with Noriko and Akiko? Amazing. *SIDE NOTES:* I wasn't expecting Noriko to have survived getting caught in that shockwave from the Atomic Breath, but those Godzilla cells literally saved her neck. The title "Minus One" aludes to the bombings of Hiroshima & Nagasaki setting everything at 0, but Godzilla's arrival sent it down below 0 to -1.
The 50's had many U.S. flicks about monsters created by nuclear testing in the desert. The one I remember best is, "Them!", about giant ants that nest in the underground drainage system of Los Angeles. James Cameron's, "ALIENS" is, essentially, a remake of, "Them!".
Awesome reaction guy’s ❤ I love the older Godzilla movies so much but this movie is by far my favorite now. The time invested in developing the characters was so worth it to me. The shot of Godzilla swimming under the boat was my favorite scene. I also loved how the spikes look when he powers up. The color is so beautiful. Thanks for the reaction 😊

If you're reading this, you're not "old". Mom has an adult son and aged hair and is still too young to have gotten into the original Godzilla. As I get older my perception of old/young has been altered. If you're coherent, you're here and free to participate in any existing culture/movement, etc. My grandfather is in his mid 90,s and is aware of Taylor Swift and Drake. This was a random comment yet may connect with someone.
The 1998 Godzilla was also part of my childhood. Now, after watching other movies like Shin Godzilla or Godzilla Minus One, I can see why a lot of people hate the 1998 Godzilla movie. The design alone of 98 Godzilla was such a radical change from previous Godzillas that it gave a shock to a lot of fans. Personally, 98 Godzilla looks more like an overgrown radioactive iguana. As a Godzilla movie it falls flat on its face, but it would have worked as a kaiju movie much better.

The ''Minus One'' is a reference to Japan's situation after the war, Japan was down to nothing. Zero. When Godzilla strikes, it pushes Japan even lower, to ''Minus One''.
May I suggest "Your Name"..Japanese anime...One of the main characters is voiced by Ryunosuke Kamiki who plays Koichi Shikishima here...Also "Weathering With You"....The two main characters in "Your Name" make cameo's...And finally...."A Silent Voice"...Kind of a tough watch as the subject matter is not pleasent......But again..like "Your Name" and "Weathering With You"..They are all wonderful anime movies..of emotional rollercoasters..I am very much a sub guy rather than dub...as I feel the the dub's lose the emotion of the Japanese language...And after all ..they are Japanese movies...Thanks.
@@elizabethparker4511 It's not to say subs are perfect....But..I feel they convey the motion better than dubs...And there are far more wrong translations in dubs than subs from my personal experience...But each to their own.
1:06 Zilla 98 should've been named Iguanodon (director designed Zilla after his pet iguana 🦎🦎). Thought it was a horrible Godzilla movie but a decent monster movie.
'The special effects in this one were outstanding.' Of course you mean the 'visual effects'. Often interchanged incorrectly, there is a difference between visual and special effects. A special effect is an effect achieved in camera - an example of which would be the front projection work in Superman (1978). A visual effect is one achieved in post - e.g. the blue screen work in Star Wars (1977).
To answer your question: Yes, Godzilla had amazing healing abilities in some of the previous Japanese movies. In *Godzilla 2000* movie, Godzilla can heal so fast that he's practically just below Wolverine. The scientists in that movie named the ability "Regenerator G1".
You guys should do the kdrama ( herb ) good family value movie. And ( hello ghost) both good family value movies. I think the Taiwan version of hello ghost is still on Netflix
Even kamikaze pilots who weren’t deployed by the end of the war still faced negative stigma for not sacrificing themselves for their country, especially because of those who had abandoned their posts, like Koichi Shikishima.
I’ve been a Godzilla fan since I was 6 years old in 1973. I have watched most of the Godzilla movies multiple times. With this one, I turned it off after 45 minutes. In my opinion, (in the 45 minutes I watched) it is the worst Godzilla movie (other the stupid Matthew Broderick one) Yes the visual effects were fantastic and worthy of an Oscar nomination, but the slow pacing in the 45 minutes I watched bored the crap out of me. Plus the magical healing properties when a mine blew his face off and it healed in 10 seconds was the last straw to get me to turn it off. Toho can do what they want with their creation, but Godzilla never had that ability before and it just turned me off.
Godzilla had similar ability in the Millenium era especially in the Godzilla 2000 movie. The scientists called it Regenerator G-1. Godzilla was able to regenerate in that movie but they didn't show too much of it coz Godzilla never really got a chunk of his body being blasted but he has healing powers almost as fast as Wolverine. Btw, if you got turned off every time they introduced new Godzilla powers, I don't know how you can go through the Showa, Heisei & Millenium era of Godzilla movies. By your standard, you must really hate most of them. Even in Showa era, Godzilla talked, danced, flew and even had magnetic powers. Minus One is far from the worse offender, let alone the worst movie.
Wow. And you call yourself a fan. Apparently, a VERY casual fan. Godzilla has always had the ability to rapidly heal. How do you think he's able to take constant, sustained artillery & missle attacks yet just shrugs them off?? This ability was "officially" explained in G2000. You sound more like a Monsterverse fan, who's only watched a handful of the original films... or only caught clips of them on the internet. 🙄👎 Stick to those lightweight fluff films then. There are plenty of those ...and several from the OG movie series that are just mindless slugfests.

