  • Welcome to the second video in my series comparing the Royal Enfield Interceptor 650, vs the Triumph Bonneville, vs the Moto Guzzi V7. In today's video we'll be focusing on the Royal Enfield Interceptor 650.
A couple years ago I did a first impressions video after my first time riding an Interceptor 650, today we'll look back at that video and talk about:
    • What shaped my opinion of Royal Enfield up until that point, and how it might have changed
    • What I realize I got wrong about the Interceptor 650 now that I own one
    • What I got right about the Interceptor 650 too, to try to give you guys an honest and well rounded picture of what the Interceptor 650 is all about.
Finally, we’ll cover how my opinion of the Interceptor 650 may have changed as an owner of this bike, and what’s next in my Interceptor, V7, Bonneville comparison series.
I’m Adrian from YouMotorcycle. I make videos that help motorcyclists. If you're interested in an Interceptor 650, or how it compares to a Bonneville or a V7, this video should help you.

Have a 2020 Interceptor: 20 000 kms, no pitting, discolouration or rust anywhere. Like new. Zero mechanical/electrical problems. And the frame welds r so perfect I wonder how manufacturers asking twice or 3x the $s can’t get that rite.

As others have said, You have to polish bare aluminum. The fact that an owner chooses to not maintain their bike is not a design flaw. Also, the Interceptor engine is the best looking of the Royal Enfields. All black like my Hunter screams “I’m too cheap to make it look good”. Also, is “Bon-vil” the Canadian pronunciation for Bonneville? It grates every time you say it.

    • @MotorcycleWrites
      @MotorcycleWrites 6 месяцев назад

Yeah it takes a bit of work to keep it looking good, but on the plus side you don’t need to rechrome if you scratch it up while working on the engine, it’s just a solid block of aluminum.
      (Plus it looks gorgeous)

I went to buying used RE, and they're priced same as Bonnies around here. But ones made 1-2 yrs ago shouldn't have pitting or rust on them. I haven't seen anyone claiming it's twice, but it's certainly not equal either.

Aren't the INT 650 being sent as kits to Manaus or other place and assembled locally to avoid import taxes? That's usually the case even within the lineup of a single brand. You can get accessible honda models in Brazil but others are twice the price compared to another regions.

I dont know how your 2019 RE INT 650 was treated before you bought it, but I bought a 2020 pre-owned red & black 650 RE 650 INT with just less than 3000 miles on it and the engine side covers (while not perfect) on my bike look a hell of a lot better than the ones on your bike. However, the stock mufflers on mine have less than perfect chrome but I can live with that as they are always behind me and no one has ever commented about them being less than perfect. I now have almost 9000 miles on my 650 INT and I like it a lot. Same for my 2021 RE Meteor 350 and my 2016 Triumph Street Twin. I am located in south eastern Pennsylvania and our riding season will be very limited for a good part of the next ~two months. Keep up the good work with your videos.....

June 2019 I bought the interceptor. The battery pooped in 6 months. The speedo wheel sender was replaced under warranty at 12k miles. My last real valve adjustment was at 12k. 18-24k valves in spec. 30k one valve barely needed adjustment. 36k speedo cable flex cracked because the plastic covering is too hard. 2$ at Home Depot and I spliced new soft rubber wiring in the middle saving replacement at 70$.
I call this quite trouble free. I ride nearly exclusively in southern California 's mountains grinding everything both sides to include the exhaust pipes. It handles quite well. It'll do 100 mph and ridden within 55 mph achieve 75 mpg. This is the British bike I'd never owned in the 70's because they handled and performed but they leaked vibrated and blew up.

Great vid thanks, I have been riding motorcycles for almost 50 years, I own a 2022 GT650 RE and a 2012 Bonneville SE, you are right about both of those bikes the RE handles better than the Bonneville, but the Bonneville is better for 2 up riding than the RE is so when I ride on my own its the Royal or my 73 RD350 and when the wife and I ride its the Bonneville SE. You said it about the Royal " it is what it is" and that's why I love the bike so much it was inexpensive, it is probably the most true to a Retro motorcycle along with the W800. I my self love the look of the engine as it looks like something from the 60's the big huge side cover on the right side of the bike, I love my GT650, it has 15000 km's, no pitting or anything, however to your point there maybe some inconsistencies in the manufacturing, it almost seems some are better than others, I don't know if that is possible or not but it seems that maybe the case. another thing I love about my Royal, NO Rider modes, I hate rider modes, I think they are more of a marketing gimmick than something useful. I love my bike because it is not perfect and because of the lower hp and torque output, I really have work the transmission to keep the bike doing what I want it to do and that makes my riding experience more fun, I have so much fun on the 507 and 503, loon lake, Bancroft, Dyno Road, Tory hill on that bike and because of the imperfections of the bike is what , to me , gives the bike character, its like riding something from the 60's or 70's, almost. People ask me how I like it and I always say, "it does nothing great but everything good". a little clarity, I'm 59 years old and big Horse power to me became un eventful about 12 years ago, so if someone wants big HP and torque its not the bike for them. Thanks for your review I saw it come up as I subscribe to your channel and watched it right a way, great job looking forward to more vids. If the Royal makes it through to the upgrade part or even the Bonneville look in to booster plugs to richen them up makes them run a lot smoother and nicer I have one on my Triumph and my Royal. Cheers buddy. Oh one more point and I only mention this because if someone is thinking they might want a RE 650 but have concerns about power, 401 some times has a flow of traffic of 130 to 140, No problem on my Royal Enfield 650 with 2 up my wife and I do it all the time and believe it or not I have done over 160km's with both of us on RE650 but I suspect I might have been on a slight down grade with a tail wind :-). cheers.

