I’m a long standing Spectator subscriber, but there is a certain type of middle class Scot, of which I am one, which nevertheless votes to shoot themselves in the foot. This is perfectly exemplified by Spectator editor Fraser Nelson who, whilst he still lived in Scotland has since admitted he voted yes in both parts of the 1997 referendum which led to devolution. He along with a number of others of his ilk very conveniently now lives/works in London, so does not have to live with the consequences of their perhaps idealistic 1997 choices, in fact their inexcusably irresponsible votes, before scarpering off to London. Although I now live in Scotland I spent much of my career either in London but also in fact the vast bulk of it in various countries around the world, I voted no to both parts of that same referendum - because I could see where the seemingly carefully rigged d’Hondt system could lead, it being so blatantly rigged by its Labour instigators then dominant in Scotland, to try and ensure they retained their decades-long majority in Scotland - their (Blair, Brown, Dewar and several others) cocky arrogance has led directly to the situation we now face, the only minor consolation is that their ruse has led directly to Labour’s electoral annihilation in much of Scotland - but we are still left with the disastrous consequences of their constitutional vandalism - and I have not so far mentioned the vandalism they legislated for in the House of Lords. The last two years of the pandemic have certainly highlighted the flaws and divisiveness that Devolution, malignly allowed the SNP when they took power 13/14 years ago
Thoughtful comments there Sir. I do think devolution in so called first world has and it was a theme and trend which I think was unavoidable-albeit that’s a broad and vague thing to say. I doubt I’m wrong I’m saying the 3-4 way squeeze from Covid she’s have intensified even more with a more New Zealand Ossie outlook if we were independent.
As you say, Labour wanted to stitch things up for themselves in perpetuity, but the parliament and the "government" have provided a platform for the SNP to distance Scotland from the rest of the Union and to prepare the complete infrastructure for an "independent" Scotland. Everything is in place for a (dys-)functional successor state. Although he was clever, I think Donald Dewar was too benign a character to foresee the single-mindedness, hatred and pettiness of the SNP.
@@routeman680 The 12 years of Tory rule then the current regime in Westminster have turned nuanced differences between the 2 countries into a still widening chasm. How can you watch this and seriously tell me that the SNP under the first past the post system if it was introduced in the devolved elections the SNP would have a land slide majority as they do in the Westminster Parliament. Proportional representation leads to very weak leadership, it has been seen to do this all over the world and scotland is another example though they have silenced other parties by paying a fortune to influencers! Than they bring in some idiot unelected greens! Now in particular strong leaders are needed.

You're stuck with an electorate who don't vote on policy or accountability-its stuck in the 70's unions vs private sector, Thatcher is bad type nonsense...much like the Democrats hold over the black community. Old arguments, that are emotionally charged and misrepresented, are held over people who are branded traitors for seeking their own facts. Ironically, communities across Northern England had been treated exactly like the black communities. Ignore how little they do for you, ignore how badly their policies actually affect you-you're a traitor for not voting Labour no matter how they behave, what they say and how little they do. In UK, the intersectional BE is what finally prompted a change. Telling those communities that had been ignored for 30 years+ that they were privileged AND the neighbouring wards, that had had a succession of multi million spending plans implemented, we're still the victims, was the breaking point. On top of that, many of these towns, who had ALWAYS voted Labour no matter how little had been done to arrest the decline, had been shouting for decades about the rape gangs that acted with impunity but had been ignored....This was finally exposed and a parliamentary investigation taken into a specific town which highlighted how decades of police inaction, due to fear of being branded racist, had allowed councils, social workers and pllice to ignore THOUSANDS of victims. These were councils that often knew of the abuse and had people facilitate in either the abuse or the cover up. Either way it was exposed in Rotherham then the floodgates opened and towns from northern England down to Telford and Southern England spoke