- This video describes the process to disassemble the Magnavox D8443 in order to replace the commonly missing/broken cassette drive gear with a re-manufactured replacement gear.
The replacement gear can be purchased at www.shapeways....
This was kind of an impromptu assembly of several sections of video. Quality took a back seat to tutoring. It was important for me to make sure the appropriate steps were covered.
This was a great instruction recording. I have a Magnavox D8060 which is very similar to your model. Two of the gears had broken teeth and so the cassette player did not work. I purchased the gears and followed your repair instructions and am very happy to say that I now have a working cassette player! Thank you greatly!!!
Thank you for your feedback. It's good to hear that another vintage system has been able to be resurrected and that the instructions were as helpful as I hoped them to be.
Hey Man, thanks a lot, great video, followed step by step and replace gearing they were orange and totally shot, works perfect now! Easy to get lost taking apart and putting back together. Good detail and thanks for not skipping steps.
Thank you for your feedback. I have been accused of having excessively long videos, but I do that to make sure nothing is overlooked.
Hi, Justin!
Basically, without this gear in place (or broken into pieces as it tends to do over time) the left tape deck spindle fails to turn when PLAY is pressed. You'll probably still hear the motor running, though. Pressing rewind should still make the other spindle work, as it's driven by another gear.
It's also possible that the main drive belt is bad. You'll still hear the motor running, but you'll get no tape activity. Unfortunately, the only way to know for sure is by opening it up.
For some reason, I have not been receiving notifications of people's comments. There is no intention of ignoring anyone and I apologize if it appears that way.
Yes, life is busy for me, but I do appreciate all of the responses and questions and want to respond to them as soon as possible.
VintageVolts hi.can u help me please. mine is not even starting at any way when i press Play. power Signal Light does not Turn on. what is defect in this case? many greetings
I just ordered .. I had not seen the link in the description .. thank you.
I like the kids bracelet as the drive belt! Smart thinking!
+Anthony Linonis Thanks! As they say, necessity is the mother of invention.
im looking at 2:13 under the underneath the big green board i have a black little squar with little silver sockets.how do i put them wires in order.i got the silver maganavox color one.not the black d8443 maganavox.
i appreciate you making this video.. made changing the gear alot easier.. thumbs up to you my friend..
Thanks for commenting. Most of my "how-to" videos are in response to how videos from other people help me out when I need detailed information on working a difficult task. Kind of my way of returning the favor, so to speak.
My D8443 version has a very different cassette mechanism gear arrangement. One of the gears is too big. Very confusing. Could not find a utube video like mine.D8443 Power Player.Made in Singapore.
my maganavox d8443 blows fuses do you know where the problom is coming from can i have some one repair it. can it be be repair anay more. i would like it to be working again thay sound nice.
Hi Vintage, thanks for posting this video (great job) can you point me in the right direction to a place were i could buy the rubber belt (band) ? mine has snapped and needs replacing, hope you can help
I am actually using a Silly Bandz that my kids had lying around. Works great because they already have a square cross section. I just picked one that looked as round as possible and has a bit of tension when installed.
Hello VintageVolts will this gear fit to Philips RT75/RT1 cassette player, it looks the same but i think original gear has couple of teeths less on bigger part of that gear and 2 gears more on smaller part of gear
very nice souinding boombox
20:44 that thing's really going good
I think there's a mechanical switch that sometimes gets flaky or breaks. It's a switch which controls the motor operation. I don't recall what type of issues occur or how to fix it.
You might want to try looking on The Boomboxery website forums and search for a similar problem.
Hi. I have a Philips D8304. Both pins seem to turn, yet cassette deck 1 plays slow and cassette deck 2 doesn't turn the tape and therefore chews it up since it doesn't take up the slack. Both decks rewind and fast forward ok. Do you have any suggestions to the issues and remedies?
Thanks for this - really helped me out!
Thank you. I'm glad it's still a useful video after all these years.
It's only the one part, the gear being replaced in the video, which I have a source for. That is because I get them specially made. I offer the gear for sale on eBay.
I'm unable to post direct links here, so just search eBay for "Magnavox D8443 Replacement Cassette Gear" and you should be able to find the auction.
So it's my rewind gear that lost some teeth (it's orange and almost squishy) -- any chance you might do a replacement for that one, or know where I might find one?
I need help with my Magnavox D8443 the colored wires came out under neath the big green board I need the color to go into the right socket becuse it does not power on I would love to have it working again.so if you can help me I would appreciate it.
Little hope of a response, but I forgot to take note of the orientation of the gear that goes on above the replaced gear....any suggestions on figuring out how it goes?
The cam gear must be oriented so that the smaller plastic piece that the thin wire eventually drops into can work its way around a cam slot on the underside of that gear. It should be noticeable what slot track underneath the gear will be engaged by the small pin sticking up from that piece.
@@VintageVolts Thanks!
