You need to make more videos on such complex theories. All i can say is that this is by far the best video ever on semiotics.I was able to understand everything you taught so easily. Thank u so so so much
I didn't expect the video to get such a large following but I'm working on getting the same video up with no music. My apologies! If it helps, you can turn on the subtitles and mute the video :)
Can I just say that I have been staring a textbook for ages now with semiotics going completely over my head - this video has helped me so much to grasp the main idea of what it is! Thank you!
Hey i am a graphic design student and i am having my exams tom for the semiotics and i have no idea about what semiotics is, i really appreciate your video its really amazing i am almost 70-85% clear about the semiotics in one look thank you.
I have watched many videos on yt and none of them was that great as yours! Great job, now I am able to recognize and surely implement this in my BA Thesis. The examples to each category were the shot that fulfilled the sufficient explanatory. Thank you.
This is the best and most clear semiotics explanation I've ever watched lol. But really tho, thanks a lot, Loren! It helps me so much with my uni assignment.
Thank you I learn a lot from this video because it was clearly expressed.Good thing that I still able to manage to focus on the content rather than the baclground music that needs to level down a little more.Anyway I was confuse as well about the house symbol that I thought was an icon.Anyway your video is great.Watching this content that was 3 years ago uploaded, still such a great help 🤗
Seems there are people who want you to make more instructional videos on complicated topics like semiotics. Please consider doing it! Your video made signifiers and signified much clearer than my professor's 2 minute crash course in semiotics.
Are you sure the picture of the house is not an icon? I always thought that the relation between a symbol and what it symbolizes is based on mere convention (e. g. traffic lights). The drawing of the house physically resembles an actual house as well as the drawing of a bike that you claim to be an icon. Can anyone explain this to me, please? I’m confused.
Just want to share, from what i learn in school, it is a symbol, i too, was confused at first, but then my teacher explained that an icon is like a clone, it really resembles the real thing perfectly, The house picture is a symbol because not all houses in real life look exactly the same like the pics so it is not an icon. I mean houses these days have different kind of build, for example, modern house, wood house, apartment. Not all houses look exactly the same as the pic she showed us. Why is the bicycle one an icon? Well the normal bicycle we all know in real life have the same look (the build) as the picture, that's why it is an icon Well if I'm wrong then correct me and sorry for the poor grammar, english is not my mother language and I'm trying my best to explain these.
hmm i don’t agree with the sign of a house categorized to a “symbol” because the sign is resemblance to a real house. I think it is close to icon or index.
Came here from Deepak Chopra and Donald Hoffman: Reality Is Eye Candy. (37.40). Never heard of Semiotics before. BTW I think the music helped me concentrate. Thank you.
Great video! I have a question regarding the house "symbol" before the bike icon. Why is the house not also an icon when it clearly represents a basic image of a home. It seems to represent the signifier as close as the bike image does, no?
Universally, bikes look about the same. Homes, however, can look very different depending on context. Though the house shown here looks like a very typical, picturesque version of a home, a house could be an apartment, a mansion, a tent, a yurt, etc. Hope this helps!
I liked the music overlay. Have watched multiple semiosis clips and this one was the most concise, easy to understand, and very digestible with good excersises integrated throughout. Thank you.
Thank you so much! The practice on identifying instances of the various concepts was really helpful practice for me and I found it really gave me an understanding of each concept in a useful for me way! Thanks!
Hi Loren, Would it be possible to get in touch with you regarding this video? I'm doing my University Thesis based on semiotics and branding. Would be great to get a little insight from you.
The distinctions between icons and symbols are nonsensical. A stylized mustache is an icon, although it doesn’t look like every mustache. Yet a stylized outline of a house is a symbol BECAUSE it doesn’t look like every house. The distinctions made are arbitrary. Why is a picture of a flag automatically a symbol of a country rather than an icon that represents flags? Apparently symbols and icons are whatever you choose them to be. As another example, the stylized man and woman on bathroom doors aren’t symbols of humans, they are symbols for bathrooms. They are also icons for man and woman. The difference is that symbols are learned; icons are directly representational. Icons require only that the viewer be familiar with the corresponding real world object, such as a flag. If I see a flag that I am not familiar with, it cannot be a symbol for me, yet it can be an icon. If I see an image of, for example, an 18th century cobblers bench, and I have never seen such a thing before, it is neither an icon nor a symbol for me.
You need to make more videos on such complex theories. All i can say is that this is by far the best video ever on semiotics.I was able to understand everything you taught so easily. Thank u so so so much
it is!
I agree. I could have really used this before my midterm exam yesterday.
The background music is distracting. Harder to concentrate on what's being said. Had to give up in the end.
I didn't expect the video to get such a large following but I'm working on getting the same video up with no music. My apologies!
If it helps, you can turn on the subtitles and mute the video :)
music is a icon, symbol or index? can i say is a index? regarding to the house, the answer is symbol. can i say it is also represent an icon?
I just started dancing which signifies awesome
The best video on semiotics for beginners I ever seen.
Can I just say that I have been staring a textbook for ages now with semiotics going completely over my head - this video has helped me so much to grasp the main idea of what it is! Thank you!
OmgeeI thought I was the only one struggling since English is not my mother tongue.

Such a simplified version of semiology was so easy to understand. Keep the good work on.
Best semiotic Vid I've watched so far ... Thank you for the lesson ... awesome work :)
I'm so happy you found it useful! Thank you :)
Totally agree! Great video.
This should have more views, by far the best and easiest to understand video about semiotics.
I have watched many videos on yt and none of them was that great as yours! Great job, now I am able to recognize and surely implement this in my BA Thesis. The examples to each category were the shot that fulfilled the sufficient explanatory. Thank you.