of their identical problems.....5 years later, nothing had changed, police still paralysed by 'racism' and reports are finally aired by frustrated whistle blowers that shows Police are still not acting and councils are hopelessly compromised (how can a 'community leader' and a Councillor be allowed to pick the policing levels and even WHO should be allowed to 'police' the local Muslim community?). So the chain was broken. Immigration had driven down working class wages, created more pressure on local housing and driven down school levels and placements. Brexit was shunned by Labour and the media and people finally realised that the mecoa DIDN'T reflect the ciews of majority but pushed the far left, intersectional, woke, no borders pro immigration BS thats been destroying working class communities for decades. Frustration with the overly politicised entertainment and drama is reflected by the BBC popularity at record lows (whilst it still pushes divestity quotas, equity and trans hysteria and representation). The upshot is finally working class people can vote for what's best for them and not be brow beaten by old Thatcher was evil, traitor rhetoric that didn't even reflect the reality of 79's and 80's. Equally Teumpmproved manufacturing ISNT dead in US, cars can be built there if tariffs are put on Ford/GM etc cars that are built I Mexico. So too the myth that illegal immigration and illegal workers doesn't depress wages. Trump blew apart a lot of things snd he hysteria matched the Brexit hysteria. Even now, the idiotic, sky is falling arguments by remainers are clung to by ideologues.... Much like Bidens catastrophic foreign policy . It ruined Afghanistan (whilst throwing NATO Allies, particularly UK under the bus) and his day 1 decision to stop Russian sanctions, allow the gas and oil pipelines to Germany and to forget his demand Germany pay NATO intead of billions to Putin made Ukraine invasion inevitable. Yet STILL idiots blame Trump? Watch NK lauch missiles again, China hold exercises around Taiwan yet its STILL Trumps fault? It's very sad. The insurrection insanity is equally ridiculous but somehow Biden, a 81mil votes President is nothing to do with postal voting shenanigans, epic ballot harvesting or whatever NO.
Ignore what Dems said in 2016, their 'we wuz robbed' rhetoric, ignore the obvious and appalling corruption of VO Biden and his son...no Orange Man Bad. Brilliant Neil Oliver once again nailed it 👏👏👏👍👍👍👍👍👍
Well spoken Neil
She`s only a glorified counciler with to much power! I personally don`t listen to anything she mutters.
The SNP, Are Just Jumped Up Councillors, They Are A Very Small Party,
the wee Krankie doesn't like the boaby
Biggest open secret in Scotland,I’m hearing her other half does 🤣🤣
I'd much rather have Putin than Sturgeon.
Bang on neil Scottish people good snp going nowhere sad
I voted yes in 2014 and never thought I'd change my mind from there. I was a member of the SNP for 9 years.. but no more. I think if we had credible party opposition things would be far better. We badly need that. The SNP tout independence as our way back into the EU. No thanks. 👎
I would like to stick with Scotland
They had a ref so why is gb news acting like it's even allowed or was? It happened and the answer wS NO to independence
Independence is dead in the water, and she knows it. Her narcissistic personality won’t allow her to admit it. Narcissists never admit they’re wrong and never take any blame.
There's a saying that all political careers end in failure.... I look forward to the day when Sturgeon's political career ends in failure. Horrid wee woman.
Never admitting they are wrong. are we talking about Boris or Sturgeon..?
@@yehudimcewan5167 Maybe before commenting, better to engage your brain. You’re welcome
@@jonsmum5552 you saying it is only Sturgeon that is narcissistic and doesn't take responsibility for her mistakes? Boris admitted his mistakes and took responsibility regarding breaking COVID rules...
Engage my brain before commenting? Play the ball not the man etc. What have I said that is wrong? Every political leader is a narcissistic in that aspect. Agree?
Last time I held my breathe and voted YES to leave. Watching the SNP failure on schools doesn't give me any confidence in their ability to run the country. My vote will be a definite NO. I like being Scottish and British.
And the government across the border are doing a wonderful job. Christ shake off your hate. The Tories at Westminster don't give 2 fcks about the Scots. At least the 2 proud Scots, Blair and Brown gave them their own parliament and a stepping stone to independence.
was British once but the truth hit hame
Spot on Neil now try and get the Scottish people to stop voting for SNP
The support for SNP is less than 50% of less than 66% of the electorate.
