What’s interesting is that most of the pool filter sand I can get around me is not the light coloured sand you have there - it’s actually a much more brown, “natural” coloration
For dirted plants I use plastic containers, Tupperware or the shallow storage containers that slide under your bed. just not too big or it’s too heavy to move once filled. You can also drill a few holes on sides and bottom, to drain water if you need to remove the whole thing (like during medication treatments or rescaping etc etc)
I've always found The Home Depot is my go to place for pfs. Quikrete is the brand for $10 @50lbs(in my store). Anyway, it's an adequate substrate, but I would not recommend it as a soil cap or use driftwood unless you like a hugely messy tank.
@@carvedwood1953 After my plecos constantly mow over the wood, they leave the residual “sawdust,” which takes forever to siphon on pool sand, not to mention my HOB filter🙄🤭.
@@wyzemann Interesting. I don't have plecos so I don't notice that sort of thing. I am also not super into having my sand perfectly clean. More of an ecosystem type hobbyist. I was just curious as I am planning on doing a dirted tank for as cheap and easy as possible. Seems like a fun project. I'll probably use this exact sand as its cheap and easy to find.
Hi i hope this isn’t a stupid question but i really want to make a miniature fake coral reef out of neon painted polymer clay for my fish tank. I know those 2 things aren’t safe for the fish if they aren’t sealed so i was wondering if the plasti dip sealant you talked about in a previous video would work for that? Thanks so much for the great videos btw!
I just set up my 55 gallon tank using the larger top fin gravel. Now after watch Father fish he said it would be better to cap it with sand because it would stay a lot clearer. My tank has been set up for a week with 12 plants. I haven't added any fish yet. I am lost with cycling. The more videos i watch the more lost i get lol. I did the prime an stability . I took a water sample to petmart an he said my tank is ready for fish but said first put these eight aqueon pure bacteria balls my tank. Then wait a few days then add fish. Any advise would be greatly appreciated. I subscribed an love your channel.
just give it time and don't add too many fish at once don't overfeed and you'll be fine father fish methods are good I still like to add a sponge filter in 30 gallon or less tank and cannister filter or sump in any tank over 30 gallons
I'm assuming that this likely isn't really an option for marine aquariums due to it being a regular silica sand? I really appreciate the deep dive on this topic, I'm a poor reef keeper and I'm trying to do everything that I can to help myself still succeed in this hobby without letting my ADHD get the better of me (and impulsively spend money on expensive stuff when there are DIY options which could potentially work just as well.)
I tried it in a quarantine for a young goldfish and noticed it started flashing after it was sifting through it. Is this gill irritation and does it mean it's not good for goldfish? I took it out in the meantime
How long does it take for the water to become clear when you don’t rinse the sand? Do you run the filter right after the sand settles or a few days later? Thank you to anyone who could help.
I think the only real downside to pfs is it has a lot of silicates and that's why people say it should be rinsed but it doesn't make any difference. maybe a very small one if any. but however silicates are what causes algea especially in a aquarium. but if you have multiple tanks. 100% go for pfs
speaking of rinsing sand, the dirtiest nastiest sand I've ever had is the black sand from Petsmart....horrendous, by comparison Black Diamond Blasting sand is so much easier to clean, I mean I rinsed and rinsed and rinsed the Petsmart stuff and was still getting a LOT of nastiness out of it, where as Black Diamond was much easier and faster to clean. So I wouldn't say the downside is that much worse than the sand you get at the pet stores payed a lot more money for that sand too, only ever bought it once before discovering Black Diamond and will never ever buy it again. That being said I have no idea how hard it is to get pool filter sand clean I have not used it as I tend to like the dark substrate better, but I am having an idea for a tank that will use both so I might be trying it soon.
Play sand looks 100% better than pool sand. Otherwise correct haha. There are pool sands that look better than others. white sand is not as pleasing as darker sand to me. I like more natural looking sand rather than pure white.
20lb of substrate is $25 at my LFS. Walmart is a bit cheaper at $20 but they only have the old school gravel, no sand. Pool filter sand at my local Agway was $12 for 50lbs. Pool filter sand has a realistic color too.
Has anyone used paver sand? I’ve been using it for about 3 weeks and the plants are growing nicely and it looked great in the beginning but I messed that up lol … anyway hopefully I get some feedback from someone