Hello great fix, just got one on eBay haven't got a chance to open it up it will probably need gears, are u still selling them. Thanks
i was gone buy the same one for 80 dollar seen all tath work i dont know if i buyet thank for the video
I need one of these gears for mine as well. Couldnt find the link on your site
great explanation. I just got one of these. I am a novice at radios. All of them seem to have an issue where, when you turn the volume knob the left speaker goes in and out. The louder you turn up the volume the better the left speaker works. For me it is the left speaker. How do I fix this problem? Oh, my tape player worked well when I got the unit.
My radio has a similar problem. It seems the contact wiper arm in the volume control can break away from the plastic it's mounted to. That would cause intermittent sound or single channel cutout. I have attempted to rebuild my volume control (not an easy task), but the fix didn't last. I also have not found a matching replacement for the control yet.
I havr the same box and all the mecanisms work great but when i press play, the tape deck doesnt spin... I checked the motor and its working with an external source of power... Have any idea what might me the poblem?
i have a tabletop Magnavox system that has a dead channel, can you tell me if a chip may be suspect?
Is This tep recorder parts are available , play gear, reverse forward gear & pinch roll,
I am not aware of sources for any of the other parts. I had a specific need to replace the one gear, which was a very common fault. If other components in my own devices break, I'll most likely try to produce replacements at that time.
Hey, i read through all the other comments to get info but i didnt see where you replied to where to go get the fforward and rev gear gears at?
Did I miss it or did you not address the belt for the Tape Counter?
I didn't address the tape counter in this video.
Hey, I just installed the new gear. I put everything back together carefully but I still can’t get any movement inside. When I do turn the radio on and then off the tape motor spins briefly tho. I’m at a loss. Any guidance on what the issue could be?
When the PLAY button is pressed, do you hear the motor running consistently? That should be running all the time when any of the tape motion buttons are pressed. If not, there should be a micro switch inside the tape mechanism that activates when one of those buttons is pressed.
When the play button is pushed the motor doesn’t turn at all. Where is this micro switch? Could it have something to do with the thin metal wire that clips into place in 3 places on top of the gears? I was a little unsure of the hole it went into when putting it back together. Thanks so much!!
That thin wire affects the auto stop feature. As for the micro switch, I believe there are two that can be checked. One is under our near the record button. The other is the button that goes through the top that switches the radio off and on. Make sure they are not dirty or binding.
Please help! The teeth are GONE and need those other 2 gears for ff and rewind to work properly!! Where can I get them???
eeps one Same issue
+eeps one You ordered one off of eBay from me already, correct?
I got one of your gears a few years ago but I need the ones for ff and rw. Do you have them now?
@vintagevolts - do you think this is the same gear used in an AQ 5090? It looks similar. My left spindle won’t spin because one of the cheese gear teeth have fallen off. What do you think? Thanks!
Magnavox D8443 replace the idler gear. Tape plays but does NOT shut off at the end ?
I believe I already gave you advice on resolving that issue on a different forum, but I'll repeat it here for posterity.
Make sure the thin wire that goes down through one of the pieces goes through the slot on the part that's under that piece. Without the wire passing through both, auto-stop may not work.
Wow, that is a lot of work.
It may be. The effort is worth it for collectors of these things. It's just unfortunate that the gear is buried so deep.
Do you have any other parts for these? Like a battery cover?
+Anthony Linonis Sorry, I do not. I created this gear due to mine being broken, so it was a necessity. After learning others had the same problem with their gear, I invested in having them manufactured in quantity. Battery covers are possible, but to have them manufactured would make them rather expensive due to their size, nor would they look like the original. It would not match the existing color and details.
Hello, I have a Philips player with the same deck but I can't find the gear that was broken ... or what to get them? Thank you.
good video, where do u order your parts from im tring to fix my pops radio and its the same brand
Thank you for this video, it helped a lot
I'm glad to hear that it helped. I always wonder if I give enough detail in my "how-to" videos.
i got a Maganavox D8443 and inside the Tranceformer wires came out its a red and black wire came out where do i plug in the red and black wire in to there a serten way to plug it in. and also its a 2 amp fuse i used a 6 amp in side and blwe the fuse .if i used the wrong fuse will it blow.
Does the part of the video around the 2:00 mark describe the area you are referring to and/or help you get a better reference for the wire positions? I can't quite visualize what it is you need fixed.
I ordered and fixed the wheel, but the rewind and fforward is not working any advice?
There is a second gear that goes bad. It's been a while since I looked at the mechanism, so I'm trying to go from memory. The second gear is located near the tape counter, and I believe that is responsible for FF/REW activity. I do not have replacement gears for that.
@@VintageVolts I have the same unit D8443 it plays but no rewind or fw. Before I open the unit up. This model by the looks of it only has one belt and the rest is plastic gears is that correct. So either my unit is dirty or possible a bad gear that operates the rw and fw. Thank you for the reply hopefully
Thanks for sharing this, how did you make a new gear? It sounds mine is the same mechanics and the same part is broken, almost melted...mine is 2,5 cm in diameter with the little gear on top, unfortunately this parts are not longer available :-(((
Looking for this part and your ebay listing seems out of stock. I would be interested in buying the part or getting my hands on the 3D file so I can print my own. Thank you for the work you did on this.
