Rodimus enters the Matrix of Leadership to discover the identity of the ones who kidnapped Kup, Spike, and Ultra Magnus. Meanwhile, Cyclonus and Scourge retrieve their fallen leader, Galvatron to make matters worse. But when the Autobots come to the rescue of their kidnapped friends, the Quintessons decide to blow up their home planet of Quintessa to try to prevent their enemies from escaping.

Grimlock used to be able to take on 5-10 deceptions by himself when first created. Now he can't take out a few starving ones.
That was lame i was s thatching my head in 86 I mean Optimus by himself took out the con squad in the movie and then gave Megatron a beat down it cost him dearly though but still
If this was S1/S2 Grimlock he would've eradicated the weak Decepticons. S3 storyline blueprint makes the Dinobots into comic relief characters and not the original simple minded powerhouse they were.

@@Q80Warlock Exactly, the Dinobots were powerhouses who didn't like taking orders, and were the ones the Autobots called when things got really bad. Unfortunately by the second half of Season 2 they were phased out for Omega Supreme and the Aerialbots, and then Season 3 turned them into bumbling idiots. The movie was the last time they got to be awesome.
Grimlock is pure gold . I mean showing affection for arcee , laughing in the most funny way and jumping and saying Geronimo 😂

The Quintessons had very sinister creepy voices, voices that matched each face and their personalities. Awesome villains.
And yet, they had zero fighting ability and were absolute and helpless cowards without something to hide behind.

Imagine if Springer had been handed the Matrix. We would have been subjected to an entire season of "I can't hope to live up to Rodimus, who couldn't hope to live up to Optimus" speeches.
He's inexperienced and they kept this whole message through the whole thing. Perhaps the writers wanted to send a message to teenagers to "grow up and stop being immature?" I felt like that was this show lecturing rebelious kids. They must have been dads who were tired of raising them. lol
Rodimus sucked. As a 10yr old in 87, we all hated Rodimus and Galvatron. Springer was one of my favorite characters from this season by far. The best though were Old Snake and Starscream’s ghost.

@@NYCQuint rodimus was literally the most effective leader in the show and best written character. Unlike optimus, rodimus ends the war and maintains his victory for a while, and even then he doesn’t sit on his ass. He goes further by negotiating with other planets for treaties in order to prevent another civil war, he’s the only leader to actually try to prevent a war through peace talks and not the end of a rifle. When optimus returned as leader, all he did was lose cybertron…somehow. He was given a huge lead…and squandered it. It’d telling when optimus entire legacy, was to die and allow rodimus to lead…because he makes good decisions
@@williamnguyen8663 when you realize the only reason the autobots could end the war is because the decepticons were either dead or fleeing from Unicron because shockwave is dead his death seen was just cut from the movie, so that's basically all of the decepticon leadership dead or fleeing for their lives so when rodimus opened the matrix and killed Unicron guess who was their to stop Rodimus from taking over no one. The reason Cybertron was lost when Optimus took over was now there is opposition to the autobots. The reason Rodimus was able to hold Cybertron is because there was little to no decepticon opposition due to their low power.

Galvatron certainly could have been written better in this show. And his voice could have been better too. No offense to Frank Welker, but I feel Leonard Nimoy was the better voice for him. I get that Nimoy had other priorities in life. But the least Welker could have done was make Galvatron sound more imposing instead of making him whiny.

I find it absolutely hilarious that the Aerialbots were riding around inside Fireflight. At least with characters like Astrotrain, Skylynx, and Omega Supreme it makes sense because they transform into Space vehicles, but Fireflight transforms into a fricking jet. I love how in one of the shots he looks as big as a rocket 😂😂😂
And where is Slingshot? Didn’t Silverbolt instructed him to pull Rodimus and the others out but Silverbolt is providing transport

