Here in the US S&S is already making proper mods for the 650. Exhaust, performance clutches, cams, high compression pistons etc. Really surprised me as they’re more of a Harley/Indian performance company. Very cool stuff and has me even more interested in one of these haha
Wow - I did not expect the bike to sound like that with new pipes! Sounds so mean - esp without the baffles! Thoes pipes and a few basic mods and you have got yourself a wicked retro bike. Excellent!
That baby sounds mean. I like it! Personally , I would have left the front splash guard attached especially in the U.K.. The rear mods look fantastic. Really like that bike.
funnily enough, when they were first shown i thought "oh god, it's got stupid small mudguards" and was quite pleased when they put these extensions on. It only goes to show that cusomers vary.......
Interesting mods, all around! Especially liking the black tape trim around the fuel tank. One thing I like about this model, tho, is the proper front fender. Like Triumph in the days of yore gave you a proper front fender that came down low and covered the wheel from 9 o'clock to 1 o'clock of the wheel. Bikes without this full fender, might as well not have a front fender at all--- all that water and dirt sprays directly onto the frame and engine LOL!
Nice work mate. love the new cans, baffles out definitely! Personally practicality and protection would have me leave the front guard on - thats just me :)
Lucky you avoided the Oh Bugger moment of running the Dremel through the stop-light wires! And you do have enough engineering knowledge to know what a pilot hole is!
Beautiful. The Interceptor sounds really nice but as you mentioned, a bash plate will be a must have addition especially now that you've shortened the front mudguard. I watched Stuart Fillinghams video where he fitted a bash plate. He mentions that the oil filter being at the very front is vulnerable to debris puncturing the filter.
I've got the 2-1 tracker system on my Bonnie and with the baffle out has accounted for the frightening of several children and unproven heart attacks of at least two pensioners 👍
Superb looking, and sounding bike. I had to smile at the mudguard delete, as I always add fender extenders, and huggers to my bikes, for riding in England's green, but often damp countryside.
Interesting that you are removing parts of the mudguards. Living in not so sunny Wales, I'd take the opposite approach and try to source ones similar to those fitted to the 500 cc Classic. The more winter road crap they keep off me and the bike the better. Noisy exhausts are great for short runs, but when touring they are a pain. I can't see why you removed the fork leg reflectors? Anything that helps visibility on these dark winter nights is worth having.
Geoff Halsey I guess that the difference between people who ride a bike for transportation and those who ride for pleasure. I was the same when I lived in Britain. Nice job TMF. Found it amusing, though, that changing the exhaust cans was a far easier task than removing a bit of sticky tape. When I took the reflectors off my old KTM Duke, I used some dental floss behind them to 'slice' them off with much of the adhesive. Then a quick wipe with white spirit.
Don't forget the rear light has no reflector, and so when you remove the splash guard below the number plate you ought to use a rear light with a built in reflector lol, good man !

AEW exhaust for the interceptor is awesome, a blend of bass and loudness is perfect to keep ur ears from irritation of too loud pipes and the awfully quiet nature of the stock pipes
Nice bike, reminds of the good old times when things were less complicated... I'd buy it over a Triumph any day and save some serious $$ for things like slip-ons. Owned three XS 650 in the early 90s, I like these old parallel twins, the upright cylinders and those headers. In case the the exhaust is too loud without baffles you could experiment and drill holes into the baffles.
Those side reflectors on the forks are actually a great idea. I’m restoring a USA built/spec Honda VF750F Interceptor (the quick V4 one) that still has its original reflectors. I’m leaving them. They improve visibility. Otherwise, nice noise. Now all you need is some performance upgrades to give it the Ooomph a 650 ought to have. I’d start with a pair of flat Kehins, increased compression pistons, gas flowed head, and hotter cam. That might give you 60HP.
David Raye You’re missing the point. Firstly, if minor performance upgrades could “ruin its reliability”, then the thing is far too fragile. But everyone who’s reviewed this bike has recognised the obvious fact that RE released this bike as a basic bike which is perfect for upgrading. And if it’s only capable of being made more aesthetically and aesthetically useable, then a lot of serious bikers will not be playing. There’s a limit to the appeal of any bike that satisfies borderline geriatrics by evoking a bygone era, but without delivering even the power potential that it should - on paper, never mind what we all know is possible.

Even though "it never rains in southern California" I'm keeping my long fenders and I wish they were longer so the engine wouldn't get crap around the oil filter. Even though here in the mountains I can see Mexico it just snowed over 22 inches a couple weeks ago.
I removed the rear plastic too and stuck a small round reflector on the number plate off ebay. Left the front one on as keeps the engine cleaner. TIP-- Use your spare black number plate bolts to fill in the holes on the rear guard, looks better than the metal screws. As for the small brackets left on the silencers, leave them alone and live with them, not heard good things about exhaust wrap..!