The "mandate" they assert, the instruction to hold a referendum is from at best 1/3 of "the people of Scotland"
Over 20 years and 6 elections average turnout for Holyrood elections is 55.3%
The 2014 referendum was "mandated" by less than a quarter of the electorate, turnout was 85%
The ballot was a 2 year long distraction and imposition on most Scots. Some got caught up in the razzamataz and most were keen for it to be over.
The same would be true now.
The gap may narrow the result would be the same.
Regardless... what chance of peace and prosperity for a new nation state whose foundation was "mandated" by less than half its' population?
What a load of crap you write. The EU referendum was mandated by a government with only 33% of those who voted, Boris won his huge majority with 43% of those who voted, but the SNP got 47% of those who voted. Do you not know that it is only ballot papers that count?
On May 5th. Do Scotland a favour and get rid of this dreadful so called government and in particular Krankie. Scotland deserves a great deal better than this. wish we had more people like Neil Oliver.
Totally agree with Neil
We need to get SNP out not healthy with this obsession with matters relation to all this sexual behaviour in children an transgenders
I would be most worried if I had young children now.
She is in heaven, has enough authority to ruin Scotland yet she always has luxury of blaming west minister for her failings not sure she really wants independence.
This...👆
Sturgeons power mad. Named adult for every child to come between parents and kids, sex surveys to high school kids without parental knowledge, unnecessary covid restrictions, giving turbine jobs to Korea when a Scots yard miles from the proposed site goes into liquidation, not supporting Cambo oil field but importing fracked gas.
She's lost my support.
Running the country you mean? Vote Tory next time and see how that works out for Scotland.
The number of votes given to the SNP in the last election was only 29%, the 71% all voted for 4 other Unionist parties!
Or put another way, they got 46% of a 65% turnout
@@petergordon4525 i prefer your way of looking at it, look at the vote in 2017 the tories got 17.5 million votes and labour got 16.5 million votes but in real terms with their dodgy system it was a landslide. doesn't look fair to me
@@raycroal if you mean the 2017 general election I think you need to look at your figures, it was nothing like the numbers you mention!
The SNP got the support of less than 1.3 million voters out of an electorate of over 4.2 million, which meant that a!most 3 million did not vote for them!
Look at last election results. Alexander Johnson is the best advertisement for a Free Scotland.
@@petergordon4525you should read my comment again but who did the ones who didnt vote in scotland actually vote for in your opinion
The SNP are extremely dangerous.
The SNP and Sturgeon have been disastrous for Scotland; their record across the devolved areas of responsibility - health, education, social care, transport, law and order to name a few - is atrocious, independence would be catastrophic.
Say it as it is Neil. "What a man"
Not only are the SNP small; they're small minded.
...an independent Scotland would benefit nobody, except for Putin.
Spot on Neil!!
If the majority of people in Scotland voted for just one party other than SNP then that would get them out, the people must come together as one voice, hold their nose and vote Conservative, a bit like we all did for Brexit, even though the Scottish conservatives are a shambles, its got to be better than SNP.
44% did vote for Tories thanks/ because of FPTP it is a majority in seat. In Scottish election you get aporoximatively the same % in votes and seats if it was a FPTP in Scottish election about 70-80% of the seats would go to the SNP.
Great Guy Neil he always seems to say the things I want to hear .
Ironic that the so called nationalists hate their country.Sinn Fein the same ,woke and pro EU.
Who was that woman who said "Scottish independence was once in a Generation Once in a lifetime?" 🐟🐡🦈🐠🐟🦈🐡🐠🐟???
Independence isn't the issue, every second they're in power the country will continue it's
rapid decay. Scotland is now the worst country in the UK to live and by extension western
Europe and there's so sign of that changing.
My preference would be to nullify every devolved element, they are all a total waste of money and not great for the residents of these places.
Sturgeon that’s a fantastic Scottish name 🏴🇬🇧 these people really need to take a step back and have a think🤣🤣
First Salmon, now Sturgeon. Def something fishy in Alba
It is staggering how stupid so many SNP MSPs are!