Great video. I have a 2022 INT650. The fit and finish is very good on mine. No rust pitting so far. I'm somewhat of a polish Fanatic, so I went after the aluminum covers with BlueMagic right away. It's long lasting and protects the surface. The engine can be considered ugly, somewhat odd, but it grows on you. The most annoying thing (just kidding) about it is that it is a spectator magnet. The Triumph is a better looking bike, but an ordinary person walking between the two will notice and be drawn to the INT. The other bike, oh yea, just another Triumph. So far my INT650 has been a pleasure to own and ride.

I have a 2023 RE INT650, purchased new and owned 1 year in Michigan where we have lots of road salt left over from our winters. Also, I live on a dirt road where a lot of calcium chloride (a salt) is put down. I simply follow Stuart Fillingham's cleaning and polishing methods. Result is I have zero pitting or rust *anywhere* on the bike. It looks showroom new. I think someone severely abused your used RE.

Thanks for that, I’ve just bought a s/h Interceptor, it looks well looked after. I’ve owned REs since 2003 mostly bought brand new. The UCE engines were a quantum leap from the old iron barrel ones as the Electras were a mighty improvement over the iron barrel ones. You could never be sure whether you bought a Monday morning bike, a Wednesday bike or a Friday afternoon bike and the metallurgy was a worry on those iron barrel bikes. The piston tops used to separate, the gearboxes had three or four neutrals and so on but the chains lasted well due to the oil mist tube from the crankcase. Wet sumping was a problem for a lot of them. They did have lots of character. You could do most repairs at the roadside which you can’t these days. I think Royal Enfields just keep getting better. No-one has problems with the alloy cases if you keep the metal polish up to them.

Thank you. This is very helpful. I'm sorting out what bike to get coming back to riding after literally 45 years. One direction I may go is boiling down to Bonneville v. Interceptor. The interceptor would be fine for me power wise etc.. I like saving the money and I actually think it is a lovely bike. But, I do worry about longevity finish wise and also resale. Leaning toward Bonneville at the moment for those reasons. But, it depends what day you talk to me which way I am leaning. I'm also considering the 350-400 cc range given my advanced age, 🙂, and long time away from riding. Maybe RE Classic 350 - maybe one of the new Triumphs (also made in India). I am more drawn to the RE in that group. What I don't want to do is to buy a Continental and then find myself spending a fortune in my time and money on power and performance upgrades to essentially turn it into what I would have with a Bonneville. That makes zero sense to me.

My valid opinion is if you dont have a hefty tool kit and a valid knowledge on greasing your hands every time you ride, don't spend any money on a old school BSA.
Even mint they leak oil, gaskets are dry, carburators need regular ajustement to the fine point and I can still go on rambling. Hoping you get one of the 3 bikes mentioned in the video and not a BSA.

Thanks for posting, a very thought provoking video. Triumph doesn't have a presence in my locale and they are relatively rare here so I haven't had the chance to ride one. I am lucky enough to have a 2021 Royal Enfield continental GT 650 and a 2023 Moto Guzzi V7 Special. I can relate to your observations. For myself, I would put it this way. The R.E. Conti. GT650 is for bashing through the back lanes when you want a bit of "Genuine riding fun". It isn't fast but it is "Endearing" as you say. The handling is light and direct and exceeds the power by some margin. The Guzzi, V7 850, is for when you want to travel to an event, in a relaxed mode and ensures you arrive in style. I know which one I would want to ride across Europe on. There is little to compare the two in my view as they are in relatively different sectors. R.E. is modestly priced and the Guzzi is a finer machine overall. I'll be keeping both by the way, for a long time!

I had a string of 865 Triumphs over the years but wanted to try something different. Bought an Interceptor after reading the glowing reviews but just could no gel with it. You're right, the engine doesn't exude much excitement and the handling didn't instil confidence when pushing on. My ownership was only a brief 3 months. Maybe I didn't give it enough time but I was making a mental list of things I wanted to change every time I took it out. The SE Bonneville is arguably a much nicer bike to ride and perhaps hits the sweet spots in power, handling, looks and comfort in a modern classic. Agree, the 17inch wheels are a revelation and transform the bike. If in future Royal Enfield ups the displacement of that engine, introduces 17inch cast alloy rims, I'd definitely revisit it. Suspension is a relatively simple fix provided the price point of the bike remains where it is, one can justify the mod.

