I was bouncing at a bar on Bethal rd. In Dublin OH. Mark and Kevin used to come in and have a few drinks. This was around 2001/'02. The both of them couldn't be nicer, and actually stopped a fight, by simply standing up...lol! Mark looked at the guy and just shook his head "no" 🤣 Mark was married to a girl I went to Highschool with in Hilliard, Oh. I had the pleasure of meeting Mark on a few different occasions, and he was always friendly. So very sad that Kevin passed, way to soon. R.I.P. Mr. Randleman. God bless.

Thank you so much for answering my questions. Dan really should be recognized as the grandfather of ground and pound.
God bless Cal. What a stud to survive something like that and still worry about Don.
So sad what happened with Kevin. That time when Don met Kevin in the locker room must be around the time of the pot incident that Bas Rutten recounted with Kevin and Ryan Gracie.
Speaking about Bas, one must admit that many of the most infamous dirty fighters where his compatriots. For Dan and Don, who was the dirtiest of them all: Gerard Gordeau, Bob Schrijber or Gilbert Yvel?

Coleman really did take it to another level, for sure Dan and I'm sure others, would get therr man down, hold them and attack, but Coleman's version was full mount, postered up and throwing bombs. Also, in a pre fight interview mark said "I'm gonna ground him, and pound the shit out of him" so being that he coined the phrase, and how well he executed it ide say that's why he's given then credit. Which I agree with. But people respect that, it's super visual and frankly its awesome to see! Dan, might look like he's just laying on top of someone tryint to headbutt, or just holdint position, so ppl that don't know what's going on dont have the proper respect for Dan's technique

It always bothered me that Dan was the first pure wrestler (UFC 4) who relied on ground strikes to either soften up or outright finish opponents, yet Mark Coleman (UFC 10) got all the credit for the strategy.
Coleman's a classy guy and wouldn't plagiarize anyone but the UFC went w/their marketing of the dominant champion.
Randleman is the best athlete I've ever seen in mma. His thick, vascular thighs allowed him to clear the UFC cage by 1 leap and could sprint to the center of the cage faster than any of his opponents,

I came within 24 hours of dying from a strafe infection, which a ER Nurse Practitioner missed, and sent me home. I went to another hospital the next day, got a correct diagnosis, and was put in intensive care on a ventilator for the next 10 days with the strongest antibiotic IV they had. It turned out to be MRSA and the Infectious Disease doctor who treated me said I would have been dead within 24 hours if left untreated. I was in the hospital 4 weeks. Makes me wonder how many people needlessly die because their symptoms aren't recognized in time.

Don/Dan - slightly off topic - Are you guys aware of or do you have any experience/interaction with the BioXcellerator Clinic & Laboratory in Medellin, Columbia? I have heard and read miraculous testimonies of people (mostly athletes) that have excruciating debilitating spinal, orthopedic, and even brain injuries enjoy a level of rejuvination and renewed vitality with those problem areas. My understanding is that in the USA their are certain restrictions and limits placed on shall we say the "potency" of the stem cell treatments - where-as in Columbia there are more liberal governance of the same - i.e. it has been said that their treatments are hundreds and thousands of more times powerful in order of magnitudes. The list of those singing the praises of this place are amazing here are a few - Kevin Nash, Joe Rogan, Ryback and on and on...anyways - thx for your sacrifices and perhaps if u have any nagging injuries that just dont seem to want to respond perhaps this is something you may want to look into - Great show - great podcasts - again thx gentlemen

I watched first hand all the early UFC tournaments, so I will tell you why the Hammer was called the "Godfather" of ground and pound.
In a post tournament turtle win, he was asked his strategy to win and he said, "first I'm going to ground him, then I'm going to pound him" and so the commentators actually them always referred to Coleman's strategy as "ground and pound" and then as years passed and Mark was older than most of the fighters, the media would refer to him as the godfather of ground and pound.
Although both were exponents if G&P, Dan was a superior wrestler of the two and Coleman was the superior striker of the two. Coleman could be offensive on his feet with fist strikes whereas Severn would only stay on his feet long enough until he felt the opportunity open up to shoot or tie up. Coleman's strikes were more powerful either standing up or on the ground, but Coleman was vulnerable to high kicks, he did not block these well.
Evidence Shamrocks Lions Den fighter Pete Williams puts out Colemans lights with a brutal roundhouse kick to the face in UFC fight.

Imo, Dan seemed to win more from his wrestling. His wins his opponent seemed to already be done before he even started smashing.
Having watched it all from the beginning, my recollection is Dan was the first real wrestler to win the UFC and I felt he did it with wrestling more than anything else.
Coleman was another great wrestler, but I always saw him as the guy who won with his fists on the ground.
I never saw his wrestling to be dominant enough and I guess he didn't either.
He was the firstly to mainly win his titles from ground and pound.
