I thought so, too. But the more I Iook at it it looks like it would be a very easy one to copy, and rather unsophisticated compared to his other works. A fantasy where he was never really there in his mind ....and Sorrento, Italy is so beautiful, as is that entire Almafi coast. ..(didn't think US $ at 9M was too much before realizing HK$ are about 1)8 of US ones).

    • @nomadscavenger

me, too. After looking a bit longer it seems it could be easily copied. As a fantasy taking us back to ancient Rome, he didn't seem to really imagine himself there, or just not so technically involved, more like for a children's book illustration? I thought $ at 9 m US was reasonable enough until I saw that the $HD was about 1/8th. I'd still like to have it, though. Sorrento, Italy is so beautiful, as is the entire Amalfi coast, no wonder he got inspired, even if those featured in it, and the idea seem unlike his usual productions, sweetness into saccharine.

1990 was Renoir's year with a $78 million USD sale of his most iconic, of his 4000 paintings, ''At the Moulin de la Galette,'' from 1876.

It really isn't one of Renoir's best efforts. The painting looks kind of cheesy.

@@karllieck9064 Thank you for pointing that out. Renoir painted it in Italy; thus the togas. Might this work have been a bridge between Impressionism and Symbolism? In the decades that followed, scenes similar to this would appear everywhere in the arts from painting to dance.

LOL when he said ‘that’s very US but we’ll take it’ after someone bid 19,250,000, that (clearly american) guy sitting down got so mad when he realised what was just said. shaking his head every so often, deep in a sulk, motioning to a fellow american across the room for solidarity hahahahaha
