I've been a Maine Guide for more than 40 years and despite promises to the contrary this method of lifting a canoe has great potential to injure both your back and your shoulders. Safest method is to flip the canoe over, lift one end and gradually walk your way towards the mid canoe balance point until you reach the portage yoke. Now lower the canoe down on to your shoulders and off you go. To put the canoe back down just reverse the above steps.
Im so nervous im 21 and ive been looking for a kayak and my friend got me a canoe and i dont know what im gonna do. This video is very very helpful i will practice this in my yard a bunch! You are incredible.
I know this is standard procedure but the concept is flawed. It is the twisting motion coming up onto the yoke that is a chiropractor’s dream to increase his bank account. As some of your commenters have said, turn the canoe upside down on the ground, then pick up an end and walk your way up to the yoke. No back destroying twisting. I know there are rare occasions where a rocky shore makes this method difficult, but the standard method as shown has several times injured me.
OK way of doing it, but most of the time I need to pick up a canoe there is water in it, so the pick up by the rear seat method works to drain the water and get the canoe easily on my shoulders.
Thank you for posting this, how heavy is your boat? Looks fairly lightweight. I have a 16 foot boat that weighs 36kg (about 80lb I think), and I am 50 years old and struggle to lift it!
Walk under it from front and place it on your shoulders. When done carrying, let one end down, and walk out from under it. Using leverage, no lifting required.
I'm commenting from several back surgeries. That looked painful and no other way to put it. I'm leaning towards a dolly setup. Not as good looking but hopefully I'll have a back left to enjoy the water.
Anytime you carry a canoe, hope no one is watching. I swear there is no graceful way to do it. Although someone with a video camera will prove me wrong. Lift weights, that is all.
Just before "roll it up" (0:58), balance the end of the canoe on the ground. Less "heave-ho" energy required for the final lift (...says this 70 + year-old canoeist with bad back and knees!)

here's a simpler way without all that shifting of the hands. your left hand is on the far side of the yoke and your right hand is on the near side and you rock with your legs and arms a couple of times and then go for it. your hands never leave the yoke until the canoe is on your shoulders. I've done this with an 18' grumman.
I did it (exact same technique) for years with a fiberglass Old Town from the 1970s. I just got a 42 lb Wenonah Min. 2. What a joy it is to get on and off the truck and carry even though it is 3 1/2 ft. Longer. Definitely the best way to save your back!
seriously. I have a 14'6 Old Town Saranac that's 80lb. How the F do I get it on the vehicle rack solo? I'm 6'2 222lb and once I get it above my head I can't keep it stable enough to get near my car without the fear of damage.
I have a 17"2 tripper, same weight, im 6ft/195. I have no problems loading or unloading solo on my suv. There was definitely a learning curve, but if you do it enough you will find what works for you. While its on my shoulders, I put it semi-perpendicular onto my roof rack, then from the rear I push forward and angle adjust accordingly. To take off, I push from the front slightly to the rear, then from the back I angle it off and to the side the off of the roof, I set the rear of the canoe onto the ground and rest the body on the roof/door, like a cross. Then I get under and just lift and portage. Not the best description, but like I said if you do it enough you will figure it out.
Brandon Wallace I use a blanket and lift one end up on the car and slide it up the rest of the way. After I get it centered I use foam blocks and place them in the appropriate spots.
I'm 16 6ft 2 and 240 pounds..i have a 1.2 mile portage that I'm doing in August and I have to carry a 14 foot 80 pound canoe. I have been practising carrying it and the back of my neck is really sore and I felt it pop back into place today..is that normal for a heavy canoe to do that to you? I've looked up videos on carrying it and I did it the correct way...any input on if Its normal?
Don't forget, us crazy boaters shorten all the words! Bowline = bowlin, Ratlines = ratlin, Gunwales = gunnels, Main Sail = mainsil... and of course, Portage = portidge.
Well, there's 'portage' as in carrying a load, and there's 'Portage' as in several place names in Manitoba, Canada. Different pronunciations from the same root.
Super helpful dude!! I'm going on a canoe date next week and this is going to help me appear as if I know wtf I'm doing!!! 🙏
how was the date
@@yz125ryder asking the real questions.

as I get older I find it easier to turn it upside down and walk in from the end
Strong work soldier!
Hey man! You just got a place to crash in High Springs Florida. We got good paddling, That video will save my back. Thank you Sir!
Woh une super explication. Amazing Guy. Enfin une bonne technique pour pas ce faire du mal. Many tk.you for your vidéo.

Planing a Okefenokke excursion just bought a used tandem 17’ Mohawk intrepid.
ive just got a canoe to restore in to a fishing canoe and this has helped alot !

Nicely done! Thanks for the pointers.

I have been doing it this way for years. a 74 pound old town .If down like the guy in video its easy, but takes practice.
@@travelingwithrick Every year I wonder if it's time to pony up for Kevlar, etc. to make it easier!
Great video. Thank you

Onemancanonlydosomuch I lift heavy still have trouble with this balance is not my strong point
Try this with a guide 147. Hernia inducing stuff.
Genius. I don't have a portage yoke, just a crossbar... can I rest it on that?
Really nice!
Thanks. Very useful.
This is very helpful! I am educated, thank you sir!
awesome video, best carrying i've seen in a while
i suggest some type of padding on the yolk
Great tip!
Thank you!

Thanks 🇨🇦👍
Cool now that I know how to carry a boat... I'll have to find a log to carry as well...
I tried this but I ended up capping myself
What canoe is that ?
This is the Old Town Appalachian - a 16 ft river runner and whitewater canoe.

Lol anyone else just thinking "Hmmm or we can find a clear spot on the water and just throw the canoe =P"
Sweet👍🏽
You make it look sooooo easy lol
Isn't that an Old Town 17ft Tripper made of ABS Royalex? Good God man, you're not hoisting a birch-bark canoe.
what if im really fat
"Por- taage" pronounced with a soft "a" reflects the word's French roots
So easy it's stupid. KISS(keep it simple stupid.) Thank you for this I just sent it to three of my friends. Wooah!
Love that boat!!! DM me if u ever want to sell it. :-)
👏👏👏👍❤️
Imagine seeing a 50+ year old petite adult trying this. LOL !!

I hate old towns, its an uncomfortable yolk and it's way heavier then swifts.
@Frederic Methot that's ridiculously heavy! Lol