This is the season where Galvatron acts like a madman trying to destroy autobots...because his brain was destroyed in the plasma bath, he thinks nothing but destruction but without strategy how to. I love this series...🙂
Megatron was a LOT better. Even Astrostrain admits it. But it's realistic for the decepticons to feel like underdogs after the events of the movie. They were so close to winning and they lost just because a shiny object was opened. There is no real strategy for autobots getting that win - it was just luck that Rodimus grabbed the Matrix and automatically won the fight. So for decepticons it must feel like you can't really plan against anything after such a loss. (this is THEIR "darkest hour" now :-P) I like how the shortage of energon forces them to become more careful of which battles to fight. It is a reminder that their losses have consequences and the result is less firepower. Contrast that to the beginning of the war Megatron had loads of energon and they were stockpiling the stuff to send off to Cybertron to feed their war machine.
Galvatron didn't kill no autobots he killed starscream that's it

until a later episode where he regains SOME resemblance of sanity.
@@UToobUsername01 The giant lovecraftian robot that attacked Cybertron at the end of the movie was probably what broke the Decepticons. They took the brunt of Unicron's attack before a handful of Autobots showed up to help.

Seeing the Decepticons at a weakened state was a wasted opportunity. Imagine if Rodimus offered energon to them but they have to stop being Decepticons. I think it would be interesting to see which Decepticons take or refuse the offer.

It takes only being pistol whipped for Rodimus to bow out. No wonder he feels inferior.
This story also shows that CYCLONUS should have taken over. He is the one that rallied the remnants of the Decepticons and got them to consolidate and donate their energon so they could get Galvatron. However had Cylonus not been so mindlessly loyal to Galvatron he would have realized that he should have just taken over.
Also Cylonus and Scourge are not blind but they are mindlessly loyal when after they rescue Galvatron they can clearly see that Galvatron's circuits are fried. They should have combined their firepower and destroyed Galvatron or else lure him into a black hole or something and be rid of him.
Scourge showed some signs of rebellion guess he was being silent and taking notes from galvs and cyclonus

Well we did see a far more sane Galvatron by the end of Web World and the remainder of S3.
I wonder though; did Galvatron's crash landing on that planet alter his voice as well as damage his brain? I know he was voiced by Leonard Nimoy in the movie and by Frank Welker in season 3. But Nimoy provided a more sinister and imposing voice for the character.
It’s possible his vocal thing was damaged too, or an effect of Unicron no longer having power over him.
@@APlatypus Well, there is one benefit to all of this; with Unicron dead, Galvatron is free to do what he wants without restrictions. Heck, I was expecting Galvatron to be like "Unicron is dead?! YES! I'M FREE! I'M FREE!"

I had a Mandela effect memory where when Galvatron threw Cyclonus into the plasma and shot a random rock in the plasma, I remembered that it was the second Cyclonus that disappeared from the Transformers Movie. In my false memory I remembered that Galvatron threw the second Cyclonus into the plasma and destroyed him with his fusion cannon so now there’s only one Cyclonus.

There's quite a bit going on including Optimus Prime's strange voice at the end of season 3 sorry if you hadn't heard it before and the a in transformers and also I can swear blind when wearing headphones the season to opener says more than meets the eyes so it might have been real at some point. PS listen with headphones and please correct me if I'm wrong but it totally sounds like the lion version of the theme now says Autobots wage their battle to destroy the evil forces of, the decepticon. Also when you're caught within the grip of the evil unicon clear as a bell now. last but not least an animation error that I was definitely not aware of we're Optimus prime was all blue. Blue prime stayed with me because it's so out of place.

Why the hate for rodimus? I remember watching the movie and season 3 on vhs 20 years ago. Now i search for it on you tueb and found out that a major part of fans dont like rodimus. Although optmus was everyone favorite but rodimus was not that bad, actually he was a good character writers probably want to show his growth , as I am sure optimus has to got through that phase as well.
Children don't handle change well. Even though I love Optimus, Im glad they shook up the status quo with the movie. While the animation is bad for 1/2 of Season 3 and S4, the stories and characters were more compelling.
Because Hot Rod made Optimus get shot and die off because of him that's why.
1. The name Rodimus is stupid
2. The Circumstances on how he became Prime and how Optimus was killed
3. The love of Optimus Prime by the fans.
The plasma bath is good reasoning why Galvatron has a new voice...i.e. Frank Welker has taken over the role from Leonard Nimoy.