The 50's had many U.S. flicks about monsters created by nuclear testing in the desert. The one I remember best is, "Them!", about giant ants that nest in the underground drainage system of Los Angeles. James Cameron's, "ALIENS" is, essentially, a remake of, "Them!".
Interesting!! 😊
Godzilla wasn't really a metaphor for the A bomb attacks. He was a metaphor for the H Bomb testing in the 50s.
Awesome reaction guy’s ❤
I love the older Godzilla movies so much but this movie is by far my favorite now. The time invested in developing the characters was so worth it to me. The shot of Godzilla swimming under the boat was my favorite scene. I also loved how the spikes look when he powers up. The color is so beautiful.
Thanks for the reaction 😊
❤
I‘m glad you found immediately the paper pkg which was handed over the ship was a pile of pictures of the dead soldiers, which young RUclipsr these days can‘t do.
I‘ve been feeling a generation gap😂
Btw,Shinden, the last battle airplane, is displayed at Air and Space museum at Merryland.
We don‘'t have it in Japan anymore in Japan. I wamted to see it.
This movie is so special that I really don’t remember being this amazed by a movie.
Maybe 2005’s Pride And Prejudice. Maybe.
So, yeah... the black spot on Noriko's neck has significance. But I'd say not to spoil what comes after, as this goes deep into Gojira lore.
thank you for your salute
from JAPAN
If memory serves, Godzilla has only died twice in 38 films. James Bond only has 27 films (still amazing).
He died in Gojira, Godzilla vs Destoroyah, Godzilla 98, GMK, and Minus 1
The 1998 Godzilla was also part of my childhood. Now, after watching other movies like Shin Godzilla or Godzilla Minus One, I can see why a lot of people hate the 1998 Godzilla movie.
The design alone of 98 Godzilla was such a radical change from previous Godzillas that it gave a shock to a lot of fans. Personally, 98 Godzilla looks more like an overgrown radioactive iguana. As a Godzilla movie it falls flat on its face, but it would have worked as a kaiju movie much better.
Gojira!!! Hey guys, I'm back from my travels and will have to binge watch to catch up with everything!!! 😃
Thanks a bunch!!
Is your sanity intact after visiting the Conjuring house?
❤ Glad you are back safe and sound! 😊
@@Flix2Us Yes! Awesome activity, however, the feeling of the house was not an evil one, but rather welcoming. I feel like the ghosts there actually liked us. 👻👻👻
@@Jen-Mom Thank you!!!❤❤❤
The ''Minus One'' is a reference to Japan's situation after the war, Japan was down to nothing. Zero. When Godzilla strikes, it pushes Japan even lower, to ''Minus One''.
So you all are the two who like the 1998 sexy legs Godzilla. Nice to meet you all. After this movie, the Monsterverse is obsolete.
That's us! 😉😊
The subs are way better, yes. Then all we have to worry about is mistranslation, which I keep reading did happen at a point or two in Train to Busan.
Thank you. Really. Thank you.
❤
Y’all are awesome.❤

Hi Guys to you too!!
❤
Kamikaze pilots actually attended a funeral ceremony for themselves before taking off.
😢
When Noriko got blasted, a piece or pieces of Godzilla entered her body thus regenerating her.
You guys should do the kdrama ( herb ) good family value movie.
And ( hello ghost) both good family value movies. I think the Taiwan version of hello ghost is still on Netflix
Agree, people are too harsh on Godzilla 1998
I still enjoy it
Even kamikaze pilots who weren’t deployed by the end of the war still faced negative stigma for not sacrificing themselves for their country, especially because of those who had abandoned their posts, like Koichi Shikishima.
That is amazingly sad.
So sad! 😢
Please, please, please react to to Donnie Brasco.
I recommend Shin Godzilla
I still haven't seen it, but I've seen a lot of recommendations.
Should check out the first episode of The Penguin
Why suddenly Sinzo wo sasageyo😂
Stick to those lightweight fluff films then. There are plenty of those ...and several from the OG movie series that are just mindless slugfests.
Turn off because Pacing is makes sense but turns off by seeing Godzilla has New Ability is New Reason for me.
Fantastic reaction as usual love ❤you guys love your mom she’s beyond awesome WOULDNT be the same without her one of my favourite reaction channels look forward to your reactions brilliant it’s such a brilliant movie love from the U.K ❤❤❤
