Great little video. My partner actually brought me this very model last week. I suffer from siezures and have been struggling with concentration so she brought it me to try and help me focus on something. I've not tried to do a model since I was a kid over 30 years ago but I thought I'd give it a go, I just wish I'd have seen this video first as i think I'd done it backwards and built the ship first before painting it. Thankfully it's actually turned out really well and since completing it I've built a further 2 models Ind I've actually finished painting them both this evening. After seeing this I'm going to use some of the tips when I start my next project. I have thought about adding fine black cotton as the ropes for the sails unless someone can give me some other ideas. Brilliant video thanks for the tips👍
I've got some Uschi fine thread for rigging - it's like cotton but it's elastic so it looks finer and keeps a straight line - super glue can be used to glue it in too! Worth a google
Really enjoyed watching this, took me right back to my childhood with the Airfix small kits like the Victory, Santa Maria, Mayflower and my personal favourite Revenge of which this reminds me. Thank you so much for posting...
Thank you for your comment. It also took me back. Must have built those kits on their initial release all those years ago. One l never done was the HMS Shannon. Also greatly missed are the 1/12 Richard the Lionheart and Joan of Arc. 👍🏻

Thank you for a very clear review and build of this 2014 released model. There is always the ratlines and rigging and correctly placing of flags, in all, so impressed I now have 2 of these on order
Excellent build Matt of the Mary Rose. This kit looks like a must have. I think you have got a knack for Tudor era warships.........looks like you now need Airfix's Golden Hind to go along with it! In regards to the myth that the Mary Rose sank of her maiden voyage. I think the fate of the Mary Rose became mixed up with the fate of the Swedish Warship Vasa. Famously the Vasa sank on its maiden voyage in Stockholm Harbor, 1628. I always love to see when someone takes the time to debunk historical myths. Well done for doing that as well Matt!
He must have had a lot of patience, if he built the kind that you have to put individual planks on the hull sides! And then there's all of that rigging!😵
Hey Matt, 👋 i just wanted to say I love all your videos and your tips. They have helped me so much with my airfix kits and personally I love my MkII Curtis Tomahawk or my MkIa Supermarine Spitfire all your videos helped me with those and gave me a better understanding of how to make models. I am currently working on the Airfix Battle of Britain Memorial Flight (containing a MkIII Lancaster Bomber, a MkIIa spitfire and a MkIXI spitfire) that i got for Christmas thank you for all your videos and keep up the good work even through these tough times. Thxs James
I've used a commercial rigging thread and it's basically elastic sewing thread refined... still a tester of patience but once you get the techniques right, you then never look back.
Nice job Matt, and as you say a good kit for beginners. I have this and the Victory got them as stocking fillers as I am not a beginner, but still love doing these. I actually paint my parts first before assembly, think it makes a big difference especially if there is a lot of small intricate painting. Keep up the great work as we need to get younger ones back into modelling and what better way than watching one of your videos. 👍🔥🔥🔥
Nice video Matt, and you always have a useful tip - I’d never heard of thinning the horrible Humbrol Matt varnish with hot water to avoid whitening. I think the problem with sailing ship models is always the sails, and your treatment of them here works really well.
Good video and a fine build for what I call a Five Quid Flier as Ive made all the planes in this range seen in the same discount supermarkets. Good tips too - the gloss/satin varnish to go under waterslide transfers is a life changer for me, and good to see you can use hot water to get the matt varnish to work ok.
I remember building the HMS Victory years ago which is very similar to this kit, and I also remember doing a rubbish job! I might buy this kit and have another go...
@@Soltheman1 well, the Victory tooling dates from 1956 so is quite crude compared to the 2014 tooling of the Mary Rose. I have built both kits, might be worth looking up my victory build on my channel for a comparison
Great build video! I have a large wooden kit of this interesting ship but holding off from building it right now! My issue is the perceived accuracy of the forecastle! Even the historical experts are unable to agree on the correct shape of the ship as the only pictures are at best suffering form artistic licence! It is frustrating that parts of the bow of the real ship are still on the sea floor covered up for the time being. Yes the rigging is thankfully quite easy for this ship and would look nice. Little display case mandatory!!! Your little kit turned out really well, good job! :-)
looks great. if your looking for some more inexpensive sailing ship models there are a few from Lindberg that are decent. they are older kits from the 60's but still can be built up nicely thanks to the reissues from Round 2 models. I think a few might be out of print at the moment but they had such offerings like, Columbus's ships, Hudsons Half Moon,Mayflower, and Barbary Pirate Ship at a price around $10
Chrome scissors rubbed on the sails in the model I built in the 1990s it was a square rig ship and had raised rope lines of the sails I had painted them with a cream mat paint and the Chrome marks added lines to the raised line that was quite effective, and easy to do. I hope someone finds this suggestion useful.
The Tudor era navy were FASTIDIOUS about the appearance of their vessels, especially the flagship. Her sails would have been immaculate white, her paintwork and gilding gleaming. The notion that past eras were typically grubby is very much a media fabrication. Not all of the people washed themselves quite as much as we do these days, but keeping your stuff looking pristine was a significant priority. Most sailers on ships spent almost their entire work time cleaning. Aside from being, at this time, certainly considered a sign of purity, Kings liked to show off their best deathboats whenever they could, and this would mainly involve ambassadors, dignitaries, wealthy merchants etc none of whom would be all that impressed if what they saw was grubby. Ships would carry more than one set of sails for several reasons, (I dunno if 400:1 is good enough to show, but), the decks of the ships would have sheet lockers, so they were perfectly capable of bringing down one sheet, putting up a spare, and running the dirty one down to the lower decks where you'd dunk them in one of the ship's cauldrons to boil up with some pig (or sometimes whale) fat render and then bring them up to dry by stringing them from lines between the masts. If you'd like a quick indicator of how Medieval chaps kept their linens, look at EVERY contemperaneous portrait. They'll all have bright white starched fabrics. You might say 'yeah, but, for a portrait...' and there's soem truth to that but the flip side would be pointing out quite how much this sort of thing was the subject of gossip and disdain in diaries from the era, and not just the landeds either. Probably TL;DR, something of a personal area of interest. Of course, a period accurate model would also look like it'd been painted very simply, so, you can't really win on something that size.
You must have an absolutely loaded Aldi - mine never have any! Also, what do you think of the gold leaf? I bought some for my saturn V but I'm not sure yet...
Oh no! I find it works ok as long as you use only tiny amounts of wash. If you find that the paint is peeling off you can either remove the paint and start again, or cover up those areas with a couple more layers of paint. If you're still struggling, you can replace the enamel wash for a water based one (use some watercolours or pastel dust)
I’ve just completed it as a complete novice to modelling, I am not starting the Ravell HMS Victory which I am finding much more challenging. Any recommendations for other tall ship models for beginners?
9:57 "look at all those guns" And isn't it normally a good idea to use the same brand of thinner with paints, in case there's an adverse chemical reaction?
Hard to believe that almost 500 men lived on this ship, which is only about 45 metres long. 179 skeletons were found in the wreckage, but it's believed only about 35 crew survived the disaster.
The thought occurs re skill level that you can go up but not down; i.e a skill level 1 you can add bits to, like your wash, and make it a 2, 3 etc, but a skill level say 5 would look poor if made as a 1.
If the wind is in the sails, doesn’t that mean that’s the direction the wind is blowing and therefore the direction the flags should face? I mean, the flags aren’t going to face into the wind but go in the direction the wind blows