I have then made on demand now at shapeways.com
Just search for D8443 on that site and you'll find it.
I purchased a new gear from you last week. So far so good but I'm having trouble finding a replacement belt for my box as I can not get the gears to turn without it. Do you have any info on where to find to find one for the Magnavox d8443 or maybe the size of the belt?
I apologize for not seeing this earlier. It appears that I'm not getting notification of comments.
I don't know the actual belt size. I know the belt has a square cross section to it, but I'm unsure of the length. I'm using a "Silly Bandz" for mine. It has been working so far without problems. They have square cross sections, too. I just picked one that didn't have too many sharp bends in it's shape and also didn't need to be stretched too far when put on.
VintageVolts silly band worked for me !
Hi! Do you still sell the gear. Did not see the part on the bay. Thanx!
these internals look exactly like my d8330, will this work for my boombox too?
+Jamie Nieves I'm not familiar with the d8330 internals, but I do know that Magnavox used the same cassette mechanism in several products. If the internals look exactly the same, then it might be compatible. If it helps, the diameter of the gear is approximately 2.36 cm. and the total height is 0.61 cm. There may be slight difference in tolerance.
I noticed the Tape counter wasnt working , did you get a fix for that,,
Great video resolved my issue with my Magnavox a guy was fixing for me.
The tape counter on mine just needed a new rubber belt.
I'm glad to hear that the video helped get another D8443 working. 🙂
i would like it to work again inside some how the wires fell out.if i put the wires back in order and that don't work.it must have a problom and probly need repair.
+Catherine DeRoos Pictures would be helpful. I can compare your wire layout to mine and hopefully be able to get yours back on track.
Hi All, Do you have the 3d project for the cassette gear? Or do you know where i could buy that part? I need to fix my stereo... Thanks!!!
Filippo Giorgi Whenever I have them in stock, you will always be able to buy them on eBay. Just search for "D8443 gear." At this moment, there are 4 left in stock.
Cool, I've send you a message on ebay, please read it! Thanks!
I don't know why eBay is blocking international payments. I've tried numerous times to pass a message through. And when I try to respond with information on other ways to get payments to me, they block those, too, by accusing me of selling items outside of eBay.
Go back to your purchase on eBay and send a message from there containing ONLY the email you use to make PayPal transactions. I will calculate shipping and generate an invoice through PayPal using that address in the request.
Thanks!
Done! Check it!
Ehi, I've send you an email, please checkit! Thanks!
hey do you still got the gear... i need a few... please help me
Please help!! What if the other gears broke????
+The one and only Sista E The current replacement depicted in the video is self engineered to fix the specific (and common for the model) issue I had. There is one other gear that tends to go bad. However, that gear on mine is working and trying to replace it without it being broken already can damage other components, resulting in a bigger problem.
Personally, I will be addressing that issue of the other gears when they fail on mine. When I do, I'll be documenting it in the same way for others to use as a reference.
Hi! Do you do repairs for customers?
I typically don't do so, but I can always consider arranging an individual repair request.
Good job
Great vid ! Where can I find the gear ?
I sell them on eBay. I can't post links here and eBay changes the auction number whenever I sell out of a batch of them, but you should be able to use the search term: "Magnavox D8443 Replacement Cassette Gear"
Sir repair the national panasonic rx 5230. Please full repair.
AWESOME TECH VIDEO. I HAVE 2 D8443'S.. (ONE WAS MY DAUGHTER'S BUT LOST INTEREST). .BOTH WILL NOT RECORD & ONLY PLAY CASSETTES BOTH UNITS GIVEN TLC & IN MINT CONDTION....WOULD APPRECIATE YOUR INPUT. DO YOU SUPPLY RUBBERS AS WELL FOR DRIVE WHEEL???
APPPPRECIATE YOUR HELP:)
Failure to record is supposedly a symptom of the switch mechanism within the cassette assembly. I have not experienced this issue myself, but I believe the switch assembly can be found near the record button itself. If not, you might find be able to see what is or is not working by looking underneath the record button and tracing the mechanical movements.
As for the rubber components, I'm afraid I don't have any other replacement parts for this radio. This video represents a fix for an issue I was tired of dealing with. I made the video and sourced the custom replacement part to fix this one rather common problem.
Also mine cuts off randomly
Are you still selling the gears?
Justin can you repair my tape deck if i send radio to you? Id pay you. Lmk
Tape counter does not work
I failed to explain my problem a little bit haha.. The thing is.. the motor doesnt run when i press play... I tried to connect it to an other source of power to check if that was the problem but when i did, the motor was working.. So there must be a connection that doesnt work anymore .. and for this.. I have no solution :p
super Thanks!
The best
Never mind I found it
