The Backrooms: 1998 is a first-person found footage psychological horror survival game where it tells the story of a young teen after accidentally falling into the depths of The Backrooms in 1998. Roam freely, mark, explore and try unravel the story - however you are not alone. Don't scream.
I'm a VFX Artist that wanted to create my take on the backrooms and focus on levels and aspects aside from the simple roaming around level 0 after just no clipping. This takes place after being stuck in the Backrooms for years, and 'the way out' is discovered.

This was really damned good! In one 7 minute video, you captured the essence of the Backrooms perfectly: The loneliness.....the danger.....the mind-numbing madness....the relief of getting out....and the brutal realization of what that all meant. All with very little spoken dialogue. This, my friend, is art and I cannot say enough great things about it.

I like that idea of looking out the window an seeing the other level... an also the time travel exit, they should do that more in these backrooms lore... like just because you escaped doesn't mean you found the right exit home... the backrooms exist in between... this is a great video
Well it's also said that nobody has escaped the backrooms, which is definitely false. Because the backrooms exist outside of reality, the time in every level varies. You could spend what feels like a month in a level, but ends up actually being multiple months. Or the opposite. And the backrooms as a whole probably goes at a vastly slower speed than irl, cause it takes a while to actually die of starvation/dehydration

Out of all the backroom VHS tapes, this one is really damn good. But it would be pretty creepy to escape only to find yourself alone.

I like the fact that when the guy escaped the backrooms he travled 66 years into the future it was 2001 when he was in the backrooms but when he escaped it was 2067 and the reason why the guy was lonly was because he travled in a time where the world got destroyed and all of humanity is dead and hes the last remaining human alive which is kinda a sad ending
It makes further sense that he was alone and the world is destroyed since almost every human (or all) were no-clipped into the backrooms
I would be horrified to be on my own with someone/something chasing me and I’m running my heart out I’d die props to the camera for filming this tho.

The atmospheric detail in this is so perfect. I haven't seen any other Backrooms video use these kinds of visual effects. I also like the unique choice of locations, starting with some kind of empty arcade looking-place, then an empty Japanese school. Haven't seen anyone else do those, most of the time they just pick the storage backroom that the OG Backrooms photo depicts.

Coming out of the back rooms in the right place, but at the wrong time? Brutal. Then again, we don't know how brutal the previous 40 some years were.

Loved the chase, loved the scenery, loved the entity, loved the little detail on the wanderer putting down his recorder to go through his equipment and above all I LOVED the fact this dude travelled in time, from two-thousand and one to TWO-THOUSAND AND FVCKING SIXTY SEVEN

I really love how you have the time stamp there and how it transfer you 66 years ahead of time in just a few seconds. Crazy to think that as far as we know, in our own galaxy things like this can theoretically happen with black holes so there surely are some actual physics with this whole backrooms concept that you visualized for us perfectly! Good stuff.
The ending got me! Of course, it all makes sense that time makes no sense in the Backrooms! Who knows in what epoch you will enter when no-clipping out of there and back to the earth?! Or any other world or universe, for that matter. This is very intriguing but bleak end for our Backrooms victim in this instance. Great job on this video.
This deserves so much recognition
The best backroom vids have very real sloppy camera handhelds that really strain the audience into trying to get a full glimpse of the room for danger but never can. That's an incredible type of suspense, great work.
The way the light fixtures buzzing actually changes and grows louder/ softer is so real. You are a master of sound design . Looking and over analyzing everything, i can see how much effort went into every single little aspect of this. I can't even imagine how one person can have this much artistry. It literally feels like real found footage

Did you guys notice how the date was March 21st 2001 when he was in the backrooms, but when he left, the date skipped forward 66 years, and a few months.
One of the best VHS tapes of the backrooms I've seen, Loved the atmosphere, the floors were a bit distracting with how shiny they were but that's only a nitpick. Love the content!

"What we're seeing" with this flood of 90's and 00's backrooms videos isn't our reality, but a parallel one.
A DEAD parallel.
People don't realize how rare cameras were back in the day when these videos were made. You had to own or rent a camera - and they were expensive, AND (most notably) you had to carry it around in addition to your (then bulky and mostly useless) cell phone.
Because if it was still going on today in our world, there would be an even larger flood of cameraphone videos, not grainy VHS.
"What we're seeing" is the early days of an apocalypse - a world that never "made it" to the era of cameraphones.
So the thing is like this

It’s really creepy, you never can truly know if you really did make it out if you do escape
Since it's been so long, I might as well explain the story behind it. Simply, the idea was that once I fell out of the Backrooms I was spat back out in an alternate reality of the far future, where it appears, humans have gone missing to unknown reasons, maybe they left the planet abandoned. Regardless, not only does it leave the protagonist in an isolated world, no different from the Backrooms but the concept that it's not even their own reality or year is almost heartbreaking when you consider that the family and loved ones are out there somewhere in another. Hence all the effort and rare chances of escape becomes meaningless, you may escape the Backrooms, but you still won't be able to return home to the world you originally left behind.

I think the tension, the floors, monster screams and the overall ambience are far scarier than the monsters themselves, in a good way. One suggestion tho: Make it so the protagonist feels more scared. It's almost like he's done this 100 times before
I think our protagonist was in the Backrooms for a long time.

The flashing light along with the white light is the portal energy channel that has opened up giving her the chance to escape from her confinement in the alternative world of the backroom. That’s how I’d like to think of it.

What happened was time flow is different compared to our reality time flow but since he took a few min to escape, it also means a few decades have passed but during that time earth must have went through a mass extinction event on us humans but since he missed the event and skip over it because he was in place that didn’t have anything to do with our reality he became unaffected by the tragedy and what’s worse he feared on being forgotten but ended being in a time where earth forgot everyone else but him

When he noclips back to reality (i think) it says that the year is 2067. I can only imagine what happened for those 45 years. My theory is that he didn't really noclip back to reality he nocliped or fell into a another level in the backrooms that is a replica of our world, yeah there might be foxes and animals there but who knows?
No, the way out takes you to reality. The backrooms doesn’t follow the laws of the real world, so 30 years could’ve passed in what felt like 3 days. I think everyone in the world except him are still in the backrooms

This guy is really lucky because when you enter the exit there is a bigger chance of teleporting to skydive hight. So teleporting really low is like 3% chance of that happening
