Former Victorian premier calls for government to reinstate mandatory national service

  • Former Victorian premier Jeff Kennett is calling for the federal government to reinstate a new kind of national service that would have young Australians serve their community for a couple of years.
“Why do I favour it? Because I think society today is lacking any sort of unifying point,” Mr Kennett told Sky News host Chris Kenny.
“Every male and female, say the age of 20, is called up for one or two years, they have a choice of going into any of the military arms … but they also have the opportunity of joining a first responder group.”

Better now than later, if they are not involved with socialising and sport and they don't study or know true history or how to work for their money - how are they going to become taxpayers and pay off this governments debts and support our pensioners!? Make them useful for us and themselves, and the future of Australia! I asked a boy the other day, did you watch the Coronation, he said "the horses were wild" - he's 14 and that's all he remembered!? 🤤

I'm glad he remebered the horses. Our grandmothers would swoon and grovel over the royal family. It was f*king embarrassing, I'm glad we're leaving it behind.
BTW, the military pays F*all, but if that kid got a degree, they'd pay a shitload more tax- pay off their debt much faster and contribute more $$$ to pensioners.
You do know we may never fight another ground war? It could all be done with drones- tiny ones for spying or a single huge one to take out a whole ship.
Hmmmn, who do I want defending Australia if attacked? An unwilling conscript who can use a Steyer .223 as missiles soar 3k overhead towards Melbourne?
Or that kid with an advanced avionics deegree who can plot those missiles, communicate with our defenses and simutaneously map them on a grid with other surveillance stations as he toggles a switch to intercept them? Hmmmnnn...

What I believe Australia should do is get rid of the army and turn them into a marine corpes. Get the airforce transition to marine pilots and get two aircraft carriers. And use them for a blue water offshore offensive force.
And instead of an army and air force introduce compulsory national gaurd service instead for defensive force within our boarders.
Have RAN oporate blue water vessels. And National gaurd have heavily armed corvettes. Have a national gaurd pilots operating both helicopter and fighter jets and transport aircraft. And a national gaurd ground force.
That way people don't have to worry been deployed overseas to fight who don't want to be there. Instead they can defend the homeland.
Leave the volunteer force for RAN and if anyone who has done national service for national guard can transfer to the RAN if they willing to take on the greater role.
I believe if they did this Australia would be ready to face any threat in the future. And it will bring a working class back to Australia.

This government should immediately scrap the stage three tax cuts and use the funds that will be freed up to spend a great deal more on rapidly improving the capabilities of our defence forces. It is not beyond the ability of Australians to understand that we lack fuel reserves and don’t even have the capacity to manufacture our own munitions. This government must also ensure that it compels foreign multinationals to pay their fair share of taxes on the resources extracted from our soils.
Australia's military is far too small to achieve the task required of it as it is vastly dwarfed in terms of numbers of personnel and equipment by all of its neighbours. How can we defend ourselves when we don’t even have the capacity to manufacture our own munitions?
This is the result of decades of underfunding and neglect by our politicians who prefer to focus on quality of lifestyle type issues at the expense of fundamental matters of existence. Enabling this strategic apathy and negligence is the misguided belief that US military power is nearly unlimited and globally dominant and that it would automatically come to the defence of Australia should any of her neighbours attack her.
The US is not obligated under the ANZUS Alliance to send troops or equipment to our aid in the event of an attack upon us. They are only obligated to engage in talks with us and nothing more. We must provide for our own defence.
Our politicians need to explain to the public that rights and privileges go hand in hand with responsibilities, one of which is the defence of the nation. We need to introduce national service and link its completion by individuals to their right to access the many benefits of being a citizen of this country.
Australia is an under-armed country that needs to spend a great deal more on defence than it has in the past. We need to spend our wealth on building up our military instead of allowing foreign corporations to sell off our mineral wealth and pay nothing in tax and, in some cases, even receiving taxpayer-funded handouts. We need to spend our wealth on a nuclear weapons capability and not give it away for nothing to tax avoiding corporations.

You got volunteers who join the ADF for the wrong reasons too. Take a look at Iraq and Afghanistan conflict. We got special forces that had missions that was suposed to be a walk in the park and a week into real combat and they already got PTSD? I'd like to see them in a real war then.
Not all conscripts want to not be there. You might find 1 or 2 out of a hundred. But I'd rather serve next to someone who wants to go back home than some gun happy trigger fool volunteer that got PTSD and starts committing war crimes.
The US has conscripts they make up majority of the US marine corpes. If it can work there why not here? Some of the best soldiers are conscripts. A sturdy was done in the US that conscripts was more likely to hesitate on drastic actions due to survivability reasons and went by the book and got the job done. As where volunteers was more likely to be more gutsy trigger happy and more likely to commit war crimes. The overall study wasn't on all but was higher within the ranks with volunteers. South Korea and isreal also had the same results.
PTSD was high on conscripts during the Vietnam war not so much because of the war but dealing with a radical woke left cervilans when they got back home who abused and spat on them. People did the best to make them feel guilty unwanted and feel like a criminals. Many had taken their own life over it.