Cyclonus is one of the best villains in the history of Transformers. I like Galvatron but his insane shenanigans feel too comedic for my tastes sometimes.

Why they got AKOM to do these episodes has always confused me. Surely you would want your season premier story to you know... look nice?
I understand how to many the Dinobots being more of a comic relief is a letdown from them being so badass, but I must say that I prefer the lovable goofball nature of them here. It’s more like they now feel calmed down from any alienation and rage they once felt, being on Cybertron, a place they truly feel at home, not alone, not threatened, safe and as such express their kinder, loving nature. And it makes the dramatic moment of Grimlock, a character we were used to seeing a pretty apathetic, pretty sad.
It’s hard to admit and being a grown man, but that scene of a favorite character crying makes me tear up a bit. I know it’s silly because this is just some passing cartoon that’s almost 40 years old, but in an age where more and more things become sterile, alienated, where there is less to love, where there is so much hate and discontent, to experience a scene of a beloved character crying hurts, because we don’t want to see those we love be sad.
It just happens that at this older age, after a life of pain, and in this world of ego I guess the need for happiness and wanting to see things you love be happy too is projected even on these mere cartoons that meant so much when we were kids.
Stupid tangent I know, but I guess what I’m saying is, had Grimlock still been the tough brute he was he’d not react this way. It wouldn’t hurt, but it wouldn’t also be human and reminding us to love a bit more, which is why I like their evolved state.

The Decepticons are completely depeleted of energy yet they were being shot point blank by Rodimus and it did no damage. Gotta love the animation errors and inconsistencies of G1 Transformers. 😅
Yes, extremely poor writing. Remember not long ago story wise in The 86 Transformer Movie, many powerful & high ranking Autobots were KILLED one shot by Starscream. What a joke.

I'd like to think the size/matter manipulation of the Aerialbots was tested to the limit in this episode! After this, they had to recharge their growth transformations in order to recover!
The Sweep who pulled Galvatron from the ooze must have been Skywarp in his previous life, as Skywarp had Megatron revived in the pilot.

What im still trying to figure out is why the matrix showed Rodimus all of those creepy images just to tell him about the Quintessons instead of just telling him with words from one of the past primes

The plot hole in the beginning of this still blows my mind. Rodimus Prime is stronger then Optimus as he easily handled Galvatron in the movie and subsequent battles. Grimlock is at least as tough as Optimus. Energy starved Decepticons whose weapons wouldn't work should have been no problem for them to defeat in battle. Also Cyclonus makes a better leader then Galvatron. But his mindless loyalty prevented it.

I love season 3 (I love season 1&2 also but season 3 vibes with me on a space opera level)!
I have the original cartoon on DVD but that is in a closet below a pile of stuff and there are a few boxes in front of the closet so HASBRO PULSE IT IS! I'll definatly watch the five episodes of Five Faces of Darkness today and might keep going beyond that, it's been a while since I last saw my mates Roddy, Magnus, Arcee and the rest of the guys.

If it wasn't for the power of "80s cartoon magic", that Quintesson would have dragged Spike across the floor like a bull would to a matador!

If the Quinteson was walking, I'd agree, but those hover lasers are weak and they can't move very fast, and they are just for levitation, to holding him still is like holding a bunch of balloons in place on their strings.
@@isaned I still call bullshit on that. I mean that is a ROBOT! Not a freaking balloon! If anything, the Quintesson would pull Spike and drag him around the place like a ragdoll! Spike would have to have superhuman strength to hold that Quintesson in place. And that gun wouldn't be able to fit in his hand because its got to be 20 times the size of a normal gun!

Ive always tried to decipher the matrix scene. Like...
Long ago in a world of vast technology, experiments were done, and life was created like Optimus, Rodimus, and those long ago (Sentinal?), transformers race started with IT. (Google that if you dont know) There was a struggle and the masters waged war against the creations. The quintessons are behind it all.
I'm missing parts, it's just fun to re-watch and decide :-)