But really tho, thanks a lot, Loren! It helps me so much with my uni assignment.
Wow, amongst all the "semiotics" videos I watched so far, this is the best! Simple and clear message! Thanks so much.

I have an exam tomorrow and chanced upon this.. Thankyou!
Thank you! Hopefully, you make videos on semiotics. You did simplified these complex theories. 👏🏼
What the hell this is the most informative and educative video I have watched in 2023
Now is this a connotation or a denotation?
Seems there are people who want you to make more instructional videos on complicated topics like semiotics. Please consider doing it! Your video made signifiers and signified much clearer than my professor's 2 minute crash course in semiotics.
It is a great video but going so fast without a pause. I needed to watch it again and again. So helpful, thank you.
The best teaching ever. Super duper one.

same thoughts! i was confused at these parts too.
I was also confused in this part
I agree. The house is clearly an icon. This is a good video besides this one mistaken example.

@@sollucien ok but we have fixie etc etc so can't the bicycle sign changes into symbol and not an icon?
Great video! Helped break down the assigned long readings for media studies class
After watching heaps of videos and getting help, this video honestly made me understand more on signified and signifier. Thanks :)
loved the way you teach using the illustrations.
hmm i don’t agree with the sign of a house categorized to a “symbol” because the sign is resemblance to a real house. I think it is close to icon or index.

A house can have more than 1 window, a wider shape or tall shape whilst all bikes have 2 wheels, and a visible structure
But the mustache is an icon while it can also look like different kinds ? @@profhanna
This was SO helpful! Thanks, Loren!!
Thanks lord your voice so melodious, extraordinary lecture.
i swear, you are the best! How can i say Thank you, Hanna ? the video is so helpful 😇
you must keep doing videos. Great voice and presentation.
I liked the music overlay. Have watched multiple semiosis clips and this one was the most concise, easy to understand, and very digestible with good excersises integrated throughout. Thank you.
this was veryy helpful..best video so far about simiotics
love the way u presented the information
Why u don't doing more videos like that actually u r fabulous when u convey the information to us
Best explanation. Great Video.
Thank you so much! The practice on identifying instances of the various concepts was really helpful practice for me and I found it really gave me an understanding of each concept in a useful for me way! Thanks!
Very rewarding a lesson
Informative 👍🏼
Perfect video to explain semiotics! Thank you!
Best video I've ever watched
Well explained and to the point!
This is great lesson. Thank you! Can you please also make video lessons about pragmatics and stylistics?
You are amazing
Thank you for your effort ,
but the background music is noisy ; I coudn't focus . Thank you .
Very clear. Thank you!!
Best video on Semiotics! Thanks uploaded!
Thank you very helpful. Was struggling
Such a good video! Incredibly helpful!
So happy it could help!
Good job
thank you
Love this but the music makes it quite hard to focus on…
What is an instance where this would be needed? (Besides connotation/denotation)
This was really helpful thanks for making this!
Excellent video, well explained
Thank you so much for this video, it's really helpful and easy to understand!
that's a f*cking nice video! crystal clear explanation.
What's with ppl complaining about the music. It's not that distracting to me
The only video that helped in 2019 subscribed becoz u own it
Thank you 🙏
Thank you so much ma'am, it's a wonderful video.
Great video!! But consider taking the music out. It was distracting :/
Thanks a mill Loren
glad to see that the toilet sign still means men and ladies
Best Semiotics video! THanks needed it
Great video. It is very helpful

Amazing video
Signified is not an interpretant, signified is the object!
Symbols are my fav (i like mythological ones)
love it!!
Please lower the bavkground music
Thank you very much for this!
Very well explained 👌👌
Thnx a million for the video!
I'm so glad you found it useful :)
Hi!
Why is the signifier 'home' a symbol??? Isn't it an icon? The resemblance is obvious...as in the example of bicycle ..
Thanks ;)
Sometimes home is an apartment building. Sometimes home is a trailer. Sometimes home is a mansion :)
@@profhanna Thanks! ;-)
Thank you very much for the video however, I find that the background music is quite annoying and it is louder than your voice... :'(
very helpful! thank you for making this video
If I could give you more than one like, I definitely would
Good job for easy explaning semiotics! ❤
very easy to understand thx
Thanks!!!!!!
an index could also be called a piece of evidence.
NO, Thank You for making it understandable :)
Nice video! 💐 😍 Btw, I would like to ask any semiotics book/reference material that u can suggest? Hoping for a response. 😁
Yeah that vocal fryyyyy and cheesy background music was way too annoying to listen to so I turned it off after about 2 minutes.
Omg thanks it helped me with my uni assignments
Good video but the music really didn't help me to focus I can't continue watching.
Less fry wouldn't go amiss either.
Well structured lesson, but music is too loud and distracting. With no music or not so loud it would be just perfect.
omit the sound effects please

Ttank you for video. But music is very noisy
genius
you should try guided meditations with that voice!
Hilarious because hearing my own voice makes me cringe.
@@profhanna this is so disturbing though your efforts are good but the sound effect ruined it
I am from India, doing good you are.
Your presentation is amazing you must male more videos love from india
Symbols *are* signs. See Peirce.
Very interesting but for the annoying and interrupting music at the not so far away background. Switch that off please!
How can I text you I really need you please answer Hanna
At what point does a stylized icon become a symbol?
