Darci Lynn Farmer won America’s Got Talent.
Terry Fator has one of the best show on the Las Vegas Strip.
Jeff Dunham sells out arenas internationally and is one of the highest paid stand-up comedians in the world.
This is the best time to get into ventriloquism.
It is fun, people love to watch, and if you are already performing you will book more gigs by adding it to your act.
What makes it so fun?
Illusion of the Ear
Our ears are not very good at telling the exact spot a sound comes from.
Think of the last movie you went to.
The theater’s sound system uses the same speakers for actors, explosion, or sound effect.
But the sounds all seem to come from specific parts of the screen.
We use our ears to get the general direction but we use things like visual clues, the sound of a person’s voice, and the context to tell exactly who is speaking.
One audio speaker can make us hear lots of different people and one ventriloquist can do that too by making their voice different and giving us visual clues.
Illusion of the Eye
We use our ears to get the general direction of sound but we use visual clues, the sound of a persons’ voice, and the context to find the exact spot.
On screen it is easy to tell who is speaking because we see them talking and hear their specific voice.
A ventriloquist makes it easy to tell who is speaking because we see the puppet’s mouth moving when it speaks and not the ventriloquist.
The movement of the puppet and facial expressions of the ventriloquists help make it clear who is doing the speaking.
Illusion of the Mind
Ventriloquism is fun because even though we know it is just the ventriloquist talking, it is fun and funny to suspend our disbelief and enjoy the show.
What Ventriloquism is NOT
Most people know ventriloquism when they see it, but there are lots of misconceptions about it.
Not Something You Are Born With
No one is born knowing how to do ventriloquism.
It is not some genetic quirk or gift.
Every good ventriloquist you see has spent lots and lots of hours practicing.
Not a Substitution for Entertainment
Ventriloquism is a tool for entertainment.
But the technical skills are not enough.
Jeff Dunham would be a funny stand-up comedian even if he did not do ventriloquism.
Terry Fator would be great at doing musical impressions of famous singers.
Darci Lynn Farmer would be cute, charming, and a great singer.
They use ventriloquism as a tool to take their talent and make it so much more entertaining.
But the key is to be funny and entertaining FIRST.
Not Impossible
You can learn to be a ventriloquist.
If you can speak normally, you can do it.
It is a learned skill that you can do.
ANYONE willing to practice can learn it.
Not Easy
You can be a ventriloquist but it takes time.
It will take lots of practice but it is fun practice and you’ll enjoy the time.
How to Do Ventriloquism
I’m not going to pretend to tell you everything you need to know to be a ventriloquist in this short video.
But, I do want to tell you how to get started. I don’t have any ties to these resources. I am just trying to save you some time.
Lessons
Jeff Dunham has some lessons on RUclips to get you started.
Tom Crowl has a video series and it has five free lessons to get you started. You can see if it is fun and what you want to do.
I asked a lot of ventriloquists and almost all of them said Tom Crowl’s course is the place to start.

And the best place to start when you are ready for your first professional puppet is Axtell Expressions.
Steve Axtell does great work and is just a super nice person too.

So, learn the craft then go perform.
Volunteer for nursing homes, your church, Cub Scouts, anywhere you can.

Carmen, Darci Lynne Farmer just gets better as she matures as a performer. She is going to be a star not just in the ventriloquist world but in comedy in general as she grows up.
ProfessorQB you know I watch a lot of ventriloquists on RUclips, and I am performing in June every end of June we go up to creation in Pennsylvania and I saw 1 of my favorite ventriloquist Mark Thompson and friends and I was like I want to try that but he's a man and I'm a young woman who is 21 years old or I would say 20 from last year that I saw him, the reason I am telling you this now because you might think I never seen you in person doing ventriloquist I understand that but a good thing is I am going to perform on stage with my favorite ventriloquist Maran and friends and we meant after her show ends she had's her own booth table and I got puppet eyes, but I have 2 puppets Holly the mermaid and Chelsea the cheerleader and I am getting whole lot better because of ventriloquists

One of her biggest assets is in addition to technical proficiency she is just a joy to watch. Not only is she good at the craft, she also knows how to bring joy to her audiences.
ProfessorQB she rly dose and Very good and her technique like the way she snatches ur heart with her sweet voice and her technique V B and M are the hardest for me but the way she does it so smoothly it’s very entertaining and like you said with the allusions she’s really good at it and I can do that too just with lots of practice ty for replying have a good evening 😊

Patrick Tima I believe that Kermit was originally voiced by Jim Henson himself until he passed away.