Greetings, Adrian. John in Colorado, again! Our motorcycle tastes / interests must be quite similar. I'm old, though, so much of my early riding was on "classics." Did 200K miles on BMW twins in 70s / 80s. Stopped "cold-turkey" for work and family, then returned on a Moto Guzzi Norge -- a 2008 NOS I got in 2010. Sorry I sold it, as it was a great bike. Now, as you'll likely remember, my garage houses the two G650GSs. I wonder if you've yet had a chance to look at the Super Meteor in Canada? I finally sat on one here in The Springs. I wonder if the fit/finish issues have been improved? Even if RE is getting better as an evolution, rather than a "revolution," many have commented favorably on the new 650, and the Himalayan. Perhaps they're succumbing to "fan-boy" syndrome, but they do seem to be moving in the right direction. Best to you. J

From other videos, the original seat doesn't seem to be too comfortable over longer distances, but RE offers a touring seat option with more positive feedback (rider's weight is of course a factor). If what other reviewers say is accurate, specially with a passenger, probably the rear shocks might not make the best ride and may need an upgrade. Take this with a grain of salt, you should really test it the way you plan to ride the bike.

0My younger brother rides Cont 650 and the one thing we both agreed upon when looking for that type of bike ... There isn't anything like it within 30-40% of the price. You can get them for 6100 - 6500 bucks all day long. I think you can get the W800 for 9 grand sometimes and probably the Speed Twin for under 10k.
At least if you are going cruiser you can look at the Shadow or Boulevard and stuff like that. That retro British bike look simply costs so much from everyone else that RE finds itself is the spot of being the only player in its segment.
I think the success of those RE 650s shows that there is a desire for that type of bike without the need of superior power. I wonder if the other manufacturers have ceded that spot to them or if some cheaper options are on the way. Honda loves that 500 they put in like 100 bikes maybe them? Suzuki won't for sure. Triumph just released that 400 so maybe they will get part of that market but they don't really look the part, which I understand from them, they want you on their Bonnys. Just hoping for more "entry level" options with that retro look.

I would like to start off with........ Thank you. I have been shopping for a bike for a little while. Quick background, My first bike was a 78' Honda GL500. Right after that I traded for a 78' Goldwing. Rode it for a long time and sold it got married, kids blablabla. I'm hella old now , kids grown and ready to get back on two wheels. My local dealer Has Royal Enfield, Suzuki, Zero, QJ and a lot of used bikes. I liked the price of the RE but not comfortable in the seat. They have a 2011 Fury with 4200 miles on it I was really comfy in that seat. Those are the two bikes that have my attention. The RE is new $6500+ and the Fury is $6500+. I trust the Honda more. What are your thoughts?

Man, im buying soon a 2023 RE interceptor 650 all black, after one year testing all brands and models. Best smooth ride i ever had. This is a real M.O.T.O.R.C.Y.C.L.E. A steel frame, two wheels, a good engine, few gauges, lot of fun while riding safely and 3 years warranty whitout mileage limit. Fantastic customer service and plenty of parts and accesories at a reasonable price. Do you want me tell you something about Guzzi?. Manure has more value than Guzzi.

Thanks for the review. Personally, i don't mind the mix of alloy, black and chrome on the engine and pipes, my '79 Bonnie is the same. I'm not a huge fan of the egg shaped engine on the other side, but i actually found it less offensive than the modern triumphs take on my classic. Where my Bonnie is lean and purposeful i felt the new Bonnie was heavy, clunky and obese. I've actually got over my dislike of the egg engine thing as at least it looks like an A65. Where i think that RE failed though is those upswept pipes at the expense of pillion leg room. For such a do it all bike this seems like they were chasing the look at the expense of the function in an effort to mimic the Look of the original interceptor.

As you also pointed out not all wear is equal and that is also fair. I just don't expect a finish on a motorcycle which here in the states I can get brand new for $4999 compared well to a t100. Even a used t100(using one I found in Ohio for example) 2020 triumph with over 6000 miles $6999 a poor comparison a new one is much more. Thats like comparing a budget sedan to a Cadillac and wondering why it doesn't have as good carbon fiber. And you did not answer my question is a bit of elbow grease going to hurt you? I have a RE 350 Twin Spark which is lighter and less complicated having a carby. It’s had some head work done but it is not suitable for high speed motorways except for very short bursts. My RE Intercepter is way too heavy for what it is. Enough power, poor riding position re foot pegs and bars. My recommendation for old blokes say 75 plus years, provided you don’t think you’re a twenty year old, would be a RE 350 Meteor. Comfortable seating position, easy handling, good brakes, and light enough to push into the garage. Fast young blokes need fast bikes.