With the exception of the removal of the fender extensions (where I would go the other way and install them, if they were not there), some of the mods can make you walk home at a Police control here in Germany! The back reflector misssing 40€. Front side reflector missing, they sometimes overlook, otherwise 40€ as well. Ah, a few little tweaks! I absolutely love everything about my bike as is! Agreed UK back plates are huge. In Australia the motorbike plate is less than half the size! Love ur work…
I would: Shorten the turn signal stalks if possible to tuck them in. The mufflers look and sound much better but imo would look better if they didn't extend past the rear tire. Remove the passenger grab rail if passengers will not be riding with you. You could take a 1/4" more material all the way around your plate and get by with it and look a little sharper yet. Acetone or mineral spirits work well on adhesives. Try an inconspicuous spot first though. Nice looking bike to begin with and you made it look much better! These bikes will catch on once people start to ride them and understand the cost vs fun factor.
I've removed the plastic on the rear mudguard myself. Stuck with the standard plate though, and just mounted the original reflector on the bottom of the plate. Considered doing the front one too, but I'm worried about bits flying up from the road onto the sump and oil cooler. Decided to get myself a sump and oil cooler guard first.
Is it legal, (& ok for insurance without checking), to stick stuff on a numberplate? I don’t think so, but check out with DVLA etc, numberplate requirements.
That gooey stuff on the fork is easily removed with a product called GooGone which we have in Canada. The other thing that often works on that type of cleaning task is WD40. It has a pretty strong ability to dissolve adhesives without ruining paint.
Loverly. Much better. Wonder if the new cans change the fuelling? Could you use the WD40 to remove goo, just avoid the brake disk and tyre :-). Spray silicone to remove oil residue from chains on the back wheel - works like magic. Again do not get any on your brakes or tyres! What a rich sound.
I've been riding since 1970 and averaged a new bike almost every year. Usually make very few modifications except for the seats. Hardly ever engine mods. I learned if you needed more HP , buy a bike that met that need. Over the years I spent more money on seats than my 22 RE INTERCEPTOR cost. I did just receive a Black Faux Touring seat from India. Outside of the crude looking seat pan that didn't fit worth a crap. I had to make some rubber cushions so it wasn't metal sitting on the frame. Great review and mods. I got my A2 license last summer and got a Vitpilen 401...love it but sometimes feel a bit big on it and keep toying with getting an Interceptor or Continental GT, these mods make more tempted to take the plunge.
TheMissendenFlyer Weather didn’t allow to take one out yesterday but had a seat and look. Love the blue/white Continental, position more comfortable than Vitpilen...now just to sell mine and get one!!!
There is no minimum size requirement for a number plate in the UK. The size requirement is for the letters & the spacing between them. If you have a plate with a 1 in it like you do, you can usually go a size down & still be legal provided you keep the letters to the minimum size. There is a link on the Gov.uk website that tells you what's legal.
l love the mods looks fantastic and sounds even better .l guess you can always reattach the front mud guard for winter season :) l can t wait to see what you mod for the rear lights next !!
Top tip for tightening or loosening bolts etc mate ... Lefty loosy righty tighty Have to admit you’ve done a canny job there and the bikes looking a treat
Hi Just watched this vid again. Just wondered how many people watch your vids more than once!!!!! Anyway quick question, what flooring have you got in your garage?
You didn’t have to reprogram the ecm after installing the new pipes? On my Bonneville reprogramming wasn’t necessary after installing the TEC 2 into 1 pipe, as long as I left the baffle in the exhaust can. The bike should be running pretty lean without the baffle(s).
This video must have been "in the can" for a while . You said "I've had the Interceptor for a couple of weeks " ! Yeah , editting takes a lot of time, so I'm only teasing. Keep up the good work :)

Nice tip!
VERY NICE WORK. After watching that I think I’m going to buy an Interceptor!
Good choice!
Want one even more now! Sounding great.
Never said this to a bloke before TMF, but nice cans!😉🤣
Definitely baffles out sounds great don’t Forget the reflectors you can get two small round ones online self-adhesive to sick on number plate ⚙️🔩🔧👍
I love the sounds of your RE😍
So do I!
I tried taking a shot every time he said "Right" and ended up in the hospital
You shouldn't have; he's saying "roight", not "right". 😂
Beautifully done
Best motorcycle ever IMO
Much appreciated for sharing bike info...
There are some really small chrome exhaust heat shields that cover those brackets really well. You can get the on ebay.
Really? You don’t have a link by chance do you???
TheMissendenFlyer Go the the U.K. ROyal Enfield Interceptor owners FB group; there is a guy making covers for about £20
I got mine from the local bike shop but i found an add on ebay that seems to be very similar. Search for "Chrome exhaust heat shield".www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Universal-Motorcycle-Exhaust-Pipe-Cover-Chrome-Heat-Shield-Heel-Guard-Decorate/333414122136?hash=item4da107c298:g:LlcAAOSwT7Nd3hE-
Great review and mods. I got my A2 license last summer and got a Vitpilen 401...love it but sometimes feel a bit big on it and keep toying with getting an Interceptor or Continental GT, these mods make more tempted to take the plunge.
Definitely worth the change in my opinion!
TheMissendenFlyer Going to go give one a ride this weekend and see what I think.
Let me know what you think?
TheMissendenFlyer Weather didn’t allow to take one out yesterday but had a seat and look. Love the blue/white Continental, position more comfortable than Vitpilen...now just to sell mine and get one!!!
carburettor cleaner is great for getting glues etc removed.
(Along with your other mods) I like the black tape covering the tank seam. And the old school Triumph logo on the T-shirt.
l love the mods looks fantastic and sounds even better .l guess you can always reattach the front mud guard for winter season :) l can t wait to see what you mod for the rear lights next !!
Big plans for this bike!
Baffles out gets my vote, sounds great.
Top tip for tightening or loosening bolts etc mate ... Lefty loosy righty tighty
Have to admit you’ve done a canny job there and the bikes looking a treat
Hi
Just watched this vid again.
Yes - details in the description as to the delay...
@@TheMissendenFlyer Ahh, I should read video descriptions. I rarely do.
Ever thought of putting a side-car on it, they're a lot of fun and surprisingly practical.
Royal Enfield says fitting a side car will void the warranty.