They are both amazing talents.
There are a lot of gifted & talented ventriloquist & I respect all of them, but to be honest, my favorite 1 is Darci Lynne.
My absolute favourite is Paul Zerdin. He has great sense of humor and will make you laugh of joy each time you watch his performance. My second fav is darci Lynn. She's very inspiring and her singing was just outstanding.

At a young age Darci Lynne has shown what hard work practice and persistence can achieve in life.
At a young age Darci Lynne have revitalized the art of ventriloquism and brought it back into mainstream as a major artform! and has inspired countless of people of all age group to either take up the art of ventriloquism or show an interest as a spectator of the art.
She is an amazing talent! 🙂

Apparently I actually talked about Darcy Lynne for my Special Olympics reality tv shows and I talked about AGT 1 of the expert panels
I have to say all the ventriloquists are just amazing even so Darcy Lynne 1 of the professional ventriloquism and she has a gifted voice that she has
I'm so excited that Darcy won the show but the other contestants did excellent job of there talents and coming on the show as well for the first time of their life and show people what talents what they have they want to show the world

My favourite ventriloquist was most definitely Ray Allen 😁 the British ventriloquist who had Lord Charles 🧐 a Master of his craft. They are on RUclips so check them out and judge for yourselves. In second place in my opinion was Terri Rogers with Shorty Harris 😗 Female ventriloquist with Male character 🙂 think about it?? Very difficult to do the crossover from Female voice to Male voice 😆 and both these ventriloquist acts were performing in the 60s and 70s with amazing tradiitional ventriloquist dolls 🤗

@@ProfessorQB Thanks you Professor for your reply to both of my comments. as you know not all Ventriloquists can sing and a good one can make you start to believe that their more then one on stage that their dummies or puppets are real by their puppeteering skills and delivering and timing of their lines between themselves and their dummies/puppets.
That's what makes it so much fun to watch the great ones 🙂
When I brought my "Kelly" 'out of the closet' (as it were) I thought I was way ahead of the children in my neck of the woods, I didn't think they would know too much about "Dummies", BUT, apparently there are 'horror vents on TV and I get 'negative' comments, like he is 'scary' "I don't like puppets".....etc.
Mike Rogers there is some of that but I am finding in my market people are excited because of America's Got Tallent, Darci Lynne Farmer, Terry Fator, and Jeff Dunham.
Things are looking up for ventriloquist.
This is the best time to get into vent.
I've gotten those same "scary" comments since my first birthday party gig in the early 90's because of Chucky or Puppetmaster...it comes with teh job. But he's not wrong this really is a great time for vent. I've had at least triple the booking inquiries lately.

Mine is Paul Zerdin, the first ventriloquist I have ever seen. Then I found Jeff Dunham. Both are great.

Back then, I dont what ventriloquism is, until I saw Paul Zerdin on AGT. I liked and addicted to it, and I'm actually practicing it.

I don't know the name and only heard the story, which may not even be true, but I guess in the old days of performing, there was a ventriloquist who when he came to a new city to perform, he would drive up interest in his show by going to the main part of the city and carry on conversations with horses and the wares of fishmongers (dead fish) and would freak people out. If true, he's my favorite. Then Willie Tyler and Lester. I had a Lester figure when I was younger.
That reminds me of the old story. A ventriloquist was performing in a saloon in the Old West.
His figure "Jake" would insult the audience for laughs.
Jake made a joke about how stupid the gunslinger in the front row was. The gunslinger pulled out his six-shooter.
The ventriloquist started to apologize and the gunslinger said, "You stay out of this mister. This is between me and the little guy sittin' on your knee."

For those who are thinking about taking up the art of Ventriloquism I would start out using a sock on your hand at first to see if you are going to like it and not get discourage and quit, and to those of you who have the determination to put in the hours of practice have fun at learning your craft.

He is an incredible talent
Ones like Darci lynn and jeff, are introducing the younger crowd to a unique form of comedy, however ventriloquism as been around since the late 19th century, there was a performer called edger burgen and his counterpart charley McCarthy who entertained audiences before tvs were in homes and during the second world war, and continued to do so for the rest of his life..
You make a good point. We would not have the ventriloquists we have today without Bergen, Shari Lewis, Jimmy Nelson, and a host of others.
My favorite ventriloquist is all of them because all of them are very good it's just so hard to choose so my favorite is all of them
